1846alexander is correct, in complete chronological order. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion on who's heavier and so on and so forth...I'm just backing up 1846alexander, he's on the ball, as they say:-).
@pkpheanix7 not even close..Exodus was out long before Metallica..Kirk Hammett came from Exodus...and Venom had 3 albums before Metallica> 1981,Welcome To Hell,1982,Black Metal>and 1983,At War With Satan. Exodus had way more material than Metallica at that time in 1983 but because of a label dispute, could not get Bonded By Blood released on time.Kill 'Em All is one of the greatest Thrash Albums ever recorded>but not the first. Not by a long shot.
@1846alexander Venom was still in the new wave of british heavy metal, bands like Metallica, slayer were heavier, and even the guys from exodus said they were influenced by Metallica, you could argue that there was thrash before but Metallica was the first band to make good thrash, but bonded by blood kicks ass.
@Spunkalish It's not very easy to say exactly what band came first, demo speaking, they both released stuff since 1984, full leanght speaking posessed came first in 1985 and Necrophagia in 1986, master started very early too, with a demo in 1985 and an unreleased album the same year(officially released in 2003). Anyway some people say the very first death metal band was hellhammer, and it's not bullshit at all, they were pretty much death metal sounding even if still in rough way
I would say that elements of thrash were around before Venom and Motorhead. Songs like 'Stone Cold Crazy' and 'Symptom of the Universe' can be considered as thrash songs.
Venom did nothing that Motorhead hadn't already done before. Not saying I dont like Venom but, There just a Motorhead copy with more distortion, occultism, and sluts.
@Gfury2000 yeah they definately did, their lyrical themes were highly revolutionary, they went to an extreme that no one had yet explored. as far as the actual music and their sound, i guess you are right
@Gfury2000 They contributed an athstetic yes, but little more(especialy to black metal). Look at early Bathory or Hellhammer or even slayer(which were rehersing or releasing albums at the same time as Venom). YOu do mak agood point on the lyrical content how ever. sry for mispelings. ive had a litttle to much to drink so far lol
Please check a Death/Black band which is very good in my channel called Dusk Chapel I try to advertise them to make them famous because noone knows how to listen to great music nowadays... It's one from the rare bands like Death and the father of Death Metal and master musician Chuck Schuldiner that make all the songs of one album masterpieces and not just one or two songs... Here is a sample: watch?v=Kawf4mTM6qI. Copy paste on google as it is or on the address bar of youtube Spread the word!
@Tettuli That might be a little difficult. Maybe with all new members. Mike T. is the only one left I believe (and retired). Jeff is in a wheelchair, Mike S is a drug Counselor, and Larry, well we all know where he is. I don't think he going to roll over on Primus anytime soon.
@BadassAnons Metallica - boring crybabies Dark Angel - not that good american thrash Kreator - trying to sound heavier than sodom Megadeth - boring bad american speed metal Slayer - show no mercy was the greatest album ever and my opinion the first, first wave black metal band Sepultura - first demo and album were the best but everything sucks after that Anthrax - sucks Overkill - boring Exodus - good first album but not great testament - not even thrash and destruction and sodom rule
@BadassAnons no, Metallica aren't the originators. Venom are. They influenced the creation of thrash metal, black metal, and somehow, death metal. It was either Celtic Frost or Venom that Death was influenced by. Maybe both!
@HellsAngel05 Yeah i just copied this off some video. And yes everyone knows venom was the first real thrash band, even though they ALSO started black metal.
@BadassAnons Venom was every genre that was around and forming at that time. They were thrash metal, power metal, speed metal, a tiny bit of death metal, black metal, and a tiny bit of doom
@HellsAngel05 I'm pretty sure venom was way before death metal even started. No doubt, they are the creators of black metal along with kind diamond, and for me they have abit of the rest that you mentioned, doom, power etc... But venom was the band that pretty much started the thrash metal influence. I've never heard a band play that kinda music before venom.
@BadassAnons There's a difference between the first people to do something and the first people to do it right... this is why early Metallica is so revered. They didn't exactly invent anything, they just did it better than anyone else did and it took the rest of the world a long time to catch up.
@BadassAnons Metallica the originators? Are you fucking kidding me right? If you listen the No Life 'Til Leather demo, it's not thrash metal, it's speed metal, the originators are bands like Venom that influenced a lot Thrash, Death and Black Metal, and Overkill, the ones who played one of the first thrash metal songs in the Power in Black demo. Even Metal Church and Exodus have played thrash before Metallica.
@DarknessDescends97 i copied it off a video dude i already was in a conversation with another dude... And i'll say it again the originators for me are Venom, i don't care about how they started black metal, they fucking started and influenced thrash end of story.
As far as influence goes, don't forget Venom. Welcome to Hell (1981) and Black Metal (1982) opened so many many doors to things to come. Hellhammers early stuff was also hugely influential. You can also hear the roots of thrash in NWBHM bands like Jaguar and Mythra. Check out Mythra's Overlord from the classic 1979 EP Death & Destiny. Then check out Metallicas debut Kill 'em all. Did someone say inspiration??
