for real so much feeling in that mans natural growl and not to mention the harp skills. oh ya and one of the best backing bands in his time period. CLASSIC
"No one could match [Howlin' Wolf] for the singular ability to rock the house down to the foundation while simultaneously scaring its patrons out of its wits." So great.
ok, wolf laid a classic and please please stop looking at bass players!!!! he looks bored cause he wrote most of these songs but cant lay it down like muddy waters or wolf. nuf said
@7nkosi That bored bass player is the great Willie Dixon. It sure looks like he wanted to be anywhere but where he was. Anyone know where/when this was filmed?
kick asssss from the roots! sing what you know and were your from! now days people will never understand! People dont listen to the words...........(Hotel Calf) Johnny cash/James Brown, People sing from the soul!
@mrhoffame "Sound board guy" would be way more than I would dare to hope for, I would have been happy to have been the "toilet cleaning" ... "floor sweeping"... janitor guy.... if thats what it took to have been around to see that shit.
I have 2 disagree. Screaming properly/ well is harder to do than to sing 'cleanly.' And there are many forms of screaming, so lets not get too general here. For instance 'scream-o' screaming is generic crap that far too many ppl can do. But there are exceptional metal vocalists who are multi-dimensional such as those who sing for Burzum, Brain Drill, Augury, Cryptopsy, Acid Bath, and my favourite Opeth. Opeth is so diverse in music and singing styles. It is real music which derives from the soul
@mercury4metal he'd revolutionize metal vocalization.. metal doesnt have any soul, metal singing is just emotionless, bland screeching. he could change that, no doubt
@sinprelic - I beg to differ my friend, "Metal singing" does have emotion. The same way kids heard Holin' Wolf voice back then, it sparked an emotion in them. And the same for Metal singing. Of course singing is just emotions out loud anyway. It would still be interesting to hear a fusion of styles like that. No one has done it yet. (^_^)
@mercury4metal you can have the happy blues, the smooth blues, the rough and down and dirty blues, you can have the evil blues. it can be gospel-like or delta-like. metal, to me, seems like a one-trick pony singing kinda thing. of course, i am narrow minded though, so feel free to ignore my comment. i just really hate metal myself.
@sinprelic So because someone makes angry and/or depressive music and no happy songs that means it the music has no emotion to it? If you don't like metal, that's fine, but don't get all smartass with your ignorant comments. Bands like Metallica are just about money and fame, but REAL non-mainstream metal bands love what they do without making millions off it.
@SebbeSucksBawlz hmm, i think i was saying that metal vocals are very one-dimensional. if i did say anything about metal not having 'soul' or 'emotion', i take it back. i think it clearly does, but the vocalization in metal music does not really appeal to me as a whine or a mean moan of a suffering person. it's just a growl that anyone can do, perhaps some have perfected to do it louder than others. there are also metal singers who sing clean and classical, which can be absolutely well-done too!
@sinprelic I agree, far too many metal vocalists are boring. There is usually some skill involved in the vocals, it's just different from learning how to use your voice to form clean notes. A large number of black metal vocalists do actually sound like they're dying or bleeding to death, though most people can't stand it lol.
Lol I was watching "heavy metal pre metal evolution" special on vh1 and that is how I found this song and instantly fell in love. Howlin wolf played a large influence on heavy metal like motorhead. And metal DOES have soul. it's not emotionless bland screeching. Sounds like you've only listened to garbage like suicide silence. I suggest you try listening to Judas priest (highly influenced by opera thought not blues) or iced earth or iron maiden.
@MyDookieGoesKerplunk you may be right. i doubt i will ever be in metal but i take my sweeping statement back, i dont think that metal has no soul. it's just expressed very differently and is not meant for the sentimental listener. cheers for the recommendation!
I am, i guess the only word to describe it is, PISSED! This song is now used in a Viagra commercial! I can't believe the disrespect towards a truelly under appreciated (At least until the movie) artist!
I was Wolf's close friend & kindred collaborative spirit. We made 2 songs, he taught me harp. We made his iconic portraits, business cards, concert shots, and family photos (story at howlingwolfphotos) I understand him better than most heard claiming to. My caring interview re his childhood resolved the mystery of why he had to run away from his sadistic uncle. Wolf would be or.. is...most glad to know of so many new fans! And this video on YouTube
I have heard this guy on the movie"cadillac records"..Love the sound ..boy hit me like a ton of bricks..please give info back were I can find more info on this guy..have listened to everything on you tube..looking for more..many thanks..
Hear that young Hubert Sumlin, Now pappa hubert, pulling those classic notes out, people now wish they could play like hubert, such a gentleman, see him holding the guitar on the first frames. The first certified master of the country blues guitar
sigmonky, this is BBC footage from 1963 or 64, on the old National Folk Blues Festival tours.
I was privileged to see him on one of those tours in the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow. I'd guess that this concert was either at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon, or Belle Vue in Manchester. Anyone know?
