  • What is the name of this song? Does anyone know? The guitar is amazing.

  • You could have removed the rod as soon as the reaction went off. It will save your rod from any stuck Iron Sulfate and there's no need for it. Great video nonetheless, I have both and will be doing this soon lol.

  • Jesse Cook?

  • Is that firework?

  • that was pretty cool

  • This would be perfect for the next science fair volcano!

  • good music!

  • is this FeS or FeS2?

  • @ChaoticOrder73 I'm pretty sure iron sulfide is FeS.

  • @Halo3ForumEurope

Not all the time, it all depends which Fe you have. You can have Fe(II), Fe (III) or Fe (IV), which are the common oxides of Fe. FeS would be Fe(II) sulfide while Fe2S3 would be Fe(III) sulfide and FeS2 Fe(IV) sulfide respectively. This coincides with the charge given by the excess of protons over electrons in the iron (II, III, IV).

  • @Ravtank1

Sorry proper nomenclature, would be Iron (II) sulfide along with the others in this form.

  • @Ravtank1 I realise this, but he asked about this specific reaction. They seem like normal iron filings to me, so I think it's a fair assumption that what's contained in the beaker is in the normal oxidation state for elemental iron. (II)

  • 5 iron pieces disliked this video...

  • ...but will it blend?

  • @MrGulleMulle thats getting old i see it everywhere now no offence

  • @webkinzfaithluver that's the point ;p

  • @MrGulleMulle I used to blend things until I took an arrow to the knee...

  • @TheJordanBukikosa yea but i used to take an arrow to the knee before i blended it...

  • @TheJordanBukikosa That ist funny anymore, nor has it ever been.

  • @ColossusOfRhodes1 I'm not here to entertain you. :p I was just entertaining myself. I, apparently, have different taste in humor. Which is to be expected, as we are obviously not the same person. So, yes, anyways, yes. No need for such nonsense.

  • @TheJordanBukikosa Ok...

Anyway maybe it is a bit funny....

  • sulfur make reaction slow.....so don't put sulfur and use iron is better ^^

  • we know, it burns

  • @misieuroo it doesn't burn the iron reacts with the sulphur

  • Mii science sir should dix video to usss :D

  • @MubaImran I'm wondering what video your English Sir is going to have to show you.

  • i think we did this in school xxx

  • does it contain FeCl3 ?

  • @bas12345654321 no, Fe+S>FeS no chlorine involved

  • ur method is good our class did it in class we heated it with a crucible and nearly killed the whole class

  • this really helped me with my homework, but i'm tryinna find out what the reactants are? would they be iron and sulphur, or iron, sulpur and oxygen? cause theres oxygen in the air and i thought it might have something to do with it???

  • Great video, what a cool looking reaction! I was wondering, what was that liquid residue left behind? Is it a by-product of the reaction or does it come from the impurities from the chemicals?

  • Awesome dude

  • i really like the guitar.

  • That was epic. What I don't understand is where does sulfer come from?

  • Thats how earth will go under in 2112 :)

  • What's the song playing in the background?

  • The music stinks more than the products of this reaction.

  • I BELIEVE THIS IS HOW THE U.S.A GOVERNMENT DID TO THE TWIN TOWERS ,SULFURIC ACID ,READ SODOM AND GOMORRAH ,THIS IS WHERE THEY GOT THE IDEA !IT BURNS RIGHT THRU IRON AND LEAVES NO RESIDUE ,EXCEPT WHITE POWDER WHICH TURNS TO DUST IF TOUCHED AND BURNS FOR DAYS ,LIKE THE BEAMS IN THE TOWERS .

  • @ghost27rsr Sulphuric acid would be very ineffective, as it melts extremely slowly through steel.

  • so

  • @rambo6267 that's exactly what I was thinking! lol

  • Whatever you do, DON'T try this on your mother's favorite table! o.O

  • how would this react when used as fuel for fbp? what do you think

  • why would someone should their counter

  • A simple experiment but done in a very interesting and easy to understand manner

  • can u give me the mixing ratio??

  • i guess you can also make this on minecraft,

    sulfur

    iron

    fire source

  • Cool song

  • awful music selection mate

  • wtf no phoenix? im pissed lol

  • good aplication in welding! I like it!

  • you fucked that table up forever lol

  • Did you have a hard time cleaning up afterwards?

  • that reaction was cool.. but that guitar playing was omg awesome!

