  • Thanx so much for the upload. Only wish I had seen the group in concert...

  • Cass Elliott!

  • love this tune.... my fav live mama papa song

  • Most of the TV appearances were lip synced it was just the way they did TV back then.

This is one of few live performances.

  • "They basically taught [Michelle] how to sing on the fly."

Which worked out brilliantly, since her weaker "girly" voice provided such wonderful counterpoint to Cass's "earth mother" sound.

  • The great Eddie Hoh on drums

  • @recordguy4321 : "Fast Eddie Hoh", that is, as he's credited on The Monkees' great "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd." album!

  • love the hippie outfits ♥

  • Mama Cass is the real Voice here.

  • This is one of the groups that were better live than on tape or on record. They had a fantastic sound.

  • How truly wonderful, Terry Hall Blair And Anouchka were so influenced....beautiful!

  • Love Mama Cass' voice. One of the best voices ever.

  • @jscottlewis71: The irony is that Cass apparently spent months pestering John and Denny to let her in the group -- they thought her obesity would be bad for the young, sexy image they wanted. But then, of course, her voice ended up totally defining the group's sound, and it's impossible to imagine them without her!

  • I love them! They were awesome!!!!!

  • Love it!!!!!

  • STRIGHT SHOOTER !

  • Wonderful job droppin 'us right back.

Great job Crowley or the ghost.....smiles

    To all you others,

You have exquisite tastes, you never say dead folks.

    Not dead yet.

TEACH YOUR KIDS WHAT MUSIC IS.

  • I wish they hurry up and get my time machine fixed. I have front row tickets to this. Dinner with Michelle following.

  • That drummer is pretty darn good. The rest is the terrific talent of the Mama's and the Papa's.

  • Michelle is so fine

  • Cass could really harmonize!

  • Los amo mis hermosos ♥

  • I met a man last year in Vista, CA, and we talked for a few hours, who was the Mamas' drummer for their first tour, as well as in the studio. He worked with the Wrecking Crew, of course. I asked him a lot of questions, about Philips, Phil Spector, etc. Very educational for me.

  • @SeattleLA If I send you my e-mail, will you tell me about it?

I eat and drink the Mama's and Papa's.

  • who's the drummer?

  • 100% best live-performance of m&papas

Who played rythm guitar and drums?

  • @badedas75 The backup band was known as "The Group with No Name".

  • Wow, Michelle Phillips is beautiful.

  • @shanetrain71 too bad she's the only member of the band that is not dead. :(

  • @shanetrain71 In fact, they brought Michelle into the band strictly because of the way she looked. They basically taught her how to sing on the fly.

    Must be nice!

  • @shanetrain71 As is Cass... ♥

  • damn michelle phillips was one beautiful broad

  • It's a shame how you'll never find anything close to this on the radio nowadays. Other than that, A&W's your best bet.

  • Thankfully Cass was there to pull them together for their appearance at Monterey Pop - the others were lackluster for this event.

  • ask Mic Jagger he was best friends with J P

  • adolphine a synthetic heroin made by nazis

  • john phillips wa the leader and a drug adict,I don't name drugs but one was adolhine invented for hitler was a synthetic morphine

  • I wonder , why such a world famous vocal group with halve a dozen top ten hits then, played with such a weak backing band on such an event ???????Its not a question of rehearsel, when your guitar is out of tune.

  • this is the kind of band that even tho they were good allways they were way better live.......

  • Monterey?

  • I love this track...they were good live, this lot.

  • Whoever was a hippie around this time; Is a total Thrasshhhiiiinnn'

    Daammmnnn. i missed outt.

    >:(

  • pure live genius, fantastic ;D

  • It's a great performance, except for the fact that Michelle's microphone was disconected...

  • @ckleis

  • who is in the band? Blaine?

  • i dont like the song but the mamas nd papas were class

  • Mama's & the papa's are the shit (:

Straight Shooter: Straight forward, Never lies.

  • spooky

  • Who wouldn't have an affair with Denny ;D

  • i would definitely ;) ;) ;)

  • why is everyone giving me thumbs down on my comment? he is fuckin hot!!!

  • because of your name lol...sounds gay

  • hey bearing44: what rock did you crawl out from? Go back to your basement room and listen to your rap records; that's about all your dwarf-size brain can process.

Oh and try to learn the English language...

  • Jus read Mackenzies book. these people weresomestraight up junkies. smh shit is..they made some tight music for that period.lol

  • love it.

  • It's the Mamas and Papas not Papas and daughters!

  • I wonder how many people know what this song is referring to?

I remember the 'word' at several spots on the circuit in the mid-late sixties.

    Just wondering.

    JF

  • Eddie Hoh on drums was great on drums.

