It took the 1918 Representation of the Peoples Act for all men to get the vote in the UK. You had to be a property owner to vote before this. This means that most of the guys in WW1 trenches didn't have a vote. Btw Suffragettes suspended their activities during that war to give out white feathers to males as well as printing pro war literature.
My history teacher is a feminist (nothing against them) but *argh!* every single lesson we have to sit and lesson to a talk about it! I'm all for equal rights, don't get me wrong. Our teacher is so biased that it's not funny!
I bet that in the exam I shall be humming this song to myself.
It sounds like your teacher is being payed to teach history and is peddling feminist agitprop instead with nobody to put an alternative point of view I'll bet!
Maybe she takes after this woman! "If the classroom situation is very heteropatriarchal -- a large beginning class of 50 to 60 students, say, with few feminist students -- I am likely to define my task as largely one of recruitment ... of persuading students that women are oppressed" -- Professor Joyce Trebilcot of Washington University, as quoted in Who Stole Feminism: How Women Have Betrayed Women.
You should read "Full Frontal Feminism" it pretty much clears up all the stereotypes about feminism and it gives you a quick history. Its also got a lot of extravagent swearing and intresting commnets which make it intresting. The thing with femininsm is that you don't have to agree with all the traits; you can just agree with some values and say that you don't really like other stuff. Part of feminism is keeping open-minded! Woot!
I actually feel sorry for the Suffragettes/suffragists because for two days in a row I have heard girls saying: "I'm going to become a house wife, why should I get a job?" These women did so much and some people just don't realise.
Yes! This song sort of depresses me because they say "and our daughters daughters will adore us" . . . But they don't! People don't even know who Nellie Mclung is!! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PEOPLE! :)
Dare I be honest? I didn't, until I searched. Since we're British we don't do much American/Canadian history... Actually none at all. We don't learn about the Suffragettes/gists unless we choose to do History, personally I think it should be taught earlier, it's something everybody needs to know.
The thing with Mclung is that she was the first person to suggest womens suffrage to the western world, and I believe that Britain is in the western world. Ummm heres a british (Actually french) feminist . . . look up Christine de Pizan, she rocks my world and she started in the 14th century. yes!