@theddymetal it was black metal for the time and how it sounded when it first came out it's like saying that metallicas is classic rock because they don't sound like slipknot
I have to disagree with you calling Possessed black metal at the begining. Possessed was death metal from the start. Black Metal was already established. During the time of the Death Metal emergence in the U.S. The Norwegian Black Metal scene (2nd wave) was doing the same.
I usually don't comment on pages, but some things need clarification simply to give credit where credit is due. Not being a douche. Thrash til death bro!
@mrskwisgaar venam was in fact black metal if you keep saying they are not I am going to cut your mother's labia out you little poser grindcore is not black metal bands that have cookie monster vocals are not black metal
“And Jesus said get down on your knees and pray for forgiveness Satan has corrupted your maids with his evil temptations repent sinners repent pray for forgiveness so that God won’t send you to HELL” ooh yeah.
@CupisHomines The lyrics is a intro of a song from the band THE GREAT KAT. The song is called SATAN GOES TO CHURCH. The band is Kliller the singer is a girl and the lead guitarist I recommend it. "United For Thrash"
Venom was the first black metal,Death was the first death metal band,Metallica was the first thrash metal band blah,blah,blah-who really gives a flying fuck!?!Either listen to badass black, death and thrash metal or go bitch about somewhere else.I don't really give a shit who was first at what or when-either stop bitching about it or settle it in the pit like men!!
@MrSkwisgaar13243 Clearly if you look at what I said you would see that I said I really don't care who was first at whatever fucking genre.I meam in the end does it really matter? You don't have to label every band into a catagory do you?If you say their part of the new wave of british heavy metal then that's fine man.
Possessed is considered the first TRUE death metal band :P because in the early 80's Venom was black metal and slayer was just extreme thrash metal hope that clarifies things.
When possessed started they were thrash reminiscent of Venom I think they not slayers reign in blood album were the sole contributers of Death metal The reign in blood album did do its part but Venom and Possessed contributed more at least to me. Death was the first Death Metal Band period.
@Tettuli Be aware that the band that would ultimately become Repulsion (then called Genocide) also released two demos in 1984, and Chuck Shuldiner worked with them briefly the following year.
@ih8makinusernames You're more-or-less right, but Morbid Angel's "Abominations of Desolation" was recorded in 1986, and all but one song was polished and rerecorded for future albums. They had their sound almost from the beginning, though with some maturation and experience, got better as time went on.
@moparmonster1965 True, I was only thinking back to Altars of Madness and totally forget they'd been around since 1985 so in my mind I had their formation somewhere around 1987. Simple error on my part.
Bootlegs of "Abomininations..." had been floating around for years before the band decided to rerelease it. I bought it thinking it was a new release back then, but it was still worth owning.
@ih8makinusernames I would also cite Celtic Frost, Bathory, and Venom as being essential to what would become death metal, thought it's hard to pick just one or two that were important. One name I never hear as influencial is Rigor Mortis, the band that got me into thrash and heavy metal.
@moparmonster1965 Venom and Bathory it's arguable. Celtic Frost: Yes. They simply slipped my mind when I made this list. Into the Crypt of Rays and Circle of the Tyrants are definitely early death/black metal.
no, all the bands considered death metal before death weren't anywhere near as well thought out. their music was a thrashy mess and wasn't well developed. scream bloody gore was the first full-fledged death metal album. some sounds and lyrical concepts came before them, but death was the first band to really put everything together.
@ih8makinusernames You cant forget about the first 2 releases from Sepultura, Bloody Vengence from Vulcano, and Pesecution mania from Sodom, which also influenced DM.
@ih8makinusernames Come on it was just the image. But anyway listen carefully to their riffs and especially Triumph of Death. I think their riffs inspired all death metallers
The genre expands quite a bit, I mean, metal has more subgenres than pretty much any other genre. None the less, I agree, that early metal is influential in a huge way. Let us not forget Death.
@NarcoTerrorismos well lets see......who the fuck cares hmmmm maybe the fucking fans who want to know the roots of this type of music!! ever thought about that
@KissMeImPunk That because by the time Scream Bloody Gore was released the genre was established. There is a difference between a Classic and an influence. Yes I left out DD, but honestly I only have 500 characters and the true list would be immense.
I hope everyone realizes, that if Death hadn't have done their thing, there would be no Death Metal, right? I mean, the genre Death Metal was CREATED by Death for shits sake. Just makin that clear lol. Other then that, these guys are good \m/
@lord1haber not really dude, Death Metal was created by POSSESSED. They were the main inspiration for Death & Chuck (vocals!). You should read some old interviews with Chuck. Seven Churches was always his fave album. he'd heard on it how to play Death Metal.
well, you can listen to yourself & hear: POSSESSED is more EXTREME than Death!
Though early Death is amazing, but POSSESSED always butcher them up.
with these stunning MASSACRATING RIFFS Death don't have!

