The Republican solution to eliminate taxes is good but cut what taxes? There are only three things to tax in any economy: land, labor or capital. Completely eliminating taxes on labor and capital is an economically sound idea because that would eliminate every disincentive and skewed economic decision caused by such taxation. The only thing left is to tax the community created value of land and that is the only appropriate thing to tax. Taxing land value merely takes back what belongs to us all.

Not only do Republican states have to take that ill-gotten money, but it's stupid to say they should refuse to take it, when it's their taxpaying citizens who are going to have to pay it back whether they use the money or not.
The provision was put in by Jim Clyburn, as revenge against Republican Governor Mark Sanford when Sanford advocated that the states should be getting rid of wasteful spending instead of joining in this behemoth crap sandwich bill.
I point to 2 states, California, with it's pointless and wasteful spending, and extremely business prohibitive laws, and my own state Maryland, where Democrat Mike Miller was whining that we "only" raised our budget by .7 percent, instead of reducing it!

HOLD IT RIGHT THERE!. That is a LIE. S.C. House member (and Majority Whip) Jim Clyburn stuck a provision in the bill that basically states: "You don't want this money? TOUGH! your taking it!" Because in less than 45 days, a governor refuses to take any, then their power to accept or not is ripped out of their hands and given to the state legislature.
" Senators who voted no are allready making sure that money will benefit their home districts...they do not have to accpet the money. So get over it.."
If Republican states don't take the money , does that mean their states won't owe that part of the debt, either?
No matter where you live, everyone MUST flood the phone lines and email by contacting their senators and representatives. I know that $550 billion of our collective taxes went overseas in 2008 as interest on our debt.
I know that $700 billion was spent bailing out banks that made bad loans.
I know that $15 billion went to US car companies that couldn't earn it in sales.

Except that most roads are state owned, public schools are paid by local property taxes, and police are either state or locally funded. I have no problem with federal taxes being used for the military or bridges- that's what the government is supposed to do and allowed to do under the Constitution.
The government is not supposed to force me to live a certain way, which is what it would do if it controlled everything. They would burn the Constitution if they could get away with it.
Except that the rise in home prices, partly because of CRA, made developers build an abundance of real estate that couldn't all be sold at the prices they were asking for. The banks are to blame as well; they liked the higher home prices because it gave them more collateral to borrow off of.
It doesn't really matter, though, since now they can basically borrow money for free from the Federal Reserve, which causes inflation as more dollars enter the market out of nowhere.

Ron Paul was right, maybe some of these Republicans should head in and apologize for making fun of him in the debates. While no one agrees 100% with anyone, Ron Paul was on the money on the economy and the massive government debt spending that even Republicans decided to get behind for some reason as long as Bush said it was ok. This is standard procedure for all bills and this is the way it's been done for decades. It's a problem and needs to be fixed, but it is nothing new and people need to understand that. Bills are huge, they are not read or understood before a vote. Our politicians have no idea what laws they are passing. It's not just this bill tho. It's all bills.
When will Republicans get it? Tax cuts don't work and have never worked. What you end up with is a massive cut back on services---things that everyone of us expect our government to provide for us. Tax cuts are directed to the rich and are a payback for the rich who support Republican politicians in their quest for power. You know who they are---the guys who say they hope Pres. Obama will fail. Except that tax cuts DO work, and that's why there are many in the stimulus bill, mostly targeted to poorer families. In addition, cutting taxes on businesses creates new wealth by giving them the resources to hire new workers. Government services simply redistribute wealth instead of creating new wealth- the foundation of a strong economy.

(do a little research) The reason the cuts are in the bill is because President Obama (mistakenly) held out an olive branch to the obstructionist Republicans. He also allowed things to be removed from the bill in the interest of bipartisanship. I hope that he has learned that reaching out was a complete waste of time and Repubs will always be obstructionist and will always mouth the same old failed ideologies till the end of time.

Republican's voted against this bill because it is a bad bill- it has no guarantee of stimulating anything except growth of government and restrictions on civil liberties.
It is government pork at its very worst and morally comparable to the Patriot Act in both the fear-mongering tactics used to get it passed quickly and its potential (read "guarantee") to be abused by Washington.
Tax cuts sound logical, but history has proven that tax cuts don't work. The Repubs voted against this because it goes against their ideology no matter how wrong it has proven to be in the past. They are about slinging their weight around and doing whatever possible to be difficult because if they aren't in charge they prefer this nation to fail. I'm not entirely happy with the bill, but we wouldn't be in this mess if Bush and his cohorts hadn't been totally incompetent.
Actually, the Community Reinvestment Act (passed by Clinton) is mostly to blame. This act encouraged banks to make loans to high-risk borrowers in an attempt to allow poorer people to buy houses. It worked- but it caused increased real-estate demand, driving prices up.
Then when the high-risk borrowers can't pay, the houses foreclose, bloat the market and drive prices down. This destroys the value of the bank's assets, and they go bankrupt, causing the so-called "credit crunch" we see today.

The real reason for the crisis was the CDS derivatives and was in effect during Bush's watch. U.S. Sen. Phil Gramm (R-TX) introduced the Act on behalf of financial industry lobbyists in 1997 and unfortunately Clinton signed the bill in 2000.
CDS's may have caused problems in wall street but it didn't put people out of their homes.

