"I have wanted a Leica Rangefinder for a very long time. I am an experienced amateur photographer with an extensive portfolio in sports, landscape, portrait and travel photography. I have an immense collection of Canon digital and film bodies and nearly every lens Canon has produced in the past 20 years. I have been more than ..."

  • I'm happy with using my Zorki 4 for street.

  • fuck the price

  • professionals handling a 7K USD camera without a strap ... yes ...

  • Do you recommend this or a nikon d3000?

  • @CasamiaStudios I had the Leica M9 for a while but went back to a sony cybershot because there was no place where i could put stickers on.

  • why is The Leica M9 Sooooo Expensive i would rather buy that if it was like less than a $1000 but instead i Bought a Canon 60D Twin Lens IS Kit

  • It's somewhat embarrassing that a camera channel doesn't have an HD option on their videos...

  • Its only a question of WHEN not IF Nikon & Canon will follow the Fuji x100 into this 'Leica' market - there is just too much money to be made.

FANCY A DIGITAL NIKON SP - SO DO I ! If it cost £3500 it would still be a bargain compared to the M9

Fuji naturally will introduce an X200 0r X1000 with switchable lenses - should make for a most interesting 2012/2013

Let the good times roll and put an end to the endless series of minor model changes by Canon & Nikon....!

  • I am more than happy enough with my Nikon D7000. It takes phenomenal pictures. But I can understand the allure of the Leica M9. Full-frame sensor in such a small and handsomely retro body. Brings back the old days with manual operation.

But the price-tag alone limits this camera to the loaded connoisseur.

  • does this record in raw format?

  • Awesome camera but sadly it seems that it's got zero environmental protection which is something you realkly have to have when you ask this price. Maybe you will get it right next time.

  • the thing that most people dont know is that the sensor is absolutely amazing on these cameras. They are much sharper than any canon or nikon camera and are much more detailed as well. Dont get my wrong, im happy with my nikon, but after actually trying one, i dream of getting one of these some day

  • leica should make some more afordeble rangefinders

  • I'd keep my ancient 20D and buy good lenses. Definitely not worth the money IMO. Not even 1/4 of what it is.

  • This Is my perfect camera!!! Manual focus. Slap a 50m on this then I'm off.....

  • I can only dream of the day when I can afford this camera. Just out of curiosity, what type of warranty do you get on a camera that costs around 7,000 pounds?

  • Why do so many people who have no idea about photography watch these vids?!

It's nothing to do with price, I'm by no means rich but one day I will by one one to put the photography back into photography. This is everything a camera is and should be. I'd have this with one lens, than a bag full of zooms and look at me I've arrived SLRs. I could literally take this every where.

There is a reason something handmade from a company whos cameras have been responsible for some of worlds most iconic

  • Yeah....Leica.....for people that think spending $10,000 will make them better photographers. They are such posers' cameras.

  • a medicine for midlife crisis

  • Lol i am happy with my Canon 500D =P

This camera looks like a MAC version of those point and shoots.

  • im happy with my canon 7D

  • Only a fool will spend 5K on this, rather buy one nice Leica lens - maybe a 35mm f2 Summicron and get yourself an M film body.

Film you say - yes it requires you to think but you will with time become a better photographer, no more point, click, chimp instead you will be able to read light and decide before you even take the photo what the camera should be set to.

You will own a camera that you can use for the next 10 years rather one you need to trade in in 2012 for a M10.

  • sell that for less than $1000 i'll buy it. otherwise i'll stay with canon. :)

  • Wait a minute... wait a minute. Soooooo.. it's Leica outside..and KODAK inside ???? Thats a bit like the Bang & Olufsen Hi-Fi equipment. All design outside and Philips components inside. So how can they possibly justify the price? As David Bailey once famously said.. photography is all about photographs.. not about equipment. This is without doubt a fine piece of kit but unless you're making money from your photos it's not financially viable.

  • @lefeudebout It's a very good kodak sensor at that. You pay for the red dot and ability to use red dot lenses.

  • highest iso should be at least 3200 .. and that iso should still provide noise free photos due to the full frame sensor..

  • Step 1 - Get job

Step 2 - Open Savings account

Step 3 - Forget job and savings account and sell your organs on the black market and get this camera now =)

  • $7 grand... Dang.

  • nice special camera. a true classic.

    one day

    i will get one..

    i will

  • IF you go to my channel i have a really great tutorial on how to Convert footage and export footage to youtube. Canon Mark 5D II or Canon 7D!

