You should have told her that the "big sky little bullet" rule was in effect. But on a serious note, she should never be allow to fly again. Not after that, but that's what officers do. They cover up for each other and drive on. God forbid an officer, a FEMALE officer at that, take full responsibility like enlisted solider's (normally) do.
@KDMills709 Brother, I'm good with it! I know exactly which pilot you're talking about, it isn't the first time she did something like that. I got to chat with the crew a few weeks later, not sure if you were one of them, but there were absolutely no hard feelings, not on the enlisted side, anyway. For my end, I knew you guys waited until we were out of the GTL, and I'm glad we didn't ruin the fire mission, and no one (but the enemy) got hurt.
That was my platoon shooting that round, the bird was very lucky that day. The video serves no justice, from the gun pit it was only about 15 feet from impact.
The closest I ever got to an enemy was exchanging stares with the East German border guards.
From the bottom of my heart I want to send you guys my gratitude, my respect and my love for stepping up for your country. All of you who have gone and put your lives and your bodies and your minds and your souls on the line in front of a real enemy, well, I just want you to know that you are my fucking heroes forever.
Hey guys, I just wanted to take a moment to say thanks. I was in the 93rd Sig Bde in West Germany and the 2nd Armored Div at Fort Hood in the early 80's.
Meaning that I never got near a war zone. Although I'm not stupid enough to say "Gee, I wish I could have seen combat", sometimes it makes me feel as though I haven't really paid my dues.
I was there in March 2009 for about 45 days to help with the first installs of the Frag 7 Humvee upgrade.. we were watching those guys calibrate that same gun and they were shooting direct fire across the valley into the mountain on the other side. A few choppers came flying in from the east and they shot a round that probably missed the choppers by a few hundred feet... that was a close call but not as close as this one haha.
Talk about situational awareness...in the 90's while crewing shithooks stationed at Hunter we had went to Bragg for some field ops. While doing NVG slingloads we had set down in a clearing in the trees awaiting our next turn. I was crewing in the back and looking out the bubble window I noticed another Chinook come over the treetops and was trying to land right on top of us. Thank God for the ICS. Saved our lives that night.
@indyboom, cont. Could things have gone better? Sure, but I'm just glad we didn't get blasted out of the sky. I'm also glad my crew buried the hatchet with the gun crew afterwards. They saw we were out of their GTL, so put the shot out on what I'm assuming to be an important fire mission. After all, we were all on the same team.
@indyboom unfortunately, the mountains A-bad were built on the side of kept us from turning any other direction. We had no way of knowing if the other gun tubes were about to go hot, our IP correctly chose to get under that 155's target line.
Yeah, I was gunner on that aircraft, sorry, the confusion was not on our part. Controller didn't know the guns were hot, I saw the crew waving us off, if it was any other pilot besides our senior instructor pilot, we'd have been toast. cool2bme1, were you on that crew, or at the FARP? Me and the gun crew joked about it afterwards, but only after a thorough investigation.
@alemons210 Well I was on that holitzer at the exact moment that all happened. and the TOC told that pilot the LZ was hot and to circle the river to our south and wait until the LZ was green. Pilot showed up to throw complaints, but was told she had better get back on that bird and leave. Situational awareness!! Abad 8Feb06-28May07.
1st PLT, B Btry, 4-25 FA, 3BCT, 10th Mountain Division. We were there from Feb. '06 to May/June '07. I was deeply saddened by your loses from the major engagement in the Wygal valley to the north.

@alemons210 Actually, I was with that artillery platoon's sister platoon at Blessing. This video made its way around as you can imagine.
