  • what would you say is a good poundage for backyard target shooting? around 40 lbs?

  • one question: what do you use to mount the string? and what do you use as string? Beautiful bow!

  • awkward moment when he accidently shoots the camera

  • sweet bow man i would love to make one similar.

  • does 42lbs mean thats the size game it can take? or the line's test strength? Thanks

  • @99Sorc it is the strenth of the bow itself and the line

  • Nice bow! I hate them fiberglass arrows, there a joke!

  • where do u make your hand grip? right at the center? or the center is where the arrow shoots out?

  • RUNESCAPE

  • so what do you think can i make a bow out of pvc?

  • Nice bow :)

Try to loose some weight at the tips for your next one and it should shoot a lot faster for you. Will also help with some of that hand shock.

  • what kind of string is good for bow??? i didn't mean like excellent ones, but just normal and good.

  • use feathers in stead for fletching its better and dont throw ur arrows off

  • How do you know the draw weight?

  • @Immortal13100 hang whieghts of it till its full draw:)

  • @buffmann91 I like da way u think

  • what did you use for the string

  • sucks to be a guy like you livin in a city

  • sweet bow dude ive made a few longbows myself. i used to make slingshots but i smashed a window so i got banned

  • It sounds and looks a little weak : /

  • @derekanaya HA! yew bows are the strongest wood bows out there

  • tutorial?

  • Typical English weather.. lol

Greetings from Canada (born in essex!)

  • ohhh maaan! Nice shooting bow, but awful Tiller at the lower Limb. It looks a little bit like a holmegaard Tiller. You have a Bend 20-25cm beyond the grip- and the lower and a little bit the upper limb is to inflexible. Put the Bow on the Tiller stick, make a photo and put an Ellipse into it with paint. Use (google for it with google pictures) a Tiller tool - makes things more easier. Gibe the Bow (if the grip is not glued) a round Compass Tiller or an Flatbow tiller.

    Greetings from Germany

  • I'd prefer 50 lbs or above, if you're hunting.

  • Have you ever watched Taxi Driver?

  • You kill anything with it ?

  • @TrueOutdoorsMan16 IM sure he does, he looks like a mad man.

  • how do you make arrows

  • cool stuff, I'm going to practice making bows now, so I can hunt when the world goes to shit!

  • cat got your tounge?

  • @Robearwgl not sure what a "TOUNGE" is hahahahahahaha

  • @johnjayrambo11111 my bad, Tongue.

  • @Robearwgl failed spelling

  • @Robearwgl nice one, well made. bet your neighbours are a bit worried looking out the back window tho

  • I always watch your stuff when I get home for a few days. You've got some brill ideas and you aint afraid to put it into practice (and I'm not afraid to copy it!). I watch more of your survival stuff (and your kids' stuff) than anything on Youtube now. Keep it up. BazR

  • It's been two years now, how has the bow held up?

  • @cbdoobie stil got the beauty i,ll have to do recap vid one day

  • @johnjayrambo11111 luckily you can make your own i checked online and they were like 700 dollars

  • I like the yew bow..this is a great bow.

  • Awesome bow. I need to build something like this too :)

  • @7DeMoN7 i used PVC pipe 1/2 and it has the strenght to kill an animal, i acuilly have a video on it, just look on my acount its my only video!!

  • ahh the traditional british back garden, no room to swing a cat! know the feeling bud. nice bow btw

  • slik man slik

  • im envious, mine exploded before that point, how did u find a bit of yew that wasn't packed full of faults? a piece of trunk?

  • a yew stave like that should make more than only 42 lbs...

  • You are a true sherwoodforest merryman, greetings from sweden

  • @mrcriswellpredicts was robin hood lundre

  • youve got a good shot not to hit that camera haha

  • AWESOME MATE,GOOD JOB!

  • dude, this is inspiring stuff. u ever gone hunting with it?

+ do u know what its range is if you had more space

  • anyone know where to find yew for sale in california?

  • Nicely done. Personally i would have left it alot thicker to try and get it to at least a 60 lb bow but either way works. :) Also it seems like your arrows are kicking their ass end up when they start their flight. A good way to fix that is to put one of those metal beeds (i can never remember what they are called) on the string right above where your arrow nock fits onto the string.

