Green 100 mW pen laser lights a match

most greenys are dangerous because they miss an infra red filter,that is needed

to filter out the ir beam. ir is invisible you can't see it but it can ruin your eye's.

accidents occur most with the cheap green pointers because the have no ir filter.

I also bought a laser from a guy in a portuguease auction website.

He says it's 100 mw, and it was extremely cheap, only 25$, there should not be any problem looking at the beam and dot right? I mean not pointing at my eyes but pointing across the street or to the street from my building and looking at the dot?

Because I dont know if it hurts my eyes, the laser should be prepared for that right? That's why I bought it, to point at stuff...

Several things:

1) This laser was advertised as 100 mW, but is probably more like 50-75. But it was much less expensive than the better-quality ones.

2) It had old batteries. New AA lithium batteries do much better.

3) My fingers aren't very steady.

4) I didn't color the match head black, which would absorb more light.

I can get it down to a few seconds if I use fresh batteries and prop up the matchstick with something instead of holding it.

Yes, this is a DealExtreme laser.

Incidentally, I can get a match to light much more quickly than shown, but my fingers aren't very steady, and I didn't do anything special to the match like blacken it with a sharpie.

Still, it probably isn't a full 100 mW. But it was a good deal in any case.

How about Nova? Techlasers is just a big fat ripoff, and Wickedlasers reships their DOA lasers to new customers, who then have to live with underspec/DOA units or pay shipping back to WL and then $40 shipping back to you, plus handling fee. Just to get another underspec/DOA unit...

Novalasers are usually overspec, and all brand new. They have a great warranty, and are very well made. I did a LOT of research some time ago.

AFAIK they are regarded as the best quality lasers on the market. DL is pretty good too. Most people seem to get Nova pen lasers and large (>300mW) Dragonlasers.

Well, all lasers will lose a little power as the battery level goes down. Its inevitable. But the cheapest direct-driven (low lifetime) lasers do this much more. Nova lasers have great regulators, they really are about as good as it gets. Dont trust me though, this is YouTube! Do your own research... Google 'laserpointerforums'

I bought one of these too its only a 10mw with a powerfull diode but it wouldnt light matches so i tried to modify it and ended up bustin it. now ive ordered a proper 85mw from nove lasers. they also have a built in ir filter which saves your eyesight. this one in the vid does not have one so dont point it anywhere near your eyes.

A 100 mW should light matches in about 1 or 2 seconds.

It's entirely possible that it's not 100 mW, but this is not quite my best time :-). I can get it to light a match in a few seconds if I place the match in a stable holder instead of using my fingers.  Also, I didn't use a black marker on the match, which also helps a lot.

My laser from ebay emits full 100mw on average like it should and lets out hardly any ir, as it still has filter and was properly tested, so just because you hear about from other people all ebay lasers are bad does not mean it's true. Besides this laser is from dealextreme, and they even admit to them not having an ir filter, so do you really think people need you to tell them that?

There's no real trick to it. The most important thing is to hold the match and laser steady. I didn't do that very well here, which is why it took 20 seconds (I can do it in 5). You might try balancing the match on a bent paper clip.

Coloring the match black with a Sharpie marker also helps, but not totally necessary.
