Started playing this again a few years back - after years of player-friendly Final Fantasy and the like, I forgot how much goddamn leveling up was involved. Maybe when I retire in 40 years I'll finally beat this one.
This was almost exactly like the first time I fought Malroth... except for the bit where Malroth used HealAll on himself and finished my now weakened party. >_<
Wow. You know one of the times I fought Malroth, I had the Princess cast Chance and it created a roar that scared him away. I thought I had won the fight, but two seconds later he came back mad as crap and wiped out my party lol.
Man, RPGs did NOT mess around back then. I played all four of the NES DW games and never finished any of them. Just too much leveling if you wanted to survive. Though I think RPGs have swung too far in the other direction today; you almost have to try to get killed.
HOLY SHIT YOU ARE LEVEL 37 NO FUCKING WAY!!!!!!!!!!!1 I WAS LEVEL 80 SOMETHING WHEN I FOUGHT THIS GUY AND HE WAS HARD AS DICK!!!!!!!!! Maybe the final boss for game boy was harder.
@FireEmblemForever No theres no way I am sure I was at bare minimum level 75 or higher, I played dragon warrior 1 and 2 for game boy color not the one for nintendo.
I hate the looonnnggg cave you have to go through before you could get to Hargon's castle. Damn, powerful monsters kept coming and coming and coming...
I had to use emulator savestates to clear that irritating long cave!
Great video...thanks for the memories. Man this game is a ballbuster...but very fun and rewarding! I certainly remember the Lake Cave and those damn cobras or whatever they were...but the cave to Rhone made me cry a few times as a kid...even a max level party can get wiped out in a heartbeat in that freakin' place! 0_o
I seem to remember the accused members of moonbrooke having something interesting to say if you visit them after the defeat of Hargon and Malroth in the NES version. It was a while ago, though, and I cannot fathom what it might have been.
The hardest one by a long shot! I remember the final boss not being the hardest part of the game, but the final dungeon/cave before you go Hargon's Castle was incredibly frustrating.
Well played. Hargon/Malroth is such a huge step up in difficulty compared to the Dragonlord from DW1. I don't even think DW3's last boss is as hard as this one.
This is a classic "NOT SO FAST BUCKO!" moment. The main villan of the story's toast, yay, you turn around, start to head back, and OMG! When I first saw this, I nearly wet my pants (come on, I was only 12.)
i was 11 when i used to rule at this game

It's good to hear Malroth's theme in it's original glory after hearing it first in Dragon Quest IX.

Level 80? I believe the cap for the main character is only 45 and the other two cap at like 35.

You could have taken a short cut back to the village through that building! Why did you take the long cut?

Yeah, that cave sucked. Not only were the enemies really hard, you kept falling through the floor, too.

Dear GOD was this game hard... it was so awesome though. One of the best in the series, seconded only by DW3.

You can actually one hit this dude with a Chance spell...but just like its name/ it works or it might kill you...lol

Noticed at 2:55, the video shifts a bit. Were you trying to make room for the rest of the battle/ending?

The hardest of all Dragon Quest, no doubt about it.

What? No Shield of Strength for the Princess?
Nasty trick that Malroth has. Parry doesn't work very well on him.

i would give PoC a Falcon Sword for some reason he causes hargon and malroth more
havoc in 1 hit than the Iron spear

THIS ENTIRE GAME is a step up in difficulty from...hell, most of the others.
Who all remembers going to the Lake Cave and getting murdered by the snakes over and over?

Oh...I was murdered in many other places...many times.
