  • I recently acquired the original Aoxomoxoa and it is better than the '71 remix, especially this particular song, but also Doin' That Rag and Mountains Of The Moon. I wish the Dead would put out a version of Aoxomoxoa (that's hard to type, sheesh) that has both the original mix and the newer mix, all remastered of course with the studio outtakes and other bonus material. The outtakes originally done on 8-track are available on the Live Music Archive in less than pristine sound quality.

  • puts the taste of mushrooms in my mouth, delicoussssssssssss

  • DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND THE ORIG MIX FOR DOWNLOAD ON THE INTERNET?

I JUST SEEM TO FIND BROKEN OR OLD LINKS...............Thank you.

  • I forgot to mention, but anyone who wants the original mix of the whole album, send me a PM. I've got a good copy someone transferred from the vinyl box set.

This track is proof that San Francisco wasn't just a bunch of hippies taking acid and playing soft rock. The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane knew how to play real psychedelic rock, it's just the same overplayed "hits" are usually what people hear. In fact, the only Dead stuff the radio plays is from the 70's.

  • @TheOneartist hook me up

  • Gives me goosebumps

  • I like the delay on Jerry's voice on the remastered aoxomoxoa

  • do you think they will ever release this mix in a "non-boxed-set" format?

  • @MaidenFloydTallica13 I don't think so unfortunately. I did get a CD copy someone transferred from the new vinyl box set, though. Really glad to have it without any hiss or scratches like the used and rare 1969 pressings have.

  • I have heard 3 studio versions of this song. This one (my favorite), Aoxomoxoa Outtakes and Aoxomoxa (Remastered). This is the weirdest one of the 3. I like the effect that the fan had on Garcia's voice. For more weirdness check out Late For Supper>Eep Hour>Spidergawd on Garcia's debut solo disc Garcia and Blues For Allah on the album of the same name.

  • Wow, that was really intense. Not. I didn't even get halfway.

  • @casestudyification maybe one day you'll be able to understand songs longer than 3 minutes

  • @Clanhelius Ever heard "Darbari's Extension 1" by Jon Hassell? (13 minutes and 52 secs) Or "The Heavenly Music Corporation" by Fripp and Eno? (20 minutes and 53 secs) Or "Supper's Ready" by Genesis? (22 minutes and 53 secs) Is that long enough for ya? AND I've never done drugs or needed drugs to enjoy those songs, so there, smart guy.

  • @casestudyification that's cool. No one "needs" drugs to enjoy anything, but how can you fault someone for wanting to get the most out of music? It's not like everyone ONLY listens to certain music on certain drugs. Ive never heard this song on any drugs, but I don't think it'd be good (song's a bit minimalistic / erratic)

  • @Clanhelius I don't think anybody's getting more out of music by taking drugs, I think they're shortchanging themselves of the full experience. I'm sure it's probably more exciting listening to this stuff with weird stuff happening to your head, but then again anything would. As far as this song goes, I would need to take drugs just to get through it. : )

  • One of the very rare Dead's psychedelic material ...

  • AMAZING. I like both mixes. This was incredible to experience live at Radio City! Thanks for posting :)

  • they did this one while on laughing gas.

  • Holy shit. They really drug something back from the nether regions with this one. Beautiful and natural. Perfect. Sounds like they recorded in the sea of monsters.

  • I think I like this better than the album version.

  • @Bigpolak57 It is the original album version. It says 1968, but the album actually came out in 1969. In the early 70's, they were getting into folk and country rock and wanted to down the psychedelic nature of both this album and Anthem of the Sun. That was a mistake they later realized which played down their role as psychedelic pioneers.

The thing with Aoxomoxoa, though, the master of the original mix got lost and in late 2010 they finally re-released it (vinyl only, sadly) after finding it.

  • good ol' grateful dead.

  • psychadelic rubbish

  • @villiparis First of all, learn how to spell 'psychedelic'. Second of all, this (to me) is not rubbish. It has the edge and intensity of true inspiration. I realize this is all subjective - I just felt compelled to respond. Great video!

  • @Ghoopty Agreed Ghoopty. Psychedelic rock is one of the most inspiring genres. The studio effects aren't gimmicks. They're the result of sonic exploration and experimentation. We desperately need bands like this today and not just some generic offshoots.

  • @villiparis Learn how to spell kid. This is truly amazing work. If you don't like it, or more likely don't UNDERSTAND it, then don't hate on it. Beautiful video.

  • it's okay, just take a big breath in....and exhale. in..and out...big breaths

  • Man I wish I had a record player, if I did I would go right NOW and buy the original mix of AOXOMOXOA sounds way better than on cd.

  • Wow, on listening to this original mix it's clear that this was actually the standout centre piece of the album and that its effect was largely lost on later releases than the original vinyl . This is even weirder than anything on Anthem!

  • This only sounds like Acid music to me.........it sounds like the Acid of the time. It would be perfect to listen to on Owsley.

I don't think it's scary or anything other than very, very psychedelic music........Trust me, on 350-400 mics or more you don't want anything to do with anything evil or scary unless you want to visit Hell for a few hours or risk losing it badly. This would sound very different on a high dose of pure LSD.

  • amazing....jerry had bad taste to change the lp.

  • this reminds me of a bad acid trip that comes on too quick.

    In a good way though.

    Nice effects on the colors.

    This entire album is amazing.

  • @motherbrain86

yeah, got to agree, very chilling in its original mix; the Clementine lyrics from the same era also examine similar points of reference, depending on how they were performed since they vary but generally express dystopian frame of mind

  • In some ways this will always be my favorite Grateful Dead song. Thank you for posting it. The video rules.

  • wooohoooo!!!! this is fucking ill , maybe even one of the deepest tracks off the album

  • one of the greatest dead song ever(you want a horrid one then that title would go to let me sing your blues away), ignore other mixes, jerry never sounded more doomy and this reminds of who scary altamont was

  • This is so much better than the re-mixed version!

  • @dainin123 I agree. I wished TPTB would re-release the Aoxomoxoa Remaster now that they've "found" the "origninal 1969" mix.

Grrrr, instead they have it only available on the 188 gram vinyl box set that was just released.

  • is there any chance that some of the other original aoxomoxoa mix tracks will find their way on to the youtube?

this is great btw and many thanks for the upload

  • i like the visual strobing. its like before you leave body on dmt. haha

  • hey dude, where did you get theis video foot? is it the kennedeys? if not, who are they? i saw jerry in the trees, is it just me, or do you see it too?

  • @aemtsantos where do you see jerry??

  • STRANDED!