The Republican solution to eliminate taxes is good but cut what taxes? There are only three things to tax in any economy: land, labor or capital. Completely eliminating taxes on labor and capital is an economically sound idea because that would eliminate every disincentive and skewed economic decision caused by such taxation. The only thing left is to tax the community created value of land and that is the only appropriate thing to tax. Taxing land value merely takes back what belongs to us all.

I know that $550 billion of our collective taxes went overseas in 2008 as interest on our debt.
I know that $700 billion was spent bailing out banks that made bad loans.
I know that $15 billion went to US car companies that couldn't earn it in sales.
This isn't the price of a civilized society- it's the price of living under a corrupt government. Whatever money the government didn't print out of thin air it took by force in the form of taxes. I think I can spend it better than them.

Except that most roads are state owned, public schools are paid by local property taxes, and police are either state or locally funded. I have no problem with federal taxes being used for the military or bridges- that's what the government is supposed to do and allowed to do under the Constitution.
The government is not supposed to force me to live a certain way, which is what it would do if it controlled everything. They would burn the Constitution if they could get away with it.

Except that the rise in home prices, partly because of CRA, made developers build an abundance of real estate that couldn't all be sold at the prices they were asking for. The banks are to blame as well; they liked the higher home prices because it gave them more collateral to borrow off of.
It doesn't really matter, though, since now they can basically borrow money for free from the Federal Reserve, which causes inflation as more dollars enter the market out of nowhere.

Bills are huge, they are not read or understood before a vote. Our politicians have no idea what laws they are passing. It's not just this bill tho. It's all bills.

Except that tax cuts DO work, and that's why there are many in the stimulus bill, mostly targeted to poorer families. In addition, cutting taxes on businesses creates new wealth by giving them the resources to hire new workers. Government services simply redistribute wealth instead of creating new wealth- the foundation of a strong economy.
I know how to spend my money better than Washington. If you don't think so, let them tax you till there's nothing left. As for me, I call it theft.

(do a little research) The reason the cuts are in the bill is because President Obama (mistakenly) held out an olive branch to the obstructionist Republicans. He also allowed things to be removed from the bill in the interest of bipartisanship. I don't know how you can possibly argue that allowing citizens to keep more of their money is a bad idea.
Republican's voted against this bill because it is a bad bill- it has no guarantee of stimulating anything except growth of government and restrictions on civil liberties.
It is government pork at its very worst and morally comparable to the Patriot Act in both the fear-mongering tactics used to get it passed quickly and its potential (read "guarantee") to be abused by Washington.

Tax cuts sound logical, but history has proven that tax cuts don't work. The Repubs voted against this because it goes against their ideology no matter how wrong it has proven to be in the past. They are about slinging their weight around and doing whatever possible to be difficult because if they aren't in charge they prefer this nation to fail. I'm not entirely happy with the bill, but we wouldn't be in this mess if Bush and his cohorts hadn't been totally incompetent.

Actually, the Community Reinvestment Act (passed by Clinton) is mostly to blame. This act encouraged banks to make loans to high-risk borrowers in an attempt to allow poorer people to buy houses. It worked- but it caused increased real-estate demand, driving prices up.
Then when the high-risk borrowers can't pay, the houses foreclose, bloat the market and drive prices down. This destroys the value of the bank's assets, and they go bankrupt, causing the so-called "credit crunch" we see today.

The real reason for the crisis was the CDS derivatives and was in effect during Bush's watch. U.S. Sen. Phil Gramm (R-TX) introduced the Act on behalf of financial industry lobbyists in 1997 and unfortunately Clinton signed the bill in 2000.

Thank you for posting this. I have emailed my reps a few times but they don't listen. I am a libertarian now cause I am pissed at both parties. This spending package is the worst thing this country has ever done. I don't want socialism. The problem is that even though you republicans have the right ideas you have done a bad job of doing them. Please get it right when this country revolts against the DNC in a few years. Hopefully it wont be to late.

Just get rid of the Federal Reserve and have Congress print its own debt free money. The problem is international bankers constantly skimming off the top of everyones' hard earned wages.
Imagine if every time you made a meal for yourself someone would take a 1/3 of it away before you even started eating.

Obama says the stimulus will "create or save" about 3 million jobs.
Pelosi has twice said we are losing 500 million jobs a month. (But she meant 500 thousand.)
A year at 500k jobs/month is 6 million jobs. So if a year from now we've lost 3 million jobs instead of 6 million, Obama will claim that the stimulus was a monumental success.

I think you are correct. But the situation may be even worse than your scenario. The rate of job loss has been increasing, as such we may lose more than 500,000 jobs per month.
Even if the rate does not change, our economy is in CRISIS!!! That's why many economists are concerned that the stimulus package did not contain nearly enough spending.
Sorry Republicans but there will be more large scale govt. spending measures for you to rail against.
In the meantime, party on.

The GOP lost because it lost it's conservative principles. The DNC will lose big in 2010 because they are using socialist principles to cripple the United States. The GOP cannot come back unitl it regains the trust of it's conservative base. If GOP does it will win as big as 1994. If not then we are in for a long dark ride to chaos.
