Man that is my childhood right there! I figured out long ago how to play the main fanfare on my electric. I was jammin with some friends one time and hit it at the end of a song and they all fell out laughing at the awesomness. I def thing the apogee logo and fanfare need to be brought back. It is culturally significant in the computer game world!
i have and play all these games still. even the first ones like paga and word resque. LONG LIVE APOGEE. my hart forever lies with u guys. ty for the years of games i love so much.
When I think of the early 90's when I was growing up and the very fist (and best) PC games I played, the first company that comes to mind is Apogee. So many good memories here.
1:07 - "You boys just don't geddit, do yuh?" Classic. XD
Ah, I get all choked-up with nostalgia every time I hear that classic Apogee fanfare... It means a lot to someone like me who grew up with their classic games.
I remember having a lot of these games as a kid until I had to get rid of my DOS computer because of moving many years later. Good thing there is DosBox to allow people to relive the memories and maybe even make videos! :D
Man, Sound Blaster really kicks. The MIDI technology on today's operating systems sounds really weird. It's a good thing DOS box can mimic the Sound Blaster.
@HumanDaikon Actually the Ultrasound beat the crap out of the sound blasters back then, especially on the midi side (Sound blasters only had FM music up until the Sound Blaster 16, The Sound Blaster AWE 32 was the first to have MIDI synthesis). Problem is it didn't have hardware soundblaster compatibility which was a huge mistake from Gravis since Creative had the monopoly back then. It was amazing though, when you played games which directly supported the Ultrasound.
Raptor, Duke Nukems, Monster Bash, Crystal Caves, Commander Keen... Just amazing... The old Apogee might be gone, but the new one is here... Back in action.
I forget which apogee game I was playing as a kid when this happened, but normally there would be the typical apogee intro, but one time it was a bunch of Mexicans singing it. I was like what the hell!? Does anyone have a recording of that?
Yes, it's true. It works in Raptor on some of the developers' birthdays. The game reads directly from your computer's system clock, so that's how it knows when to activate Birthday Mode or not.
Here's an example: Try setting your system clock to May 16, then run the game. It's not just the fanfare that changes. ;)
Somebody should make a hip hop song that samples the soundtrack of these Apogee intros.
Also, I have fond memories of my mind being well out of the gutter when playing these Apogee games. Because since most songs are made with peoples' minds in the gutter, somebody should just make an innocent song that steers away from love and sexual references!
Excellent games, I have played through most of them. The Stargunner theme was my favorite. And Bobby Prince sounds like a familiar name, I think he made the music for Doom too.
Still, after 3D Realms replaced Apogee, they haven't really made anything after the release of DN3D, Terminal Velocity and others. I think they were involved with Max Payne somehow, but that's about it. Damn that Duke Nukem Forever...
Not exactly. Prey was going to be released by 3D Realms, but 3D Realms handed it over to Human Head Studios due to Development Hell. 3D Realms only published the resulting game.
Those songs remind me of the afternoons i spent playing Monster Bash, Commander Keen, Rise of the Triad...good old times, i wish i could go back in time...
I had annotations off at first out of habit, and yet still instantly recognized the sound for Crystal Caves