  • World Of Warcraft: Cataclysm....

  • Science, its what I eat!

  • looks like lava

  • volcano's vagina?

  • does anyone know this song and the group or persion it play it i like it very much please

  • where did u get sulfer from?

  • lol this is boring when ure a expiranced experimental chemist :P

  • @MrTimothytim I'm sure an "experienced experimental chemist" can spell experienced right.

  • That is used for fat firecracker fuses. (the red or yelow ones)

  • i did this, it smells pretty bad.

  • Thumbs up when you listen to the song it reminds you of Gerudo Valley in The Legend of Zelda.

  • Dude tell us about the music in the video please.

  • @yabadabadoo7 İ think it is Gipsy kings but dont know name of song

  • what happens if you use iron oxide instead of iron?

  • @TheChemlife imho nothing. s and o are in the same group and o has a higher electronegativity then s - you can mix s and fe2o3 up but you wont get an exothermic reaction... if you heat the mixture up you may get some so2 and fes.

  • I havent really understood these reactions of sulfur with other reducting agents, like ammonia, and even alluminium! Sulfur halide is quite a strong reducting agent and even redces water at room temp!

  • Comment removed

  • :O is the table ok??

  • if they did this in school it would be alot more fun

  • @mycatlikespudding69 thts the problem with "chalk-chemistry" - boring and most people dont understand shit because they have nothing to see, smell and touch.

  • @alder321 In our school its allways on the blackboard. :( I hate my school

  • nice video man

  • that must smell god awful. And i think thats what happens to your brain on drugs... Stay away from them :3 lol

  • Could you make me some Crystal Methamphetamine?

  • @Mad1093 Do idiots like you have to post this crud on every chemistry video?

  • what was the thing stick that you used to light it called?

  • @Hayden1911 glass stirring rod

  • i love the song

  • WHATS THE SONG?!?!?!

  • where did u download this song

  • Looks almost like a thermite reaction but less energetic.

  • I hope you were wearing a mask through this whole ordeal.

  • Do something great with Fluorine!

  • does it form fool's gold( FeS2 )?

  • what is that little yellow side flame on your guy's bunsen burner

  • @spotlightman1234 old bunsen burners have that small flame -quite convenient, like a lighter

  • @ChemToddler does that emit toxic fumes?

  • whats the name of the song and artist?

  • kool

  • Wow, wonderful music! :D Please, can you tell me what's it?

  • its just taking iron fillings and sulphur, mix it up and burn it right? cuz i wanna try that and izzit supposed 2 stink? cos panzuman said itll stink if u add acid and you said itll smell like rotten eggs so that would be awesome.

  • hello i was wondering if you can take that finished product let it cool crushit up add an acid and make it into a stink bomb? you know because of the hydrogen sulfide that is formed

  • @panzuman yes, but it would smell like rotten eggs, so why bother?

  • @ChemToddler something fun to do in the chem lab on "accident" lol but yes the commercial ones are far to expencive so i will make my own :)

  • @ChemToddler i know it is a tad sophmoric but you have to have fun in life or where will the fun in living be

  • @ChemToddler also hydrogen sulfide is very toxic and if one inhales large amounts it will be fatal

  • @ChemToddler Isn't that the point behind a stink bomb?

  • @panzuman

Hydrogen sulfide is also poisonous in high concentrations

  • @MistakenIllusion true but i wont do a large reaction just enough to make the odor

  • @panzuman lol you'd also kill the people in the building if they got close

  • @panzuman well hydrogen sulfide is very, very deadly, so thats a bad idea

  • @panzuman hydrogen sulfide is more toxic than cyanyde

  • @theman2160 um no it really isnt.....

  • You need to dissolve in a strong acid, such as HCl; it will produce a nasty stink. Be aware that H2S is TOXIC.

An easier way to make small amounts of H2S is to use aluminum rather than iron. The aluminum sulfide product will slowly decompose in air to produce smelly H2S, but the rate is so low that you cant easily find the source. One or two small pieces could be placed in someone's room (looks like a chunk of dirt) as a mean prank, and they'll never find it.

  • @panzuman hydrogen sulfide is really toxic. its comparable to hydrogen cyanide. it bonds to the iron in hemoglobin so that you can't move oxygen around your body. I wouldn't mess with it.

  • wow looks like lava

  • if you have an oxidiser such as potassium nitrate use the following: 5% potassiumn nitrate, 3% iron powder, 2% suldur powdered mix carfully and you can gat a violent reation

  • another table wasted...lol.

