The snow was caused by the 3rd (and most strong) cold front that week. Temperatures on the morning of the 22nd started out at 30, but fell to 20 by the mid afternoon, and it was 13 at midnight, with a strong wind, but clear skies.
I barely remember this. My parents moved to El Campo, an hour from Houston from the DC area just 5 months before (Aug), and we moved into a 1930's built farmhouse until we got situated into our new home. Bad timing on our part! This type of weather was RARELY seen even in Washington DC let alone for those of us in Texas. I remember being in Kindergarten it snowing, it was like around noon and everyone but me was so excited! Now, I know why, but I had seen snow , unlike people in GC Texas!
This was they year that 1000s of people in Houston had pipes break in their homes and business from the cold including us. It got down to 7 degrees that night. We will not see temps even close to that for another 20 years as we are still in a warm weather cycle.
I didn't live here then, but yes that was a pretty amazing event. Houston had highs below freezing for days and lows got down into the SINGLE DIGITS at the airport. To top that off, 1-2" of snow coated most of the city.
I really wish something like that would happen again!
