I think Van Halen ended creatively when Hagar left. In the past 17 years they have not released anything that can match this album or any previous album. Me Wise Magic was cool with Roth back on the greatest hits album but the latest album is nothing compared to the glory days. I think they should stop writing new material and just sing with what made them great. They might could pull one more album off, I personally would love to see what they could do with Hagar again.
Sammy is one of the Greatest Male vocalists of all time. The notes he can hit are insane. He consistently sings in his upper register. He is just as important as Orbison, Mercury, Plant, or any one of those guys. His technique is just flawless.
It really is a shame that Sammy was axed after this album... it really didn't make any sense at all... this album went platinum for them & what do they do get rid of Sammy over some lousy disagreement... They were on top of the world these guys they could do no wrong Sammy was still at the top of his game & they chucked it all away over ego shit...
Sammy is kickin in dis tune for sure but eddie is so awesome he cut the path for me and many other muscians like me. I remember my brother letting me hear this when i was a young 12 year old punk style bass/guitar player. this ablum and others along with the grunge and punk i already knew helped shape and make the way i compose my music today. awesome influences Thanks eddie and all of van halen. These guys are real rock heros.
@vmartin96 Atomic Punk is also one of their heaviest songs.
But in my books Don't Tell Me is the heaviest song. Van Halen is a hard-rock band, but that riff is quite close to metal. Especially when Eddie is playing that riff with his low-E string tuned down a half-step into D-note.
But these are all matter of opinions, I love all those songs you have mentioned and I sense that you are a hard-core Van halen fan just like me and it's nice to write somebody who appreciate a great band!
I'm sure you guys have seen this video, right? If not, its worth the time 'cause it makes the whole concept of this tune complete. Very powerful! Watch it!
wow....it sounds alright, but this sounds like he blew his voice on this song (sammy hagar doesnt sing NEARLY as well as he did in the 80s or early 90s)
"Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do" is my FAV track on "Balance". There's a lot of good stuff Van Halen did with Sammy Hagar from when he was in the band.
This song was the reason I asked for the "Balance" CD for Valentine's Day 1995, a month after VH released it. It's my personal FAV from the most personal album of Van Hagar's collection.
I have to listen to this album more to rate it, I always liked OU812 the best, but then again I think Hagar Rules as a Vocalist Guitarist, and a song writter.
Eddie's guitar tone in this tune is chilling. It's aggressive, yet has a pure, clean, wide-open sparkle that leaves every note perfectly audible. Of course that's a part of the Soldano-inspired voicing of his 5150. I was just thinking the other day about how Eddie's tone and playing changed through the years. I love the brown sound of the early days, but this is great too. Excellent song, too.
Agreed! The guitar tone is insane! What's with the album cover? What would you rather have instead? Lady Gaga on it, clad in a meat-dress? It's ok, I can live with the fact that those kids might be born as Siamese twins. Life's not perfect, but it beats CHOOSING to grow into a deprived adult wearing something meant to be put on the griller. It's more symbolic to show Life as it is, than to pose as self-professed vegan, anytime.
Never a Hagar fan before nor during VH. However, the fucker let it rip in this one. He really sang his ass off on this tract. Helped to save Balance as one fav of the Hagar era. Thanks for the upload!
Whoever called this a masterpiece was right, this is the best song VH put out, still raises the hackles on the back of my neck if I haven't listened to it for a week or so. ;]
@wryterzblock This is my second favorite VH song, my very favorite is DREAMS, and that is the best video in the history of music videos. i am an airplane nut, and the BLUE ANGELS are my favorite demo team on planet earth.
One VH song that is most under rated. Don't know why they didn't put on any greatest hits compilation. Can't stop loving you sucks and they put it on both of them.
@cards6709 Nah, won't get a lot of views because there's too much power in this song, ears and heads exploded before the end... only those worthy got counted.
This is Hagar and VH's magnum opus, the first time I heard it the hairs on the back of my neck stood straight up. If I wanted an instant adrenaline rush I put this in the cd player.
@zigzag024 we got 10 BITCHIN AWESOME YEARS from sammy. i will not complain about those years. eddie had a serious alcohol problem that even cost him his marriage to valerie. he is sober these days i think, but it would not be van halen with the original 3 eddie, alex and michael anthony. i would like to see them reunite, but the other 2 already have a gig.
Yeah, He did good in the beginning of the 2004 tour, then his drinking went out of control. If you saw him with his shirt off in the late 2004, Its shocking how frail and gaunt he was. It seemed there was no way he could commit to a summer tour that had been extended to the fall!
I agree Sammy was better, Dave had a lot of good songs though, but he always reminded me of a lounge singer. (and I am a DLR fan too, Yankee Rose is a great song, but Gigolo is awful.) Sammy is more of a straight-ahead rock singer!
(After this song, the last good VH songs are Humans Being and It's About Time, IMHO.)
BTW, Does anyone know where the name Chickenfoot came from?
(Maybe it was Sammy's derisive nickname for Eddie??)
have nothing against van halen but this is probably one of the only songs i like by them, and i am no where near a glory snatcher who just likes singles from bands lol
alright ive been sitting here for like 15 minutes now trying to think of what words i could use to describe how much i love this band. this works i guess
Thanks so much-I gave up looking for this song right before you posted it. Couldn't find it on limewire either. Then i thought for sure this was going to say audio disabled....blah, blah, blah. LOVE the Eddie's guitar in this! Crazy!

David Lee Roth - voice & charisma + ego
Sammy Hagar - voice & charisma, no ego included