  • I dont think Id go for this camera... even if I had the cash... I guess Id sele for a 1D and all the L lenses instead...

  • not in my budget lol

  • Comment removed

  • I want one so badly... T____T but so freaking pricey...god, please drop some money from the sky~ XDD

  • Geezz... What a price. I'll stick with my Canon 5D Mk II thanks...

  • @ryowxyz No Canon 5D Mk II is ever going to be able to replicate what the Leicas can do.

  • @foxkenji hahah 5d mkii can do all plus more then the leica

  • Why did you do this inside? So there wouldn't be glare on the screen & ambient noise.

  • @MrCoolManTim It was too dark inside and there was a press event going on so even noisier!

  • @WhatDigitalCamera When you were introducing the camera, the Leica representative looks like he is expecting you to nick it!

  • Nice camera, you forgot to say, it's only manual focus, but I bet if you're looking after a M9 you already know that, right ?

  • What!? 5000 euros!? are those at leica fucked up?

No wonder most people buy olympus pen.

  • @Echofromsomewere1 because leica is quality. not saying that other brands arent, but leica is known for legendary quality and appeals to hardcore manual photographers.

  • @Echofromsomewere1

you obviously know nothing about about photography. Thats like saying 200,000 dollars for a ferrari? Just buy a honda civic and tune it up!

  • That's one hell of a sexy camera!

  • WANT!

  • whats a rangefinder.?

im not into cameras i just wanna know so bad pleaase someone explain

  • Wish some chav would run past and... *SNATCH*!!

  • Damn it audio not in sync..pisses me off

  • @dd8721 is for me

  • They are fashion statements though. There hasn't been for years many reasons why you would want a rangefinder camera over an SLR. Not for pros anyway. They're just cool and thats it. Yeah, you can use Leica glass but thats not the only great glass out there. The 'creative freedom' argument is doesn't hold much water with me either. Its all in your head. Its not your camera, its you. I sure would like to have one though if I could afford to spend that much on gear I wouldn't use professionally.

  • @thugrain1234 why would it be better than a modern canon or nikon is what i dont get.

  • @roberthemsley2 . Neither Canon nor Nikon has offered a rangefinder camera since the 1960s. Leica grants you access to the legacy of Leica M lenses with the M9. This is the camera Leica didn't even think could be built. A full-frame CCD sensor resides in the slim 'M' series rangefinder body. The M9 weighs less, makes less noise, less invasive and obnoxious than Nikon's D3x and Canon 5D mkII DSLRs...and it's not fare to compare image results with M9 and Leica M glass.

  • I am a diehard Leica shooter, but I have to say that all this leicafetish is a bit much. Never buy a camera for it's badge (unless it's old, odd and going for less than $20 at a flea market).

As far as this thing goes, I'm sure it's a fine camera, I just can't help thinking that it will never last long enough to brass. You ask me, the only reason to look at the back of your Leica is to admire the DIN dial and all that sexy chipping vulcanite.

    M2 Forever!

  • I kept getting the feeling throughout the video that Nigel was going to lean in and kiss Brett... Leicas do strange things to people after all...

  • Best? Yes, truly so. What is the strength of Leica compared to the competition? I would say, creative freedom. The camera pushes you actually to be more than you are as a photographer, to do crazy things, to photograph events you wouldn't with any other camera because of the fun of it all. The camera feels very 'light' compared to a Canon D5, which is undoubtedly a competitor (also full frame sensor), but very bulky and heavy with a good lens.

  • Quite simply the best! There is nothing that compares to a Leica M9 today. And it's beautifully made. Yes,I'm afraid quality does come at a price.

  • Siete tutti fotografi???

    Ma vaffanculo!!!

    W LEICA M6

  • Overpriced. Back in the old film days, Leica has been king, but a Canon or Nikon SLRs with a high quality lense will do as well or even much better than a Leica M series, especially high speed sports photography. Leica M cameras are more of a fashion accessory than anything else. Yes, the lenses are excellent, but not vastly superior to Nikon or Canon's best lenses.

  • @NaVaJoPaCoTaCo I agree in some ways, Just because it's a Leica you are already paying a premium.( Personally I think it is 25% more then it should be). But as any owner of a Leica camera, you know the build is second to none, quality, simplicity is superb. Yes Nikon/Canon/Sony can match or better on image quality..but it is almost double the size add to that lenses. In design a Leica m series is like a supermodel, a Ferrari. If I could afford this camera I would buy it in a heart beat!

