How fast would you say those trains were going? MBTA Commuter Rail trains don't go any faster than 70 miles an hour, although I don't think those trains were quite doing 70.
It certainly is disgusting. There are many crossings at which trains aren't allowed to blow their horns. In Beverly, trains aren't allowed to blow their horns at ANY of the 17 crossings. It's because a lot of people who live there don't want to hear horns blowing all the time. If they don't like it, that's their problem. No one forced them to live near crossings.
Actually, at this particular crossing they do not blow their horns unless there is some excuse other than the actual crossing to do so. It something about the people who live around there not wanting to hear the horns blow. Out on the street that crosses the track here there are signs saying that this is a no horn crossing. Some people would rather see somebody killed by a train than to have to listen to a train horn. And that's the way it is at Brighton Street crossing in Belmont, MA.
The Fitchburg Line from Acton to Boston is a quiet zone and horns are not blown at the crossings. I was just stopped at the Waltham Station and the train did not blow it's horn. They are trying to get Boxboro added to the quiet zone, but I haven't heard anything on that since WBZ-TV in Boston ran a brief story on it in March.
they go 50 to 60 over those tracks

I'd guess that they were only doing 40 or 45 mph.

It's disgusting is what it is. Trains should always be allowed to blow their horns at crossings.

It was looking good last week. Purple trains and nice green trees and no rain. Everything rolling along nicely.

why didn't the 2nd train blow its horn?
hhp8 4 years ago
They don't have to blow the horn unless you are on the tracks. First engineer was just sounding a friendly hello and warning to not get too close.
