  • 私は犬が欲しいです。

  • Memories of a better time , soz current ppls :)

  • Introspective, an album that oozes amazing beats and mixes, these guys are legends !

  • This is not the original version. Actually that "hideous" version, which is not a very hideous one, is the original one and a B-side to Rent. This is Frankie Knuckles version and the Boys loved it very much that they couldn't help it but include in the Introspective (and this way they got rid of writing one more song in the process LOL:)

  • dude....LOVE this!! My goodness, I actually have the first release!! xo

  • I spun this song in the 80's at a roller rink in the 80's, I've spun it recently in 80's sets, this song is one of the greatest deep cuts of the 80s, totally classic.

  • @anakrony

If you can find the right version !

  • Even though I'm a cat person, doesn't stop me for having always loved this track!!

  • My friend made fun of me for listening to a song about dogs from the Pet Shop Boys .. not my friend anymore lol PSB<33

  • @emmaaa3451

    What about the cat ?

  • @roddy76to86 **and the cat.

  • @roddy76to86

    Ok.We will also get you a cat.Stay in touch.Alicia,Madrid.

  • @roddy76to86 Scratching up 'my' habitat as we 'speak' !

  • I remember when I first heard this version on the Introspective album back in November 1988. I thought that the intro of this song was so powerful and avantgarde.

  • Immense.

  • Pure genius, a fantastic song from a fantastic album performed by a fantastic duo, Gods !!

  • i used to hate this when i was little and now that im older i get it...and i love it

  • @roddy76to86 I love everything about this online exchange.

  • chris lowe.

  • A really powerful sound, love it

  • WWoowwww !!! Thanks for all the info GUYS !!!

  • this entire album is essential listening

  • This track is beyond brilliant..... its great to dance to

  • Qué bueno es el introspective! Qué buenos son los PSB, en general :-)

  • does anyone know who played the piano on this track, it makes me float around the room

  • @stevestudio54

    chris lowe

Lindo demais o disco .

  • roddy76to86 your wrong this is not the origional track so get checking my friend ..........

  • @tiffo197239

As you seem to know so much about this, why don't you state what the original track is ?

  • @roddy76to86 The original version is a B-side for the Rent single. It was later reworked and put on Introspective.

  • @BjossiAlfreds

Ok, thanks. But I've received so much bullshit about this track I've become very cynical. May I respectfully suggest if you make another comment about any track, you also include an explanation like you've just made

  • the piano solo from 03.06 is out of this world

  • @roddy76to86 hahaha

  • You don't have to be einstein to work out what this song's really about. And it's all the better for it.

  • @besty222

    The Theory Of Relativity ?

  • Sublime.

  • b side to rent wicked tune!!!

  • stop talking about dogs you people, this song is about a personal relationship...

I want a dog, a mate who'll do things "my way"

Ohhh... you can get a way...

  • @literati09

    Bollocks.

  • INTROSPECTIVE: one of the best album ever released!!!

  • Mickey Rourke has Chihuahuas

  • @johnmalory26

    Who's Mickey Rourke ?

  • @roddy76to86

American actor, Rourke starred in 9½ Weeks, The Pledge, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Sin City, The Wrestler, Iron Man 2, The Expendables, he won many awards you can Google him or see him on YouTube with his Chihuahuas.

  • @johnmalory26

I've never even heard of the films. I'm getting old... And I didn't recognise him from his pictures either, but the Chihuahuas looked great !

  • @pharao707 Big man/Big mouth/Big car/Big dog = SMALL COCK

  • Comment removed

  • That bass line oozes urban angst and loneliness... love it!

  • @roddy76to86 that's so true! the same is true for the size of his pick up truck...

  • @pharao707 a real man should get a real dog. ie one that is capable of killing him. michael vick is a real man.

joking aside, i find toy dogs pretty horrible - the neoteny is extreme and they would struggle to survive without people. a border collie does me fine.

agree with roddy about pedigrees having health problems.

  • haha Why some people need to find a sexual connotation for this song? All what they say is simple and true. Try to have one of those Great Danes in a small apartment, and then do the walks in winter just to let the dog dump his stuff anywhere but inside the house... I have a friend and she doesn't have one, but 5 chihuahuas! They are so easy to take care and so cute. Cats betray; they come to you only when they need something. Once they're pleased, you're scum to them... No! the curtains!