  • ur a faggot

  • very nice bow!

  • now i know why it's short with a 42-lb draw: the live part of the wood takes up nearly one half of the thickness! i suppose you're goin to use more red wood and less white live wood for bows with 80-100 lb draw weight.

  • @macbolan00 most of the wood in a tree is dead; it is dead cells and it's only role is structural support and transporting of fluids.the red wood you are referring to is called the heartwood, and the wood you call the live part or the white wood is called the sapwood.

  • hi johnjayrambo1111, i've got a question. Where can i find a straight piece op taxus-yew. i have been searching alot and made all my bows of oak and hazel. but i want to try something new and yew look pretty cool. could you please help me out?!

    greetz from holland

  • I must say, this is pretty weird, I used to make bows when i was like 11...

  • @Plutoniummatt If all bowyers were 11 years old the world would be full of shitty bows. Really, i'd rather buy my bow from an adult. ;)

  • shoot something that is your height and a little farther away haha

  • i would have pissed myself laughing if u hit the camera

  • this video reminds me of what i am doing ! :)

  • nice bow, i like how you shoot as well.

  • the spine is to weak on the arrows, thest why they go up and fishtail, you need heaveyer bigger arrows for it to fly true

  • ducktape!

  • your longbow is verry short ?

  • @Kahur2007 was thinkin that to

  • Hey john!

Can you give me a comparasion between your yew bow and your similar strenght hazelbows!! are the any different characteristics of thoose woods,

Do you think that it's possible to make a hazelbow around 70lb without snapping

  • the arrow travels up a bit

  • Buy some more freakin' arrows mate!

  • rekycheky: 1.82 meters is more than enough. You can easily make a 55-60 lbs bow only 1.65 meters in length. Just make sure to get the sapwood off. It is only helpful when overdrawing the bow, it helps keep it together. Also, try and get a single growth ring on the back of the bow, or there will be splinters lifting and the bow could break. Check out paleoplanet (google it). Lots of info on making bows there. If you make an accound, add me as a friend (my nickname is JohnTheRipper). Cheers!

  • The English used longbows in the Hundred Years War with draw weights nearly four times as heavy as that one.

  • Cool. Good job.

Where I am, (British Columbia) 40 lbs. is the required minimum for hunting. You ought to get yourself some broadheads and come out here in dear season.

  • I wonder how long your bow is, cause I have got a yewlog which is almost without any knots, but it has only 1.84 metres in lenght.

  • Looks great. Seems to be fast for a 42 pounder.

  • hey man it shoots real nice but a tip is to get carbon or aluminum arrows it will help ur acurcy and the have more power than thouse little fiberglass arrows u got now.just a tip dont take it the rong way. nice bow 5 stars

  • Why he got a hat and coat stand outside?

  • ha ha its to hang my coat and hat on when i,m shooting lol

  • lol cool you all sorted then.

  • @m0eme Because the parm tree is taking up all the space in the hall ;-)

  • @tina6581 Haha ok I see now

  • i wan to make one do i need a arm gaurd and what string did u use

  • 2:25 bad aim?

  • You shoot a 42lb Homemade yew longbow.. see if u have nearly as good aim

  • yea man nice bow, i made one a few weeks ago, and i was firing it for the first time in some woods near my house, unfortunatly the police came down and decided it was a lethal weapon and took it off me, bastards

  • :o for real what happened?

  • @MrRich19 If your English it's still in the charter that all Men are required to practice archery lol

  • @MrRich19 they tooking from you? because where i live them wont!

  • @MrRich19 what the hell in Germany Bows are not listed in are weapon law they are completely free here.

  • @MrRich19 i hate police......

  • @Nasri589 yeah them fat asses ruin everything they even ruined my party. damn fattys ought to lay off the donuts

  • this is what we beat the french with the good old english long bow

  • whats the bowyers bible?