  • Music isnt my style, but Quality is Amazing!! What kind of camera did you use for this??

  • @Egondv Panasonic Ag-hmc72en i think

  • Was that bunsen burner from Lavoisier's personal lab back in the 18th century?

  • iron sulfide ftw

  • Vulcano =D

  • epic old-skool antique bunsen-burner.

  • did this in science todaii then we made fireworks- WICKED AWSOME lol

  • you spelt sulpher rong

  • @roblox296 1. You spelt sulphur wrong.

    2. Go to wikipedia, you can spell it as sulphur or sulfur.

    3. You spelt rong wrong.

  • you spelt "wrong" wrong

  • haha thats funny

  • @Vortex93 You SPELLED "spelled" wrong.

  • Spelled and Spelt are both accepted depending on where you live and how big (small) your penis is.

  • Sorry but you're wrong, Egondv. Only one spelling is accepted and that is "spelled" not "spelt".

  • well whatever I only use "spelled" anyway, but when people say (or write) "spelt", you know what they mean.

  • and people seem to disagree on this depending on where they live. English people claim spelt is the only right way "spelt

    v.

A past tense and a past participle of spell".

    its all AntFucking anyway

  • and so did you !

  • cool but the song is awesome ha ha

  • way more exiting than my chem class

  • XD you just make an instant pyrite! XD

  • you really fucked up your working table there

  • Homework: Done!

    Thanx!

  • I have a similar glass stirring rod, about 4 mm in diameter. Just waving it in the flame several times gets it hot enough to initiate the reaction?

Or should I stick in the flame for a certain period of time instead of waving it?

  • what good is iron sulfide?

  • Demonstrates how chemical reactions change physical properties (before the reaction you could separate the iron using a magnet, now you can't).

Further, it's a redox reaction. Also, if you drip acid on the iron sulfide, you make hydrogen sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs, demonstrating a standard double replacement reaction.

  • Lol, we did that reaction which produces H2S. It didn't smell like rotten eggs, more like hard-boiled eggs lol. Really =)

  • none that i know of, at least not this "kind" (fools gold is technecly iron sulfide, but its arranged differently

  • i have that mineral here on my tabel :D we have make it friday in school

  • Iron can form sulfides or disulfides at the second oxidation state.

  • this helped me with my science homework

    thanks!

  • THAT LOOKS AWSOME

  • you ruined that table!

  • its a hot plate

  • @Rhoso7 yeah you must've paid for it....

  • @Rhoso7

  • @Rhoso7 poor table ;((((( :D

  • looks like a volcano. nice music but doesnt match.

  • I agree, but as we are preparing a DVD material, we are following the reaction of subscribers, so the next set of demonstration will most probably be without music :-) Good comment though!

  • Muito massa esse video !

  • everyone's a critic

  • That was no molar mixture...Bad.

  • nice, now just add a little bit of hydrochloric acid xD

  • that'll make a toxic, smelly gas (hydrogen sulfide), i heard it is what gives a fart its smell

  • were the hydrogen come from ?

  • from the hcl in the reaction : FeS + 2HCl ==> FeCl2 + H2S

  • awesome ^^

  • thats hot

  • this stuff smells like rotten eggs ;)

  • Awesome now make some thermite :D

  • better yet Thermate!

  • Isn't that illegal :o since its used in grenades?

  • It is the same exact thing except it is added sulfur thus it can burn at higher temperatures with out depending heavily on oxygen.

  • Oh, and it is legal obviously with a license and its also used in grenades as an incendiary explosive. Though the powder in the grenade is thermate it would be amazing if they use thermate in the Braniac series. Bottom line Thermate is stronger than Thermite.

  • It looks like lava...

  • Without oxygen, I think this reaction has no flame

  • nothing can have a flame without the presence oxygen

    merry christmas

  • Well duh.

  • Looked this up just to check if the chemical reaction really happens. Found myself enjoying the music quite a bit :P Who's the artist and what's the song?

  • how'd they get the slow reaction?

  • that's just how the reaction is.

  • Aw, he ruined his table top. It's all burnt.

  • Now, add some acid to that and you'll get some tasty H2S. Yummy....

  • that was awsome xD

  • cheers

    need this for gcse coursework

  • try sulphur and condys crystals the reaction is much more violent

    and smoky

  • Thanks, I'll be using this. And nice music.
