touched by God. sometimes I think God puts his hands in people's situation more than the people themselves. this was a point where Clapton and the Band knew, this was going on the books and they both knew they were the best at something and they knew exactly what to do. this is the sound of a practiced band that never practiced.....there were even technical difficulties with straps and not one beat was missed.....WOW

Well, wether or not you like Eric more than Robbie, or Robbie more than Eric... The fact still stands that Eric has established himself as one of the True Guitar Heroes and well.... Chases are very likely that no one commenting here IS... An opinion pertaining to who is better or not is just plain silly... Enjoy the music! It was fueled by things that American society "frowns" upon most of the time. :D
Robbie "owns" Clapton in this fucking awesome vid. R.R.'s got some "wicked" guitar skills. (No offense Clapton fans, so don't deluge me with hate responses). Just one person' s opinion. peace.
@glenneveaux Robbie is a gracious guitar player. He should have taken more leads but Eric wouldn't allow it. That's okay because you can see by the audiences applause how much they appreciated Robbie's effort. Not taking anything away from Eric, but there are so many guitarists out there that can play circles around him these days. Just my opinion.
dude, Clapton is 66, no shit others can outplay him these days, what a ridiculous comparison to make. Can a 66 year old athlete compete with a college athlete?
@flahwah Well-spotted, mate - I missed that one...
For those who missed it - 0:45 - Clapton's guitar strap came-free, the great-man almost broke his toe. Just prior to this you can see how the strap is 'secured' upside down.. This happens on a blue moon. Professionals usually make it out to be a part of the show. Non-pros usually have to stop playing to pull their pants up again from around their ankles.
Fortunately for rock history, Claption's guitar strap button comes off at 0.46 and Robbie Robertson is able to fill in with a solo without missing a note. That then inspires EC to really cut loose. One of the legendary performances by all....
@AFatGuyNamedPete That's certainly a part of it! I would have liked to hear more from him and less from Eric. Not that Eric isn't a great guitarist, it's just that we don't get to hear from Robbie enough.
is it just me or is this about the best ive seen of clapton, and robbie sure keeps up, i love his pinchy style. The best dvd of all time, and yet that concert was soo much better, The Band was really disappointed
Hey Jame, A rockin video Buddy. Who plays the fender better.? Thanks for sharing this great shoot-out with us all! I hope we can share alot of music. Your pal...I'm Listening...The Captain....
How can 2 people not like this...and vote it down....2 people who don't get out much, and they have trouble breathing, with their heads up their ass....
One of the coolest things about this performance is the look on Clapton's face at about 2:45 as he clearly takes great pleasure in watching and hearing Robbie's solo.
@Lilley313 sorry. you are wrong. clapton is god. robbie is good to but seemed to depend on double stops to keep up with claptons speed. honestly, clapton could have kept soloing for another 3 hours without letting up
clapton is good, however robbie is more interesting to watch. Kinda like the master chuck berry. Rock and roll is about attitude and both robbie and eric shine equally *)
@thecosmicstring --yes,the original version of this song was done in 1957 by bobby `blue` bland, charted no. 43 on billboard-----do a youtube google on him and you will have the song...ps,its called farther up the road
Robbie said in a moment during the filming of The Last Waltz (and, his comment was filmed also, of course) that "Here was this God of Rock n Roll and his guitar strap breaks". He saved his friend like anybody would and Clapton would have done it for him. I love the men of the 70's and all of the modern outlaw fame that they gave us. And, these cowboys knew how to do it.
@echoes555 nahh not at all imo. Claptons tone is way better and and his touch and feel is out of this world. Robbies not bad but hes no were near as good as clapton
chals444, if you can't HEAR the notes, and know where they are on the fret-board, you still have some playing to do. Just sit there, and hammer it out until you can - or till you get as near as you are going to - this is the very nature or rock guitar, it's not a f******g piano-recital! We will ALL play it differently, every time, and that is what makes rock and blues individual and so special!
No, only God is God, but I've heard Eric, with Cream and then in the years after, play so that time ceases to exist. My favorite: him sitting in with Buddy Guy, New Orleans House in Berkeley, 1967. If only there were a video of that, but I'm certain there is not. Just in my aging head....
Only about 50 or 60 of us did. It was a small club that booked phenomenal acts- Santana started there, and Steve Miller when he was still a blues cat. Hard to believe it ever happened. Technology has its drawbacks, but what I'd have given to have a small digital video camera........ the stuff of dreams. It's okay. Life evens out, if you're lucky, and I have been. Best to you. tom

This from the film THE LAST WALTZ, directed by Martin Scoresese in 1976 about THE BAND'S goodbye performance at Winterland in San Francisco. It is available on DVD.
This swings. I prefer this tempo to other Clapton versions further on up the road in his career.
