Agree with raydee. Today's so-called performers can't hold a candle or a mic to the bands/singers from the past. It all sounds the same with no feeling or depth. Hell it just plain sucks the big one. Even tho I'm a muscian and try to appreciate the music of today, I just can't see today's music ever becoming "golden oldies". Here today, gone tomorrow(I hope). Queen where are you when we need you?????
Nope....not carpal or ulnar nerve surgery. I know Keith's cousin's lawn man's pool boy and he said Keith punched the wall during a dispute with a girlfriend. Too bad, whatever it was it appears he has lost much dexterity in that right hand. It is good his meaningful works are saved (which were most all of his works.) No one better, long live the King Emerson.
Seeing some comments below about Keith's ability to play as fast and as accurately as he did in his prime but consider this;
Keith's chops are still still very impressive, yes he's not as sharp as used to be because of the medical issues, but, think of the legacy he's created. PAAE, Tarkus, Trilogy, BSS, and on and on. He's a great performer but his music will live on well beyond the dark day when he can perform no more. Let your kids hear ELP. I think they would still get it.
Keith had undergone Carpel Tunnel surgery on his wrists after years of playing unweighted anolog keyboards. It is a severe form of wrist-strain injury. It was almost the end of his playing career. Mercifully he is slowly recovering and gaining strength again, but his right hand seems to have adapted into a claw positio. I'm just thankful he can still play at all! I guess the likes of today's Simon Cowell-produced "artists" will not have to worry over such afflictions from miming too hard!
Keith's injury does not appear to be carpal tunnel- he is not really using the 4th and 5th fingers of his right hand, and that is related to the ulnar nerve. I recall reading in interviews that back in the 90's he had nerve transposition surgery up near the elbow, and that would definitely involve the ulnar nerve. Given that, it is quite amazing that he has been able to adapt his technique to work around this problem.
@Simona050 I didn't think it was Carpel Tunnel syndrome, but more like nerve damage from a motorbike accident. Not really sure. I don't think playing unweighted keyboards will hurt you that much. ;-)
@CleverDjembe Jeez. Honestly, guys. You think the human body can hold up to Emerson speed for decades? C'mon. We're still bound by the laws of physics in this universe. I'm amazed that Keith could play for as long as he could with the intensity that he did.
Why in the hell can't we get good music and musicians on TV over here in the states?! Last time I saw ELP on American TV was on Leno back in the mid 90's and before that it was Emerson on Letterman doing 'America' in the late 80's. I guess Kanye and Beyonce are just sooooo much better. Fuck this generation.
It's the hair. I don't think his face have changed. Anyway he doesn't look younger than in the 90s. The hairdo makes a huge difference, hope he keeps this one.
It's called "The Keith Emerson Band featuring Marc Bonilla", no more. published in Aug. 2008, it's the return of the glorious days of ELP. How could it be better?
It's tragic, really, even heroic. What's the worst thing that can happen to a keyboard virtuoso? Either losing a hand, particularly his stronger hand, or losing his hearing. He almost lost his stronger hand, that's the tragic part. The way he partially recovered in spite of the prognosis and finds a way around his disability and still sounds great is the heroic part. It's really inspiring.
Yes, it's a great pity. That right hand used to be lightning fast - try playing along with something like Howdown and you'll see how fast he used to be able to play. And in conjunction with his incredible left hand technique he was unbeatable.
The host is SO cute bopping in the background like a total fanboy. Love it.

HAR HAR. Good technique never leads to hand degeneration. Yes, I know Emerson had a medical condition, not necessarily bad tech.

The new album is amazing and worthy of "ELP". Check it out. It sounds like the album that should have followed Works (not Love Beach)