what is this? the vid where we get to categorize every early 80s extreme metal band we like? Let me try:
Venom-mix of thrash and speed metal
Metallica-pure thrash (obviously)
Megadeth-thrash
Anthrax (thrash w/ crossover influences)
Slayer-thrash
Possessed-demos were thrash, but their studio albums were more of pure death metal.
Dea†h-death metal
Kreator (when they started, they were black/thrash, then they became death/thrash. By Terrible Certainty, they were pure thrash.
Is that enough for ya?
HellsAngel05 7 months ago
@HellsAngel05 1) Metallica - The Originators, THE KINGS
2) Dark Angel - Only band that would scare Slayer
3) Kreator - The German Slayer, but better
4) Megadeth - Metallica’s Evil (but awesome) twin
5) Slayer - Controversial Satanic thrashers
6) Sepultura - South American per-cursers to death metal
7) Anthrax - Know how to have a freakin good time
8) Overkill - Consistently heavy through career
9) Exodus - They’re like, Lets destroy Stuff!
10) Testament - Kick-Ass name, always heavy

@MrSkwisgaar13243 Clearly if you look at what I said you would see that I said I really don't care who was first at whatever fucking genre.I meam in the end does it really matter? You don't have to label every band into a catagory do you?If you say their part of the new wave of british heavy metal then that's fine man.
38decembers 9 months ago
@MrSkwisgaar13243 I second that notion. Venom was in fact NWOBHM.
thrash6664 9 months ago
@thrash6664 make sense?
MrSkwisgaar13243 9 months ago
@MrSkwisgaar13243 Yes. A lot of Venom "fans" don't know that.
thrash6664 9 months ago
Possessed is considered the first TRUE death metal band :P because in the early 80's Venom was black metal and slayer was just extreme thrash metal hope that clarifies things.
zimplexify 10 months ago
When possessed started they were thrash reminiscent of Venom I think they not slayers reign in blood album were the sole contributers of Death metal The reign in blood album did do its part but Venom and Possessed contributed more at least to me. Death was the first Death Metal Band period.

death is the first death metal. there was a demo that came out in 83 and 84 that was way more brutal than this. mantas
jamesthemetalhead21 11 months ago
@jamesthemetalhead21 possessed and mantas released their first demos in 1984, mantas didn't release demos in 1983
Tettuli 11 months ago
@Tettuli Be aware that the band that would ultimately become Repulsion (then called Genocide) also released two demos in 1984, and Chuck Shuldiner worked with them briefly the following year.
moparmonster1965 11 months ago
Possessed is the first death metal band, but Chuck is the father of death metal!!

The biggest in fluences for Death metal were:
This album
Kreators "Endless Pain" and "Pleasure to Kill"
Slayer's "Reign in Blood"
Everything Death Released Pre-1987
After that Death metal was pretty much defined and then you got Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, etc.
ih8makinusernames 1 year ago 33
@ih8makinusernames Celtic Frost and Venom were very influential for the genre too if not more.
Chips185 1 year ago
@ih8makinusernames ya and now we have bs like suicide silence that think their death metal
olverasamuel 11 months ago
@ih8makinusernames You're more-or-less right, but Morbid Angel's "Abominations of Desolation" was recorded in 1986, and all but one song was polished and rerecorded for future albums. They had their sound almost from the beginning, though with some maturation and experience, got better as time went on.
moparmonster1965 11 months ago
@moparmonster1965 True, I was only thinking back to Altars of Madness and totally forget they'd been around since 1985 so in my mind I had their formation somewhere around 1987. Simple error on my part.
ih8makinusernames 11 months ago
@ih8makinusernames No harm, no foul.
Bootlegs of "Abomininations..." had been floating around for years before the band decided to rerelease it. I bought it thinking it was a new release back then, but it was still worth owning.
moparmonster1965 11 months ago
@ih8makinusernames I would also cite Celtic Frost, Bathory, and Venom as being essential to what would become death metal, thought it's hard to pick just one or two that were important. One name I never hear as influencial is Rigor Mortis, the band that got me into thrash and heavy metal.
moparmonster1965 11 months ago
@moparmonster1965 Venom and Bathory it's arguable. Celtic Frost: Yes. They simply slipped my mind when I made this list. Into the Crypt of Rays and Circle of the Tyrants are definitely early death/black metal.
ih8makinusernames 11 months ago
@ih8makinusernames don't forget death with chuck