  • What a great voice, Mama Cass'!

  • had incestual drugged rape sex with his own daughter. and introduced her to herion, nice guy

  • hearsay is a destrcuctive thing.

  • hearsay? what he didnt give his daughter heroin? maybe the drug rapes are er word against yours but its proven he introduced his daughter to drugs, heroin infact

  • look, in a lot of ways Mamas and Papas were/are superior to The Beatles. Seriously...this shit came first.

It didn't surprise me to hear Mackenzie's secret. There were a couple weird photos already out there.

However, Mackenzie appeared on The Howard Stern show ten years ago and told the Mick Jagger story, but said then he took her virginity. The story changed.

  • McKenzie claimed that she was having sex with John when she was grown up. This does not change anything.

  • sage - I believe her. She is bizarrely sympathetic to him. In general, specifically for Mackenzie the Mick tale, which I also believe, addicts always fuck up specifics.

  • "superior to The Beatles" deluded dope

  • il bastardo si fotteva la figlia

  • John Philips's widow has come out and said it was not true. Mackenzie is a heroin addict and as Oprah says "who is going to call you up tomorrow and call you a liar" if this wasn't in the book it would be a flop. it's a pity this junkie is making up lies about her dead father just to make money. RIP John

  • like you know anything of what really goes on...

  • and you do???????

  • Cass was awesome!

  • So according to Mackenzie's new memoir, her father Papa John raped his daughter when she was 19 (she was passed out on drugs at the time) and they continued to have a sexual relationship for the next ten years. What a scumbag! I'm certainly glad he's dead.

  • I just read that too on msn about 10 minutes ago and I had to see that guy again to put a face to the claim. Woody Allen married his korean daughter and is still getting work in film.Hollywood is ridiculous because they allow people to get away with anything if they think you can make money or increase someones popularity.

  • Not saying Woody's situation is O.K., but at least it is not his natural daughter he is sleeping with. Papa John was 100% her blood father. That is so sick and wrong in so many ways. She also says Papa John was the first person to shoot her up on drugs. I fear that I will never hear this music with the same way again. It was once so innocent and loving, and now it's has become dark, ugly, and cold. Her real mother is another troubled soul. sad sad sad

  • He's a straight shooter alright; right up his daughter's ass, the fucking creep lmao

  • yessssssssssssssssssssssss

    sssssssssssssssssss

Love that American West Coast sound....from a big bloody Scotsman ha ha

  • @frankophille Cael a mara ha tu, Sibh Fein! Yes, us yanks did put out the word!

  • The Mamas and the Papas/ The Monterey international pop festival>>>

    a legendary performance...

  • Fun and happiness? It's a rockin'song but it's straight up about drugs, scoring drugs, shooting up and getting high, and not on weed either.

  • It's true.

  • fuck that!

  • That really is the "Group With No Name" backing them - check the MPF rosters - not to be confused with the 70s band Katey Sagal was in before she backed up Bett Midler and played Peg Bundy.

  • ooh its communism....communism has failed on every level....but here it is contaminating our youth ooh eek!

  • this little story may have saved my life, are they worried?

  • damnn i dont know why you guys would prefer ths studio version over this...they are both sick.

    i love this

  • zinkhan ga. shooter was a real straight shooter.

  • guess after over 7 million views ,,, someone decided to take the california dreaming video (from monterey) off of you tube.. what a shame!!!!-- I hate copywrite laws-------

  • actually, the CALIFORNIA DREAMIN video is still on Youtube.

  • thanks for that info yru,, the clip I was talking about was the original studio version that someone brillantly over dubbed to the video.(years ago)... I was at monterey in 67 and their live performance just were not that sharp,, they had all kinds of problems with the back-up band and dead mics etc... but the live version is better than nothing ------

  • Love those lines at the end:

"Baby whatcha holdin Half of that belongs to me"

  • FYI: This is the song (the sheet music, anyway) that was on the baby grand at Sharon Tate's the when the murders took place. RIP

  • woah! really?

  • what a great song! so much fun!

  • Great video...this is amazing! Such fun and happiness feel in this song. mamas and papas are amazing.

  • Ah, the days when maracas fit the music!

  • yeh, what a brilliant voice cass had ;D, u can tell if u listen thro headphones how much it really stands out ;)

  • The reason they are so befuddled at the begining is that they closed the whole three day festival AFTER FOLLOWING HENDRIX!!!! After what Hendrix did to that stage, it's amazing that anything worked! As you can see, mics aren't working and the band's momentum is lost after running out onstage to make their big enterance. They got through it, and Cass was really funny that night!

  • I always though Hendrix did close the show out. I remember in the Hendrix movie Pete Tonwsend said there was a bit of a dispute as to who was going to play last and Hendrix got up on a chair and played some amzing jams and when he ended there was no longer a dispute.