  • @NaVaJoPaCoTaCo "Leica M cameras are more of a fashion accessory than anything else."

Realize that when you say things like this, you let the world know that you are an ignorant boob.

  • i dont get these cameras. why do they ;look old school?

  • ive heard of pros trading in d3s and top end lenses to get a m9!! id love one for street work and travel togging! awesome bit of kit!! and sexy as hell!!!

  • @quickshooter100 First time i hear that.

  • flash sync 180 !! that blows

  • well of course, thats like comparing watermelon to apples

watermelons are way bigger but have a better taste, and apples are way smaller and dont taste as good

also, leica is for rangefinder and leica people. its a different feel to it, really not a camera that should be based on its monetary value

  • Seriously, this thing is techologically inferior to anything else on the market. Aside from the full frame sensor, it has a 2.5 inch LCD, ISO 2500 max, 2fps, 1/180th flash sync, a crappy menu structure, and no autoocus whatsoever. Why are they charging freaking $7,000 for this? Because it's handmade, meaning it's subsect to human error?

    Leica pisses me off.

  • @awsomenesscaleb Well maybe your just pissed that you cannot afford one. They wouldn't charge that much money for these cameras if they didn't think they would sell in the market. So people ARE paying this price for the M9 as hard as that is for you to comprehend. A Rolls Royce is not the most technically advanced car in the world, but it has heritage and prestige. Both companies have remained true to their roots despite robot made, mass produced chinese goods.

  • leica isn't for sports photographers tho

its probably the best street photography camera because of its size, and is a camera you dont really base on its monetary value, its something you buy because you love rangefinder and the leica name, its something only leica lovers can understand

  • from what u said i am 100% certain that u have never touched a RF, leica, not to mention this M9. there is no point for me to waste time to explain to you what's this machine is all about.

  • that thing is so sick. seems very overpriced though.

  • Only requirement to own one of these:

    Rich Photography Nerd

    PERIOD

  • or professional photographers who also love street photography

  • software in Leicas are more poor, compared to "Canikon" products. the newer Panasonic GF1 is the best alternative to a pay-a-car's-worth digital rangefinder. smaller sensor, but great performance nevertheless with the 20mm prime.

  • LEICA M9 "TALENT NOT INCLUDED"

  • To be worthy of owning one of these, you really need to be an expert on Photography first.

  • they are better then canons and nikons

  • I'm not really sure why you replied to me, and I'm don't wish to sound rude, but I hate that kind of comment.

Who cares if they are 'better' than other makes.

    Its a tool - that's all.

And in my opinion, you should be a master photographer before you contemplate getting one of these.

  • can't have said it better myself

  • Thanks for that but I'm not yet worthy of one myself !

I can see the enormous benefits of having one though for doing street photography.

I recently tried my hand at this genre and had some good results, but the first thing I noticed about my camera (a Nikon D700) was how noisy it was !

Yes, even I find it a nice experience to dream about owning a Leica, but my skills aren't up there yet.

    One day hopefully.

  • Nice. a full frame digital camera thats as compact as a classic leica... I'd love one of these but that price tag is just wrong. Half it at least lol.

  • Wait until Zeiss or Voigtlander do one.

  • @ajuk1 ... you mean Cosina. (and i agree, it could be a pretty beast and cheaper)

  • arent digital cameras have short lifespans? is the price of this camera worths its lifespans? does this becomes obsolete very quickly?

  • Very nice, but way to expensive.

  • its a waste of money.

you can get better for far less

  • Why is this so expensive?

  • cause it's the best...

  • Makes a great present for your gran, I hope she'll be happy with hers soon!

  • It doesn't have a leaf shutter per previous comment, it's a focal plane shutter.

  • perfection

  • Nicely done video, for those who would like to see an M9 in hand. Of course, I wish it were my own hands. At the end of the video, the words "available today" are spoken. I wish that were true.

    Larry

  • that 28mm summicron looks sexy on the grey M9 ~~~~~~~~~~~

  • i dont think it is too expensive as long as u are in the league of being able to own a leica M. if u want a fast wide angle lens with the M8, u will need to buy the 21 or 24mm f1.4 lens and they are like $6000 but with the M9, a $3000 35mm f1.4 is wide enough for most occassions.

