ill always love the wizard oz i have four kids and they love to watch the movie over and over again.. it will always be our favroite.. rip.... love the OZ's
i watched this movie with my son on tcm today and was curious to know if there were any survving members of the cast left as i thought there wouldnt be any especially seventy two years on
Lol im playing a munchkin in my school production the wiz. lol were all girls instead of little boys. we have to wear these huge luminous tutus and bright huge leg warmers and have are hair in high pigtails lol :P
Hard to believe that of all 124 actual munchkins that played in this movie that there are only three remaining alive--Karl Slover just passed away. Even harder to believe any of them are still alive. They weren't young children when the movie was made. I wonder who is left of the original 1939 cast. None of the principle characters are alive today.
Very touching...to see these special people...reunited after so many years. How wonderful that they are still sharing memories of such a special experience in their (then) young lives...how many lives have they touched with their performances??
this made me cry, especially the end when margret says "they're looking down on us" .. it is just so lovely and touching and really, those little wonderful people mark the end of an era.
1. This was in London. The Wizard of Oz is not well known in Britain, and the kids in that country were not familiar with it.
2. A lot of the actors were angry because they were paid less than they should've been. Somehow the studio got away with paying them on a scale meant for children.
3. There was a lot of prejudice against short people in those days, and they weren't treated with respect.
I wasn't aware that Meinhardt Raabe (the Coroner Munchkin) had passed away. I actually met him at the 2004 "Autumn At Oz" Festival in Beech Mtn, NC. He was wearing his blue munchkin costume from the movie and I got to have my picture taken with him.
I cried cuz after they were talking about how judy was all nice and sweet to everyone i just cried cuz in away she was a natural beauty and a very kind hearted girl RIP Dorothy,Scarecrow,Lion and Tinman u have left behind an amazing legacy we thank u 4 the work u have done may all of u rest in peice and again thank u :)
timeless movie without question. it's absolutely phenomenal this movie gets the recognition today as it does. timeless is the only thing i can think of. and it's incredible to see what the munchkins are up to at least 2 years ago.
@1more4carhur Did you know at the time it was a flop at the box office? It didnt gain recognition until decades later. Yeah, hard to believe isnt it? Check it out.
My uncle lived next door to Clarence Swensen; one of the munchkin soldiers. I met him when I was in elementary school. I'm a senior in high school now. He was taller than me at the time. I would do anything to go back in time and talk to him once more now that I'm older and have so much more respect for the masterpiece that is The Wizard of Oz. But it's too late. Rest in Peace Clarence.
Wow, as woman almost 57, living with life's challenge of AIDS. These "little people" who I remember SO well, is inspiring. This movie scared the stuffings out of me as a kid!
I just stumbled across this. And i am soo happy that i did. What a blessing all those people were. the memories that they have given to so many people doing this movie for one! This is part of our childhood. I know that many girls wanted to be the good witch or even Dorothy. I wanted to be a Munchkin. I thought they were sooo beautiful. inside and out. I really think that they made this movie what it was.. honestly... God Bless the Little People!
@TheRockjunk yup i wish judy was still here she did a wonderful job in the wizard of oz this will never get old long live the wizard of oz they dont make actors and actress like this anymore
had the honor of interviewing them plus two others, Mickey Carroll and Clarence Swenson. What a thrill. They are all sweet and made great interviews. I am blessed to have those chats on tape. Sadly Ruth's comment at the end was probably true, it may be the last time they are all together.
@ilasya99 I'm not sure. This video was posted over a year ago, and I'm not sure when the film date was. But it's definitely possible. I'm surprised they've lived this long to be honest. If you're really curious, you should Google their names =) Although I'm not entirely sure why it matters if they're dead or not... D: Anywho, if you're that interested, look it up. Their names are in the video.
It was so sad that they're only four now because Meinhardt Raabe died this, I think, March 2010. I don't want any other surviving cast members pass away! They're the only characters that are still surviving today.
I met the middle three at OZtober Fest in Wamego Kansas! The lollipop one (Jerry Maren) even performed during the Wizard of Oz play! He got on stage and sang the lollipop song with them. The most memorable OZtober Fest ever!
@SkyBlueHorse i wish people like would would also stfu just cause someone told you its fake dosent mean it is fake also just cause i read it was real dosent mean its real, theres enough evidence to prove it true and false
2:11... My very first favorite other than Dorothy. :) I remember when I was little, I knew all the words to "If I Only Had A Brain". lol That and "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". I still know most of them, but not all. lol
I actually met the one who was the solider. He was making appearances at a store at Myrtle Beach probablyt back in 2003-2004. He was really sweet and kind.
this film is so great it is loved by all generations, the songs are catchy, the music is happy, the dancing is fun and the story is interesting for all ages! I like watching the munchkins telling their stories, its sad that toto got paid more, they're people and he's a dog (i'm not dissing dogs, but seriously, what do dogs need money for?) its so cute watching them sing! at the start i thought the one on the left in blue was a lady!
its really sad are they all dead? is there anyone from the original cast still alive? RIP all of you, this film will be remembered and loved by all ages forever and always. Thank you
i didn't know that liza minelli was judy garland's, daughter, or that judy died from drug abuse, if not, she may have lived to the success of her career, especially this film, but because of the people that gave her the drugs for energy and 'to keep her looking thin' this will never be the case. the world has lost some great people. 5:17 haha! This is so cool! It's awesome to hear what memories they have of the experience, and it's so nice of them to share it with us... even if they can't stay awake during an interview haha :)

it's been pointed out that lollipop kid on the far right is the midget star of the 1932 film "freaks", you can tell from the eyes and cheeks.