  • That did happen, but it was just an argument over who was going to follow who, not who was actually going to close the festival. The third day/night went as follows: Sunday Afternoon: Ravi Shankar; Sunday Evening/Night: The Blues Project, Janis Joplin (a repeat performance), Group With No Name (band that backed Mamas and Papas), Buffalo Springfield, The Who, The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, and The Mamas and The Papas. Jerry Garcia said it was so wierd being between The Who and Hendrix!

  • Cool! Thanks Matthatter!

  • Matthatter, now THAT is some interesting info! Even though I'm slightly younger I too saw Mamas&Papas live in Zurich Switzerland in '92.

  • Not to mention that John and Michelle were busy helping set up the festival (along with producer Lou Adler), that they did not have time to rehearse before the show. Plus they were the closing act and had no chance to try and top what the Who and Hendrix did earlier. Not a bad performance, though

  • eeeeeeeeeeeeeek fantastic ;D

  • One of the best band of all time ! Great music ! Thank you for post this for us ...

  • I just discovered this song... love it!

  • Michelle Phillips linda , linda

  • I like the drummer, as a person, but he can't keep the beat......

  • what do you expect he's probably full of it like the rest of them and everyone else there.

  • They're great and everything, but I really like that drummer-- whoever he is!

  • Cass blows them all away

  • Totally.

  • is that Hal Blaine on drums??

  • no its Eddie somebody

  • That's "Fast" Eddie Hoh on drums.

  • They wasn't ready 100% to perform this song, because in the "gathering of flowers" Cass said "In Our concerts people heard exacetely what they heard on the records, and I mean that's the long hours work to do that"...

And I Know That was Michelle's Mic doesn't work in her part in "Somebody Groovy" at monterey. But The Mamas And The Papas It's Our Way Of Music!!!

  • a Michelle eh mtoo seria!

mas eh mtoo bonita e tem uma voz talentosa!

  • .. I still dig Denny's robe though ..

  • I love the M&Ps, and think they are amazing. But, this video isn't up to their usual standard. The guys are flat (so is Cass in some parts)on so much of this, and Michelle is non-existent. Instead of the gorgeous harmonies one expects from them, it ends up almost as a two-part duet, with Cass dominating. Shockingly bad for such incredible singers.

  • vaman,,, the mama and the papas were basicly a studio band,, where they could stack voices and harmonies on top of each track... in fact, they actually did very few live performances because of this... the monterey cocert was really a total disaster for them with all kinds of technical problems, dead mics,, the worse bass player back-up in history of music.. I saw them live at the hollywood bowl and they were better but still nothing like their albums which were brilliantly produced by lou adler

  • courtcol in your statement this is what i have been hearing for years. but i think you can hear the mama papa's magic in this song. only these four people have the mama's and papa's sound which is gone forever. ( the backing band not to good. )

  • thats correct ,John prided himself on how many vocal harmony parts they stacked, so there is no way they could sound "live" like their studio recordings, impossible..

  • That was more the mixer's fault. Cass always dominated. Listen to any of their songs, it's not difficult to pick her out.

    How I loved her!

  • Well, as I said, I loved the M&Ps too...Cass, in particular. My comment was that this cut was NOT up to their standards. Aside from the lousy mixing job, they were singing flat a lot of the time; that could be due to faulty monitor feedback, too. Regardless of this one "bad" performance, they left a brilliant legacy of music.

  • Actually im more of a beatles fan the name was sort of a joke. Although Bowie has some great stuff.

  • was this from the monterey pop festival?

  • yea,, this one is from monterey pop in 1967.. I was there,, but a long way from there now being a resident of Georgia...what a great time to be a teenager.... the mama and papas brought an unbelievable talent to the pop music scene of the time and even though they did not last but a few years.. they are still the best,, with their talented song writing and harmonies......ground control must be a david bowie fan !!!!

  • they were awesome!

  • Their best song!

  • Baby are you holding? - Do you have drugs?-

I'm a real straight shooter. - Intraveinious use of drugs.

I been searching all night just to find what i'm looking for? In need of Drugs.

Just get me high. Oh let me think for a while on this one.

Baby What you are holding, half of that belongs to me. A reminder that they are partners in crime.

(Song lyrics of drug heads were hid in plain sight.)

  • wow i cant believe u figured that out on you own. prettysoon u are going to try and tell me that jimi hendrix and janis joplin used drugs. or that many people took them during the summer of love

  • It was the 60's, most everyone did drugs.

  • I've already watched this video 4 times and just can't get enough.

    excellent stuff

  • EXCELLENT! Thanks for posting this! I love this band! RIP Mama Cass