  • Great track from "Introspective". Why this production never became a major hit is beyond me. Mixed and co-produced by Frankie Knuckles - need I say more ?! Thanks for uploading.

  • I want a Beagle :) And I am going to have one next month. (:

  • the most coolest bass sound!

  • Beautiful Song!

  • Yes and its my all time favourite.,

    I want a dog ( bichon frise )

    cheers

    matt chadwick

  • I have owned a chihuahua and they are the best dogs....I also own a Silki Terrier like the one they have on their cover.

  • While I too "want a dog", I defintiely to not want a chihuaua... Yappy little runts annoy the hell outts me

  • This still sounds amazing. The Pet Shop Boys were always ahead of their times.

  • @albertkuna and still today...they create the best sound

  • lol

  • lp introspective....show de bola...anos 80......disco music, bons tempos que nao voltam nunca nunca nunca mais......

  • Goodness gracious, this song has nothing to do with partners or penis size. LMAO! Believe it or not, Neil and Chris have both stated explicitly that "I want a dog" is about...wanting a dog. One of their friends mentioned that he wanted a dog, particularly something small like a chihuahua because he lived in a small flat, and it inspired a song. The end.

  • @timothy0729 , I don't think he is talking about a choice between a male or female partner, he wants a partner who will do things "his way", a dog, submissive and obedient... the clue is on the last line of each stanza: "you can get away" and "a cat's no help with that"... who's he talking to? answer: The "You" is his partner, they're having a conversation. PSB forever

  • This is a pleasure to hear, since most of their well-known songs are overplayed over here in New Zealand. Overplayed on the radio and television.

  • dogs have nothing to do with penis sizes, I havent even got a dog but my willy is big enough....tossers LOL peace n love..............

  • Is my favorite song of the gods of electronic british music

  • Don't want a cat,

Scratching its claws all over my

    Habitat

Giving no love and getting fat

Oh, (oh oh) you can get lonely

And a cat's no help with that

    How true.

  • "Don't want a cat, scratching its claws all over my habitat".......quality Neil, oh and btw Uptowngirl this was not a clue to his sexuality (he does it in other songs), nice inference though. x

  • @roddy76to86

You're both right. Chihuahuas and other annoying yippers are for rich bitches; whilst dobermann, pitbulls etc. are for small-dicked blokes.

  • I've always liked most dogs I've encountered, but they take too much looking after; whereas a cat looks after itself...assuming you feed it of course !

But you're always better off getting a mongrel than a pedigree dog; they live longer and don't suffer so many health problems.

    Although I don't think you'd be able to find a mongrel Dobermann/Chihuahua !

  • @roddy76to86

I so agree with you about Mongrel's making the best dogs.

I remember reading abit about (and seeing something on the television) about how most purebred dogs come with alot of health problems, because of all the experimenting with coming up with different breeds of course.

  • sorry, I still want a Dog!

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, it's kind of unfair how they're always automatically pit against one another, particularly when there are dozens and dozens of other pet types out there you could compare them to. Case in point, I have two pet rats. They'd probably find it slightly insulting that this song doesn't even consider them. :p

  • I'm more of a cat person myself. In fact, I kind of wish somebody would do an "answer song" to this from the cat lover's perspective. Maybe I'll get round to it myself, one day...

  • @pharao707

He wants a chihuahua because he only has a small flat.

  • Dude, Chihuahuas rule!-I'm a girl

And I really want a dog so i just typed it in and i got this

  • Well, I hope you like the song !

  • i think it`s about his homosexuality.

  • Would you care to expand and explain that hypothesis for the rest of us ?

  • i think the dog he`s talking about is an imaginary boyfriend. I don`t actually believe that he`s talking about a dog-the animal..

the cat is ofcourse a woman he does not want to.

    I love the song, anyway.

  • Interesting, never thought of that. But I don't really agree, a lot of their lyrics were just plain daft !

But as you say, it's a great song.

  • that`s the way i see it.

    One of their greatest songs.

Chris is a maximaster in music arrangement. I just love his brain.

