Whitney may be a better performer than Mariah Carey, not a better singer. WH has a powerful voice, Mariah a much higher voice. Both have great techniques. Mariah Carey writes everything and basically makes music, on the other hand WH spent her entire life depending on others to write her musics. Both a great. I do prefer Mariah I think she is more complete.

MC has fright stage WH doesn't. WH does own the stage in a way that MC does not, but that does not mean she is a better singer. MC has also been considered the voice by the people in the music industry and WH was in that list too, but came third. And she has been twice. Differences apart is a matter of taste, however in terms of talent MC is way more talented than WH.

Mariah isn't even the second best singer of all time. Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin and many others are better than her. Mariah's voice is not interesting to me from a musical point of view - It doesn't do anything for me and has no soul. Great voices must have soul. Mariah has no soul.

@paulinolondon In fact usually when it says co-written or co-produced, what it really means is that the brains behind the writing and producing was not the singer. Co-written is just a way of giving some credit to the singer. I bet Mariah just said something like "I want to sing a love song about this topic etc" and her producer probably said "Ok Mariah, you just leave the actual writing to me and everything will be fine". Mariah: "Ok producer man, but can you give me some writing credits?"

He can sing brilliantly, play many instruments at a very high level, produce and compose innovative musical arrangements. Mariah co-wrote most of her songs and co produced some of them. In fact it was Whitney herself who insisted on doing the opening part of that song in acapella. Also Whitney did co-write one song - "Queen of the Night".