  • its a book about bows and mainly making your own bow

  • hold with the fatty tissue between your index finger and thumb. and be sure to have you elbow bent when shooting

  • excellent well done mate - i've just finished making my 2nd yew longbow 45 pounds @ 28" - i'm totally hooked thanks to the bowyers bible and my brother

  • beautiful bow but looks a bit uneven, not that i could make anything close to being better

  • yeah the top limb bends a little more than the bottom

  • nice bow :) does the string hit you hand after you realese the arrow ? it hit me when I do this

  • thats an awesome bow...and where was the camera where you were shooting at it the first part? it looked like you were going to hit it

  • u make the arrows or buy cuz the look pro?

  • good bow

  • why are you watching it then ?

  • @johnjayrambo11111 you never thought about making them and selling them?

  • @yorkiebateman101 then go have sex with your imaganary girl freand...haha

  • Nice looking bow, so where did you learn how to make bows?

  • thanks, from reading the traditional bowyers bibles

  • sweet. I just ordered that book! I can't wait to start reading it so many people seem to recommend it.

  • what string did you use??

  • i had a shop brought string on that one , but i sometimes use 3.2mm nylon cord

  • Nice longbow. I notice you use the Medieval Grip. I want to get into archery, so I've been doing my research about it.

  • Johnjay,

that's a fine bow, yew is a beautyfull wood isn't it? ;) don't worry about your drawweight, keep increasing it. Tiller looks pretty good, although I dont'know the unstrung profile. Taper seems correct, so tiller won't be too far off ;)

haven't seen the nock well, but it seems to be pretty big. Narrow, lightweight nocks will reduce the handshock and increase cast, 3/8" wide is a nice start.

well done, especially for your first bow!

    Nick

  • thank you very much nick , i appreciate your comment .

  • very nice video, but i do have a suggestion. don't use store bought arrows, they are incorrectly spined, and the accuracy really suffers. anyway you probably know this. 5/5 as always

  • It's an awesome bow, screw this guy.

  • Comment removed

  • why dont you just fuck off!!!!!

have you tryed to make one of these yourslef....? Go do it when you dont like other people doing it....and then put it you tube......

  • check out my bow making vids i hope they can help

  • thanks alot gunnywabbit , good luck on your bowmaking .

    malc.

  • Is the side that you hold against your hand the side that the bark was on? Is the side against your hand more rounded?

  • the side were the bark was is facing away from me and the bit against my hand is rounded

  • sweeeeeeeet

  • Very nice bow, but isn't 42lb a bit weak for a yew longbow? Still awesome though.

  • hey mate ,the ones you're talking about are the big warbows, which are for long distance really, this ones just for target shooting or if legal you could hunt medium game

  • it was his first bow. making a bow the first time and making it draw over 45 lbs is not really easy. if you screw up one single litle thing it could snap.

  • I realy like that Bow.!

  • thanks friend

  • how old is the bow now,how long did you season it,has it followed the string, can i see a pic unstrung, and a close up of the knots, looks graceful.

  • its about 1 & 1/2 years\ old ,i seasoned quickly at first near a fire like in the other vid then i left it for about 3 weeks it has got string follow i,ll see if i can make a vid with close ups, what do you think of the fake horn nocks its really a bit of wood glued on and painted black

  • i think they look good,i like yew bows very much,is this one made from a sapling?was it very knotty?

  • it was a sapling , it had a nice clear trunk all up one side and thats what i used so not many knots really

  • also it doesn,t look it but it is a little bit twisted

  • have u killed anything with it yet? wuts largest game uv got with one of ur bows?

  • hey mate sadly bow hunting is illegal in the uk but if i ever feel like breaking the law you'll be the first to know ,lol ha ha ha

  • lol wtf i didnt know that. that sucks. why is it illegal there? inhumane or something?

  • i,m not really sure mate i,ll have to see if i can find out, i,m definately gonna try it some day ,some how even ,if it means going to the u.s

  • ...not even legal there with a permit?? well we will leave the light on for yea

  • dude, even crossbow hunting is illegal. what i dont get is that you arent allowed to own an air rifle if you are under 18 in the uk. an 18 year old is more likely to try to kill someone than a 14-15 year old!

  • crossbow hunting usally is illegal, here its been that way forever, and just a while ago they made it legal, no i dont know shit about the uk lol obviously, here an 18 year old or anyone tries to kill some one they get beat badly,

  • Hey Malc,

Nice bow! Looks like a lot of fun!

    5/5
