I also believe it's Steve Winwood on organ but whoever it is they were on point. This is one of Jimi's all time killer jazzy jam blues tunes. Funky like toe jams but sophisticated like a tea party. The song epitomizes laying back on rainy day and whoever did the video was on it. Thanks!
@MrBillc1023 According to Wikipedia ("Credits taken from the 1993 MCA compact disc booklet."), Winwood played on Voodoo Chile (with Jack Casady on bass!), while Finnigan played on this cut.
This tune sort of indicated to me where Jimi was headed after all the heavy riffs and fusion stuff, if my memory serves me there is only 3 cats playing here Jimi, Buddy Miles od drums and much to my shame I've forgotten the keyboard genius!!
Agree, this is one of Jimi's masterpieces and I can still remember first time I heard it, as the sounds bounced from side to side, and grooved so very, very deeply.... fantastic!
I read that Jimi wrote, "Rainy Day..." in Miami as he was heading to the Miami Pop Festival in May 1968. It was pouring rain and the second day of the show was rained out(he played the first day also) Great groove he gets going, Jimi was the master...
Love Mitch, but I understand this was Buddy on drums and it had to be him. Great splice. I always felt disappointed with the fade out on Rainy Day. I'm guessing the point was to make 1983 a "dream" but in retrospect it messed up a great jam.
The Beastie's "Check Your Head" album has a song with the same groove, and I always wondered if they just couldn't get the rights to use the Hendrix sample. Too bad, because I would rather have heard the Hendrix sample than a re-creation.
That was a great idea to put them together I wish it was that way 40 years ago when i was young and still getting high but it is still great Thank You.
This song takes all time best rock song in my opinion. Just take note on how Hendrix himself is uterally "jazzed" by this tune. It's about time some one stepped up and spliced back together this obviously originally unspliced song. (I often thought that "you just can't have a musical compilation this good without serving it in portions!") Hendrix demonstrates his complete mastery of the guitar by what seems like elegant proof of actual channeling his guitar to speak. SO in the zone.
It's too bad Jimi didn't do more of this type of soul-jazz stuff, it's almost as if Jimi is jamming with Jimmy Smith! Jimi also played with jazz organist Larry Young, but the recordings that exist of this collaboration are fairly crude.
The video isn't my work -- the original uploader (whose username I failed to record) cancelled his/her youtube account. The audio is a fairly simple splice of two tracks from the Electric Ladyland album, but the video montage is a masterful complement to the Hendrix experience.
@MrJimmity Okay, I've been encountering this in a lot of classic rock comment sections recently, and it's starting to unnerve me. Why the HELL, in every one of these song types, does some nostalgic music fan have to mention Justin Bieber sucking? I get it, you don't like him because he's a tween idol. Why can't you just, YOU KNOW, ignore what he does and stick with your own brands of music? Some day he'll become as much of a relic as this stuff, and then he can't bother you anymore. Good Lord!

@aquamarine99911 I think the split up was more of the fault of jimi's label, in some attempt to shorten the song (s) for the radio.