  • @777cata

no, it's about the lonlyness (when you stay alone) don't know very well english

  • Yes, that's possible.

  • Frankie Knuckles On The Production Here.

  • Brilliant brilliant. So tough and gentle!

  • Well done Roddy I've been searching for this song in this version for ages. Cheers

  • So had I ! Thanks.

  • a Chawawa, What a song i just love it soooooooooooo much. Thank You, Chris and Neil or You Thank Neil and Chris.LOL

  • chihuahua

  • sounds like chawawa but, Dont it?

  • Yes, but it's the breed of a very small dog which has the spelling of Chihuahua, despite how it's pronounced.

  • Oh god, I used to listen to this over and over again when I was 12 in the 80's.

Thank you, thank you roddy !!!

  • My pleasure ! It's good to be appreciated, because I had quite a bit of trouble locating this excellent version.

  • @roddy76to86 LOL it is not that hard it is in INTROSPECTIVE, third proper PSB album released in 1988. Thank you for bringing it here, though

  • Well thanks for the thanks, but this version of the song wasn't on the CD release of "Introspective", some other awful version was, hence the trouble in finding this. I ended up downloading it from HMV if I remember rightly, at the bottom of the list seperately on it's own. Poor thing.

  • Girls ????

  • Chihuahua :D

  • i want a dog too

  • Then get one !

  • my wife wants a dog

  • My wife is a dog.

  • what a lovely song :-)

I want to dedicated to my dog, Snow.

going to see PSB in July !!!

  • They're still on the go ?!

Just kidding, but they are getting on a bit. But then they've always put a lot of emphasis on the visual aspect of their shows, so it'll still be worth seeing. But maybe not for the price they'll be charging !

  • But Fehlfarben aren't far behind !

  • Well as I've explained before, this version of the song is much better and much rarer, because when the idiots put the album on CD, they put on some hideous other version instead. Hence all the views !

  • You have beat mathew now! congratulations

  • Wow ! I hadn't looked for ages, nearly 10,000 ! But there is a reason for that with this particular song. This version here I've uploaded was on the original vinyl release in the mid-80s, but when they re-released the CD version it was some shockingly awful remix of it. But I found the original on the downloads section of HMV, and I wanted to hear it again myself, so that was the main reason for getting it. Then I thought I'd better not be selfish, so I uploaded it onto YouTube !

  • You don't have to sound so happy about it...

  • It's not a competition !

  • Another weird phenomenom that was pointed out to me by a YouTube friend from Berlin, is that half my top 10 viewed clips are of German punk bands !

Check out Xmal Deutschland, they're great.

  • just makes me want to dance grrrreat

  • I love this song I NTROSPECTIVE is a great album, greetings from Peru.

  • And greetings from Scotland....(UK)!

  • Hey I have friends from Scotland here in Lima, great party people, and I worked with a Scottish girl years ago from Inverness, so I can say you people rock!

  • Wow, small world !!

I remember one not very nice English person saying "Those Scots B*stards get everywhere !"

  • Give all the whisky to the....jocks, or they´ll take over the world. (said in a tongue in cheek way ,ok)

  • Well it made me laugh, and I'm Scottish ! I presume you'd worked that out before writing that.

I've said many a time, I don't mind people taking the piss out of the Scots if it's in jest and not malicious.

Did you hear the one about the Scotsman who bent down to pick up a pound coin, and it hit him on the back of the head ?!

  • Naaah, I´m in Nicaragua, so euro-jokes are unknown here, I know about the jocks thing from an episode of pimp my ride UK. Greetings.

  • Hmm...I'm not sure whether to entirely believe that...

  • The truth mate, check my profile...and spanish is my native language. Saludos a Escocia y sus gaitas.

  • I have, and I wasn't implying any lack of truth of your origins, just perhaps your lack of knowledge of things European, especially Scottish.

And you missed out the Loch Ness Monster !

  • Aaaah, good ole Nessy, William Wallace (or was Mel Gibson bullshitting us?), The Jesus and Mary Chain and primal scream.

  • Well my suspicions were right then - The Jesus And Mary Chain !

"Braveheart" was a travesty of history, and Mel Gibson won the award for the worst Scottish accent ever, followed in 2nd place by "Scotty" of Star Trek.

