  • The "Gin and tonic trick" in this demo is badly demonstrated - on real hardware or an accurate emulator (newer bgb revisions) you see actual per-line scaling.

  • It's a shame systems become obsolete just when devs know how to get the most out of them

If only there were games that used effects like that!

  • Wow... Trippy.... :3

  • The GB CPU is 8 bit as I/O ports are 8bit.

However, the GBs 8bit registers can double as three 16bit regs, and these are used to address 16bits of memory.

The GB CPU CAN do 16bit ADD and SUB with carry arithmetic (although these are slower and essentially can be replaced with two 8bit Add + Carry ops) , but most other arithmetic is restricted to 8bit at a time.

Even an all-8bit CPU can be made to perform 32/64bit maths in software at any rate.

  • @_@.

That still makes me feel trippy!

  • The music, once again, is fantastic. I even recorded it on an emulator!

The effects are... (Has anyone seen my jaws?) jawdropping.

  • GBC is definitely 8 bits for calculations, but it has a 16 bit address bus so it has an address space of 64kb. The CPU is very similar to Zilog z80 which was used in many home computers in the 80's =)

  • Thanks for the information, and thanks for the video response also :D

  • We may call the GBC "8Bit", but this is proof that it is NOT 8Bit, as 8Bit cannot handle this kind of animation. This is why I believe it to be 16Bit.

  • Or maybe 12bit.

  • Well, 12 Bit for data transfer & Calcs, but not for graphs

  • @ApeEscaper493 Or maybe you just understand what 8bit even means ;)

  • @malducci - Just so you know, ApeEscaper has left YouTube so don't expect a response from him.

  • @ApeEscaper493 Uh no, it -is- an 8bit data bus. It's just, well, it has 8mhz of CPU cycles and extremely exploitable hardware.

  • I love demos like this. I wish there were more of them for Nintendo DS and the Wii (seen a couple of neat ones though).

  • amazing what that old handheld can do!

  • i didn't know the GBC was capable of handling 3d graphics after all its a 8-bit system

  • Simply amazing.

  • 1:58 is the only trick I could understand: they use the BKG for the plasma effect, and they shift the Window line by line to give the shape of the "cutout", check it out in BGB's VRAM viewer :)

  • 3D?! OMG I DID NOT KNOW THAT

  • Damn! So many games that could have been MUCH more awesome!

  • thats incredible, I didn't even know it could produce 3d images

  • There was a Japan only game for the GB called "X" that had StarFox like 3D polygons, but they never moved at THAT many fps!

  • Hm, didn't know X used polygons. Well, the GBC does have a faster processor, so that could account for the difference in FPS.

  • Wow, that demo looks really good. Oh, at the beginning, the name it puts in the user name is, Ultraman. Ultraman in fact, he's a Japanese superhero. I wonder why he wants to use that name? I guess because this demo has the ultra power. :P

  • If only the GBC port of Mortal Kombat 4 was like this.

  • The GBC - Based off the NES hardware, but with enhancements such as a FM Synthesis chip and a higher color pallet (also more colors displayable at once.)

And also apparently capable of all these advanced effects.

  • Only it uses a modified Z80 as a main CPU, not a 6502.

  • dang i never heard about this game til just now =D

  • It reminds me of the kind of stuff you see on pirated Amiga games!

They all had some fancy intro with this kind of effects saying who cracked the game! :3

  • I never knew there were pirated Amiga games D:

  • I didn't know they were pirated until I was older...

A friend at school sold me a bunch of pirated games. most of them had something reminiscent of this before the game started. Just look for "Amiga crack intro" on YouTube and you'll see what I'm talking about!

  • Silly Crash, everything has pirated things. It's the reason for China's existance.

  • 3d on GBC?! Awesome

  • Wow, pretty cool and awesome!

  • 1:51

Using that effect, I would know that it's possible to make Earthbound on the Gameboy Color/

  • Quite amazing

  • Pretty cool GBC can run all that.
