Tying the Toucan Salmon Fly with Davie McPhail.

Davie the dressing all the fuss is about for the Toucan is as follows. Tag 3 turns gold tinsel. Tail Red Pheasant breasr topped with Golden Pheasant tippet. Body black floss with gold oval rib, Wing Heron dyed red or magenta, Hackle Blue eared pheasant dyed Red or Magenta, Hackle Gadwall or Widgeon dyed red or magenta, Cheeks Jungle cock. Gadwall and widgeon substite is Teal or Mallard dyed, The Heron can be Red Golden Pheasant. Regards Chris.

The day after tying and uploading the old version of the Toucan fly a friend let me see the Trout and Salmon which as you know has the dressing everyone was looking for. To be honest it is a very nice looking fly and worth a place in your box as it has caught a few fish as I believe and that's why it's had a lot of attention...Thankyou for taking the time to let me know...

hi davie im just wondering where you source the blue eared pheasant from as i cant find it anywhere. lovely fly. im going to experiment with different hackles to suit the tynes peaty water :)

I have sent you a link to some feathers which may help you as I got my Blue Eared Pheasant from America a few years ago...The pattern I tyed is the original one which was used on the Dee for seatrout many years ago. The pattern that you are looking for is in this months Trout and Salmon which is more colourful and more like what we would expect with the material we have today....

We dont have salmon here in The Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, But your art is beautiful. And I so enjoy watching your work. I learn much from you no matter what you tie. Please forgive my ignorance, but what is the reasoning behind waxing your thread periodically in the method you do ? Is it only for " gripping "? Please elaborate. I've heard you mention your method of softening it before, but I dont remember where or how would you please send me a link to source. Thanks so much Sir.

Thankyou for the kind words they are really appreciated...Waxing your thread will help in many ways especially for holding and gripping materials, it will also condition the thread making it more pliable, stronger and waterproof, a great advantage when using finer threads ....
