What an amazing upload! Its sometimes easy to forget how emotionally deep his performing was because he was such a hellraiser. I think the two went hand in hand....I don't think a sober John Martyn could ever given us such beautiful music.
This version of this song gets me every time. Its fantastic how JM plays a song uniquely every time. I love him so much for his music. to think a year has almost passed since he left us. RIP John, you are so missed.
A truly beautiful song. This electric version sounds so different from the acoustic. Equally enchanting but I love this version, there's something special about it. Look how a gently stoned John just slips into 'his own world' as he begins to play, at the beginning of the song. This sound and tone of his voice inspires for me a warm, comfortable, safe feeling like being wrapped in a blanket and just drifting away. This version of this song gets me every time..........
I saw him in a little church in Edinburgh back in 85 when John Wayne was one of the new songs...he and Danny were excuisite ..I still rate it as one of the best concerts ever...great Scottish musician,,,one of the few unique people !!
JOHN MARTYN...KING OF KINGS! SOUL, ANGUISH AND LOVE! saw him 3 weeks before he died in birmingham uk...was unbelievable...mesmerising even. WITH ALL LOVE IN THE WORLD TO JOHN AND HIS FAMILY x
He was only 60. No age at all. He was ravaged by his consumption of booze and drugs. Danny Thompson is 10 yeard older than him and he looks as fit as a fiddle (no pun intended). What a waste :/
Do you know what, I'm getting sick and tired of this. It's not a waste and it isn't a shame that he is dead. Very, very sad yes, but his life was not wasted as during the short period he was on this earth, he produced more beauty than most, pushed the boundaries of music and enjoyed himself. There's no shame or waste in that. I'm just glad that he lived and enhanced mine and so many other's lives. There are very few that have done that. Here's hoping you're having a big spliff in heaven.
Fell in love, made love and lost my love to this song in the early 80s. So thank you. And it's a great clip, so thanks for posting. Bless JM, or more importantly slainte!
I think the performance of him and DT on the OGWT was better than this, his voice was better and the whole thing seemed more emotional. Not taking anything away from this though!
His performance of this song on 'The Man Upstairs' dvd is simply amazing as are his renditions of his other music. Amazing how much beer he puts away in that show though :)
This is an amazing find! I first saw John in 1981 when this was filmed. To tell you the truth I had forgotten how good he sounded, how fabulous he looked and how much I enjoyed him despite the initial shock of seeing him front a band after many years solo/acoustic. As the memories come back it is painful as hell to know that you wont be seeing him again. Thanks to this video from the Rotters Club we can all re-live it. Thank you so much for posting and for making my day, week, month, year xx
God Bless you theRottersClub, for posting this. Absolutely amazing. Great sound too. Good sound quality live videos of John Martyn, are actually hard to find, on youtube. You've put that right, and how, with one of my fave songs. Thanks. And...Good Night, John, R.I.P.
Thank you for your kind comments. When I posted this I could never have imagined that John would pass away only a few weeks later. He was a true one off and will be sadly missed.
Anytime, theRottersClub, anytime. BBC TV did some ace outside broadcasts of music events in Universities, etc, with Rock Goes to College and others. If there is any more John Martyn from this actual concert, don't be shy...post it! I have put "Martyn" + "Rock goes to College" into the dialog box in youtube...but this seems to be the only song. Any more?!! anyhow, if this all you have, it is more than enough. Superb sound fidelity. Thanks again.
Such a beautiful man (when he was young), such a wondrous voice, such an inspired, emotional and innovative guitar player. Wish I'd been to more of his gigs in his hey day - but I'll treasure the memories of Manchester in the '70s. "Bless the weather that brought you to me, curse the storm that takes you away". May you rest in peace Big Man.

I have listened to many versions on youtube of his "one world" songs. Well nothing comparable to what I heard on the record.
So congratulations to those musicians and to the producer as well.