  • I would buy one if I had the cash. That would be prefect for street photography because of its quiet leaf shutter. But damn $7,000 u.s! I can honestly say it should not be worth that much.... Mabye $3,000 u.s but 7 give me a break...

  • The Hermes special edition M9 will cost around £8k ($15k). Beautiful camera though.

  • when you look at A LEICA it just says EXCLUSIVITY which cant be compared .... to anything really.

  • nice moose knuckle (1.54)

  • WTF 10k Dollars!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Once you are truly worthy enough to own a Leica M it doesn't matter the cost, but of the photographic art. You focus on on the image, not the tools of the trade. The reason they price it so high is to scare the twelve year old kids away and not take their parents money. The M is a camera even some professionals are unworthy of.

  • Alright mrs. i-know-everything...

I own a Camera ok i know about photography and i know you dont have a Leica....

  • I never said I knew everything. I only speak out of common sense. What I said is true. However, I am only a beginner but as far as I know, even the dumbest monkey on earth could comprehend the fact that Leica is a not-to-fool-with brand. Leica is an emotional brand, not they camera you let your eleven year old fool around with. They build the tools for a photographer not to count pixels and seek sharpness but to make it easier to express the art than just show off foolish photos.

  • @LikeAVideo

£7200 for the 50mm f0.95 noctilux lens - costs more than the m9 body!!!!!

  • when hasselblad stepped in to the digital world their cameras evolved, leica just stepped in shit. should have sticked to film

  • Oh man... If that was me I would have had a boner on 01:53

  • What? No Live View?

  • 7000$ for this man juice??? love my 5d mk ||

  • Damn, you can buy a good brand new car for the price of that thing with a good lens

  • Didn't know you could get a lens for a car!

This camera is a bit pricey.

  • Please note that Nikon just introduced another 12 megapixel

professional body to their line. Obviously they're stupid too.

Yup, it's got video.... and wheels so it can run around and take

    photographs for you.

  • no. the nikon d3s is aimed at sports and news photographers, not fashion, glamour, advertising and landscape.

those kinds of photographers dont need the extra resolution.they need speed.

but most leica users need the extra resolution so that they can exploit the extra high resolving power of their leica lenses.

and most leica m users shoot landscapes and portraits, NOT sports.

  • Ok, I'll throw away the MkIII D body I used to make panoramas

    out in Colorado...

    You're right, they shoulda.

I owe Leica..... had to hit a Vietcong marauder over the head

with one in Saigon in '68. It still works.

  • nikon d90 has...

    12 MP

    920k lcd screen

    720p HD

    nikon = genius!!

    i'd rather spend 1200.00 USD on a NIKON D90!!!

  • @ValueMSW

    I'm guessing you've never used a leica M then?

My Leica M4-2 + Voigtlander lens cost me less than the D90. It uses film and doesn't even have a light meter, but what it does it does perfectly which is take pictures, no gimmicks.

  • how stupid they didnt make it a 24 megapixel sensor. just a lousy 18 megapixel.

Why would u get expensive leica lenses with high resolving power when you will just use an 18 megapixel sensor?

  • isn't the sensor made by canon??.....

  • i think it was made by kodak

  • It should be well made for the 7000 dolla r price tag lol

  • rollsroyce of camera..

  • Mercedes of cameras. Rolls isn't crappy british...

  • Now the true leica m has become a reality a full frame sensor digital range finder. Many will question why its only up to 2600 ISO? well the answer is you dont need high ISO like the DSLR cameras bcoz the shutter of leica m9 is so quiet and virtually no vibration, you can set the leica shutter to just 1 sec. and you still get sharp image with medium format picture quality in a compact camera body, Leica m9 achieve this bcoz of their fenomenal lenses.Amazing! and i want one.

  • flash sync speed is only 1/80??

That's too low for a expensive camera like this. Nikon cheapest SLR, the D40, has flash sync of 1/500.

  • Why would you want a faster sync speed? That makes no sense! You NEED a slower speed to properly expose the foreground and background. Using faster speed make everything but the subject black. Faster sync=subject in sea of black.

  • You need fast synch speed to use fill flash in daylight.

If you're outside in daylight, 1/80th of a second is easily too long for any wider aperture.

  • It's actually 1/180th, not 1/80th - but you're right...it is a bit slow.

But, who'd use a flash on their Leica?????

  • It's called fill flash you dumbfuck!

