During the early 1960's, EMI signed up Gedda AND Wunderlich, and the younger Wunderlich did not stand much chance in the recording studio because of Gedda's presence. Later Fritz moved over to DGG and left a large legacy of wonderful recordings there.

We Chinese have a saying - if you already have Zhou Yu, why should there be Zhuge Liang? i.e., what a wonderful waste of talent to house two top men under one single roof!

DAMN what a performance of this beautiful leid, man He Jussi have the best recordings of this I have heard, none compare. Who is the BEST too difficult to pick, personal choice...BOTH FANTASTIC

The only possible competition for Jussi and Fritz. Arguably, this is better

sung and there is more intelligence behind the words. But Jussi had

an incomparably sympathetic timbre and Fritz also had by nature what

many couldn't accomplish by study. I guess these three have inhibited

some modern tenors-- I'd like to hear Ben Heppner and Jonas Kauffman

have a go at it.
