Ian Dury told Malcolm McClaren that Johnny Rotten had stolen his act when they ---[ie the sneering attitude and manipulation of the mike stand]--- both watched the Pistols' live gig... ...immitation is a form of praise.
Raidens81166 is obviously the real lunatic here who doesen't understand the background and value of this song. I was 16 when it was realeased and I have always loved it even today when I have close to 30 complete sets of Wagner´s Nibelungen ring on CDs and DVDs/Blu-rays. Ian Dury was like Tom Waits able to combine beautiful tunes with progressive music. Where else do you see the saxo-player plays dual saxes? Fantastic!
I saw ian on his last tour when ill with cancer-one of the great gigs I went to.The band were awesome, and Ian was and remains a bona fide legend. I love this track.
Decades ago, saw Ian D and the B'heads when they came out to NZ. We were well up for it going into the 'arena' and whilst we knew about his history with polio, we were kinda stunned when he we saw he needed a minder to help him onstage. But after that it was f**ng magic. He was tne man , great songs, great band..
@yolatreacy I don't know who sampled THIS. but this exact groove ian d and the b heads took from a Dr. John song the early 70's "right place wrong time" (i think that was the title.) probably the groove was initiated by a. toussaint, the producer and groovemeister. some deep swampy louisiana creole voodoo groove.
@markmarktarmann I've just found Right Place, Wrong Time on YT and if it is the song you mean I can't hear anything that suggests Rhythm Stick was stolen from Dr John... Right Place, Wrong Song?
@ryoko65 ha ha, you think that is singing worth a darn? How much is a darn because his singing is bobbins... it's great mind you, but is it really good singing?
@jaymally23 I would never be so crazy to claim I have a clue... to which part specifically do you consider my cluelessness to be worthy of remark here? is the singing actually worth a darn? and seriously how much is a DARN worth these days? By his own admission he said he couldn't sing but that knew a lot of cockney rhyming slang... great fella, great music, darn good singing
@insideahorse -- very clever retort :) I set you up to deliver a great line......I guess I should have also said that the song is fun and his original performance is great... but you try singing with gum in your mouth sometime ..... lolz :)
Was it Chas Jankel who phoned his mum immediately after recording this and said, 'we've just made our first number one.' No wonder. A piece of absolute genius.
Genius - top fella, saw Mr Dury and his Blockheads at Finsbury park when they were backing Madness. Aswad were they too, but Ian Dury did the business.
Ian caught polio when he was a kid and so one of his legs and hands didn't develop properly. We don't see much polio these days coz of vaccines but there was a fair bit of it around in the 40s when Ian was born. Didn't seem to stop him though, did it! What an artist, sadly missed.
@SunnyJim33 absolutely..i always remember the song sex, and, drugs, and rock and roll..i just recently really started to listen to ian and the blockheads...man soooo good...
My band supported Ian dury and the blockheads in the 90's just before he died. It was a bit sad really as not many turned up. Now he's massive again. Even though he was on his way out his performance was exceptional - especially this track!!
all in an English accent he knew it would make him stand out and he did ,outstanding and very clever move maybe more people should try it instead of singing with a black accent or and American one.
