Don't forget we were the world's first developed country and are very modern on numerous counts. Just as modern as any other yet we have such a great history i think it would be a great shame to lose sight of that. It will be a very sad day for this country when the Queen dies. Because that will cement alot of what your vision is for us. Until then, i wanna embrace what we have.

@pidgeblev Those are valid points. When the Queen dies there will be a sea change of opinion as the next incumbent to the "top job" has less respect and appeal. I am all for a democratically elected president. It is the only way forward. But that has to be in a gradual transistional process and not a quick abolition after her passing It would be cruel to do that to an elderly woman now.. A President chosen and elected by the people and not a lackey by the politicians, Ughh!

@BRUTUALTRUTH I know that you'd love to see the monarchy collapse in this country and the Queen's place taken by some former politician like Blair who was widely vilified in their heyday and is merely accepting the office of President as a way of improving their own image. Modern Britain has a lot of problems, yes, but the monarchy is not one of them.

Just because a leader is elected doesn't mean they'll be accepted or liked by many of the people they lead - remember Thatcher and Blair?

@MrPcosay the royal standard is raised whenever the Queen is in Parliament. After the Queen leaves Parliament, the UK Flag is raised again. That is also the case in Buckingham Palace. Whenever the Queen is in residence, the royal standard is flown. When the Queen is not in the Palace, the UK flag is flown. Usually the Union flag is flown because the Queen is always busy with her appointments elsewhere in the country.

Its a sham that at parilament you cannot take pcitures inside and there is no guide book. Its sad becuase there are thousands of paintings and pictures I like at parilament but I only got to see them for only 2 seconds becuase the tour guide rushed through the building. I even got told off for walking a meter away from the group.

The Commons' behavior shows just how base England/GB (and other countries can be) without some more ennobling principle. Perhaps you can explain the mechanics of the State of the Union address in the US, then (and not just what it's about, but rather things such as who escorts the President into the House, the "designated survivor", the role of the Supreme Court Justices, etc)? @shahideurope Your quite right what I meant is its best if you have some one above the government and parliament that acts as a safe guard between each general election. This person can be either a Monarch or a President. As a supporter of the Monarchy I am quite happy with the current system. However I can appreciate why you might be disgruntled as it has been 300 years since parliament decided who would be our monarch.