@ih8makinusernames You forgot Death's "Scream Bloody Gore"
HeavyMetalBeliever 10 months ago
@ih8makinusernames
I think Slayer's "Hell Awaits" was more of an influence because it was much darker than Reign In Blood, but that's just me.
ThrashTillDeath123 10 months ago
@ih8makinusernames then whats your opinion on Deaths Scream Bloody Gore?
betrayeduser 10 months ago
@ih8makinusernames wat about early sepultura?
dapik5 10 months ago
@ih8makinusernames "To Mega Therion" by Celtic Frost and "Morbid Visions" by Sepultura could be added, but they weren't as big as the 4 you listed.
ConquerTheCemetery 10 months ago
@ih8makinusernames
no, all the bands considered death metal before death weren't anywhere near as well thought out. their music was a thrashy mess and wasn't well developed. scream bloody gore was the first full-fledged death metal album. some sounds and lyrical concepts came before them, but death was the first band to really put everything together.
Fluffypopcicle 10 months ago
@ih8makinusernames You cant forget about the first 2 releases from Sepultura, Bloody Vengence from Vulcano, and Pesecution mania from Sodom, which also influenced DM.
wolf4241991 10 months ago
@ih8makinusernames you forget dark angel and of course the mighty HELLHAMMER
TheMetalHead554 8 months ago
@TheMetalHead554 Hellhammer was more black metal bro.
ih8makinusernames 8 months ago
@ih8makinusernames Come on it was just the image. But anyway listen carefully to their riffs and especially Triumph of Death. I think their riffs inspired all death metallers
TheMetalHead554 8 months ago
@ih8makinusernames
The genre expands quite a bit, I mean, metal has more subgenres than pretty much any other genre. None the less, I agree, that early metal is influential in a huge way. Let us not forget Death.

@ih8makinusernames Endless Pain? I would consider that album more of an influence towards black metal.
TheHerbaIist 7 months ago
@TheHerbaIist It's an influence for many things. Same deal with Sodom's "Obsessed by Cruelty".
ih8makinusernames 7 months ago
@ih8makinusernames For today's death metal the biggest influenced is deicide.
BadassAnons 7 months ago
@BadassAnons That because Deicide wrecks shit!
warlockmetal1 7 months ago
@ih8makinusernames That's sad how you don't even mention Scream Bloody Gore as a key influence. Well, that and Darkness Descends.
KissMeImPunk 6 months ago
@KissMeImPunk That because by the time Scream Bloody Gore was released the genre was established. There is a difference between a Classic and an influence. Yes I left out DD, but honestly I only have 500 characters and the true list would be immense.

Slayer could of been death metal on Hell Awaits if they had these vocals.
DanJ30 1 year ago
@DanJ30 Slayer didn't need other singers to make death metal.

I wonder what a metal fan thought of this in 1985, Funny to think of how many were inspired by it and never really knew.
xbertocoaylax 1 year ago
I hope everyone realizes, that if Death hadn't have done their thing, there would be no Death Metal, right? I mean, the genre Death Metal was CREATED by Death for shits sake. Just makin that clear lol. Other then that, these guys are good \m/
lord1haber 1 year ago
@lord1haber not really dude, Death Metal was created by POSSESSED. They were the main inspiration for Death & Chuck (vocals!). You should read some old interviews with Chuck. Seven Churches was always his fave album. he'd heard on it how to play Death Metal.
well, you can listen to yourself & hear: POSSESSED is more EXTREME than Death!
Though early Death is amazing, but POSSESSED always butcher them up.
with these stunning MASSACRATING RIFFS Death don't have!
hence are POSSESSED also thrash!
DomentorTheOnlyTrue 1 year ago
Possessed are clearly thrash. Death was the first real death metal band.