  • You guys really think I don't know what fill flash is? When I talk about higher speeds I was referring to using it as flash for the dark. @sinergy16 are you kidding me? You scrolled down searching for MY comments? Who's the douche with no life now? Ass hole.

  • Flash sync is 1/250 like 90% of the dslr.

  • WOW, this camera is a dream.. I wish I could afford one. Way too much going on, one day I will have one:)

  • why is finder .68x and not .72x, or indeed .85x?

  • Beautiful bit of kit. If you think about it, in a digital camera with live view, you don't really need the range finder or mirror and pentaprism. However, like with watches, the electronic calculator type watches went out of style a long time ago, because poeple got used to the way a watch was supposed to look like, and so to this day, mechanical watches are far more desirable then digital Casio. Same with cameras, I think, that why DSLR and range finders are such hot items these days

  • Somehow this contrives to tell nothing about what the camera is, or is not capable of.

Do people buy menus and buttons these days?

    Not even a single image?

  • What happened to the R series? It would be great to have a full-frame 18-megapixel back for the R9 camera....

  • i cant believe a 6 thousand camera has a 230k screen only...

  • High level products develop slowly. The case in point was the Mamiya ZD, which took so long to develop, that with it's 1.8 inch LCD screen, it looked old by the time it was released. A Leica camera is also more about the lenses and precise German mechanical parts like shutter and such. I don't think Leica fans care much about the electronic parts of the camera. In fact, personally, I think if the Leica camera had no LCD at all, it would be even more purposeful for the purits of photography

  • Wonderful and I want one!

Two problems - I can't afford one and second KODAK who have designed the sensor - expect problems as with the M8 anytime now.....

  • Thankfully I never bought into the subpar M8, what a drag for those who did...just couldnt get my head around the nonsense of a non Full frame rangefinder. This M9 has my interest peaked...would love to take one for a test drive with my M lens set. Been shooting with M3s and M6s for years and most of my lenses are from the 70's (21mm, 35mm cron (Cdn), 75mm 1.4, 90mm 2.8 Elmarit...love these older lenses ...curious to see results with them on an M9....perhaps a very nice meeting of old and new

  • how do they meet the quantity demand?

  • They make it REALLY expensive ;-)

  • i want i want iwant i WANT!!!!!!!!!

  • leica should exchange with all those who bought m8's and m8.2s

didn't leica say it was impossible to have a full frame sensor because of simple physics??

  • LEICA: Ludicrously Expensixe Image Capturing Array

  • Lucky man... What about high ISO ?

  • Perfect camera if you would ask me..

To bad I will never have it..

  • other full frame cameras are similar costs and require a HUGE body, this is a awesome peice of kit for a pro or amature enthusiast. Retro camera styling like this is back and I cant help but think the images would blow you mind with the quality.

  • This is actually the world's smallest full frame digital camera by quite some margin.

  • I think that Sigma DP series is smaller. And it has full-frame Foveon sensor.

  • its not full frame , it has a 1.7 crop factor , same as my sd14

  • Hmmm. I was seriously convinced it was full-frame. Ok. Anyway. 1.7 crop factor is not that bad too :) Sigma is a great piece of camera, but you need some time to learn how to use it. It's a bit a tricky thing.

  • haha isnt that the same camera in the "film euro" trip?

  • hehe i think that was the M7 - a film camera

  • I'm intrigued by your use of quotations in completely inappropriate places. A normal human being would have placed them around the name of the movie. I'd love to have some insight into your weird logic.

  • haha that was a mistake XD "euro trip"

  • Does anyone know if the steel gray colour is painted on or a coated surface.

  • Painted.... unfortunately.

  • Does anyone know why these are so expensive? Is the image quality just that much better than others?

  • Image quality is good but they're expensive because of low production volume with a complicated rangefinder focusing viewfinder.

  • they are so expensive because they are made by hand in germany, they are made using the best materials in the industry and they are produced in much smaller numbers than competitors. Image quality is very good but not significantly better than cameras that cost up to 10 times less. They have unique handling and image look and feel, many think the best in the world of 35mm photography. They are very simple compared to other brands but have certain features that make them extraordinary.

  • Apparently it takes 7 hours to build each camera by hand, so they tell me.

  • hey timmy, yes: the image quality is and the quality of the whole tool is also. perfect manufacturing with the very, very best materials. almost unbreakable and so longlasting, you can give to your son and his son and ...

  • Wow, Full frame sensor in such a compact form, and in retro styling.

    Love it

    Thanks for sharing WDC