Although of course William Wallace did exist, and was a brave Scottish patriot, most of the rest is made up.

The Battle Of Stirling Bridge - where's the bridge, the most important aspect of the battle I cried out at the VHS tape whilst watching it ? I've never watched it since.

  • Great tune!! I first listened to this when I bought the Introspective album. Frankie Knuckles is one of the best music producers around, and yes that piano solo is awesome!

  • great song!!!!!

  • this is all 909 drums with frankie knuckles

but the most important is who is on piano

which is Josh Milan the other half of Blaze

so i would prefer long version of this with no singing

  • thanx for info.

neil singing is not so bad though.

  • wow I had no idea Knuckles was on the production of this song? Awesome.

  • I do love this song... Even if my six cats don't.

  • What, do they not like synth music or something !

  • Haha, I think it's more the "I want a dog" and "Don't want a cat". They seem to not like that bit in particular.

  • Disco + Instrumental Jazz = FANTASTIC ! ! !

  • i really love the pet shop boys !

my mum let me hear them at first and now i just love them !

this and shopping are my to fav songs

i just love the lyrics :L

there new album is great to

I LOVE THE PET SHOP BOYS ! x

  • I dont prefer cats,we have a dog and its a newfoundland,VERY BIG ANIMALS!!!...i hate to admit it..but this is actually pretty good

  • Great track in album " Introspective " was in 1987 i have the Lp and Cd " one of the greatest albums ever .... really Pet Shop Boys " Popzz n' ROckzz !!

  • niel is so fucking hot!

  • iv got hte 12" and on cd im an old dog lol love the pet boys i bought there 1st lp/cd and still love em ( yes they are older than me. but they are a gr8 group. xx

  • by the way to all the young folk i do have a dog lol xxx but im not a bitch lol

  • I'm sure you're not !!

  • Have you got any hair left haha.

I've still got my hair but my teeth have fallen out. Yes, this middle age is a bastard. But at least we can get all nostalgic about the great music of our youth, which is something today's youngsters won't be able to do.

Old taped copies of the X-Factor in their attic when they reach middle age ?!

  • You're absolutely right! :)

  • Well I'm sorry guys but I just can't stand that other version.

This is the one with the beat !!

  • this the original one " Album Version " and it's the " Radio Main Edit. " when first released

  • thank you .i have this cd. xx.

  • O.M.G i have this on cd im really old.lol

    i love this song

  • has anybody got the version of one of a crowd??

  • I'm afraid I don't know that one. I only other version I know is utter dross.

  • Is this the album version (from Introspective)? I haven't listened to it in awhile but it sounds like it's probably that one. Actually, I like both versions (album and the 7" on the b-side of "Rent"). And I want a dog, too! :)

  • Well I actually downloaded this from HMV, as it was driving me mad trying to find this particular version. But going way back it must have originally been on the Introspective "album" (it was more like a cross between an album and an EP - if you're old enough to remember EPs !) because I used to play it on the cassette (and remember them ?!) in my car off it. But you can't trust all these CD re-releases now, they mess about with them so much.

Sorry, that's maybe not very helpful !

  • Yes, this is definitely the album version from Introspective. I still have it on cassette. Don't have my sony walkman to play it on anymore though. Lol. The piano solo in the middle is simply superb.

  • Thanks, it's nice to have confirmation, especially now that middle age is taking its toll !!

  • it's the original one from the album " Introspective "

  • This isn't that bad...

  • I'd better look out another one you might like then !!

  • this is the best version.

  • i love this song!!! at last i found it. marisa

    bs. as. pompeya

  • Yes, it's a hard one to find, which is why I posted it. There's another version that's on a lot of their anthologies that is just absolute rubbish !!

  • Seems to me,that this verrsion here is a remix by chicago house legend Frankie Knuckles. I personally prefer the other "rubbish" ;) version (the original studio take, produced by PSB themselves) rather than this one here.

  • hate cats

    love dogs

  • My most viewed video has 2,729 views......

  • Glad you put this version. Thanks.

  • My pleasure. The other version is terrible !!

  • I like this song!

  • Good ! I was very surprised it wasn't already on YouTube in full.
