Chances are you will also end up either loving it or hating it. =) I think the reasons people are divided on it are mostly that the movie is fairly dark and the ending is not something everyone can swallow. Also, the Frank character can seem like a pathetic failure of a special effect until the story unfolds a bit. ;)

Did Donnie actually time travel? Was he just a psychotic kid? Were all these coincidences actually happening? Were they only happening in his mind? Was anything really happening?

There have been points in history with people in similar experiences. Joan of Arc was burned at the stake for seeing visions... Jesus claimed to be the son of God...etc...and there are people in institutions that have claimed the same.

People have analyzed the fuck out of this movie. Just pay attention to the scenes Donnie has with the science teacher. The teacher explains how a worm hole appearing from nowhere is an act of God. Donnie mentions seeing the future where your destined path appears from spheres coming out of your chest, the teacher says if this were true then you could be given a choice to betray your destiny and it would no longer be pre-determined. To which Donnie says...

No the movie is not about whatever you want it to be. Nor is it about JUST about time travel. Donnie Darko is one of the most complicated movies that has ever been made. like @kilibot said, you can't understand it COMPLETELY in one sitting. I have seen it over 50 times, and I still discover new things when I watch it. What makes this movie so amazing is that you CANT simply explain it. You just reach a level of understanding over time.

The plane engine falling into Donnies room starts the tangent universe. There are two types of people who guide him in the tangent universe to save the primary universe, The manipulated dead and the Manipulated living. Donnie is choosen as the living reciver to save the PU. He must find the portals that take him 28 days back where the jet engine lands on him and when he dies the PU is saved., i hope this helps messge me if you have any more questions.
