@dorine1240 You are too sweet ! I'm really happy you're enjoying them. I have a couple that I will put on after Christmas. I get on video making kicks and make a bunch and then don't make any for awhile. Kind of have to be in the mood ! lol .. hope you have a great holiday season ... thanks again ... take care.. Toni
@dorine1240 I'm really happy you enjoyed ... there are some pictures of them that you don't see too often. Its always fun to see new ones !! Hope you have a wonderful Christmas.
Doris was so great and what a wonderful version of this song. I grew up listening to her back in the early 50's. Iloved her then and still love her now.
@TheRockinRelic Have to agree with you ... she is great. I love this version from Doris. I've been listening to her since the early 60's ... I'm with ... loved her then and still do ! Thanks ... happy you enjoyed !
Love this track! Doris' honey throat and her ad-libing makes the whole number a jazzy, sexy , masterpiece. Thank you for posting and pictures are great!
Although I've become familiar with much of the Gershwins' work through osmosis, I've just recently come upon this song after reading an analysis of it in the Grove Encyclopedia's article on George Gershwin. I looked up recordings on YouTube so I could hear what the writer was writing about, and this version struck me as one of the best. Day sings with tight, snappy phrasing, and the band swings just the right amount. I may have to revise my prior opinion of Day as too tame for my taste.
I think Doris could sing just about anything. She definitely preferred slower tempo's and was one of the best ballad singers of all time. But - as you can see - she could do a jazzy tempo too. And do it well ! So happy you've discovered this other side of Doris !
@yoodrew She could swing, she could do torch songs--and recorded many like this before the squeaky-clean image solidified. That particular career trajectory inspired one wag to say he knew Doris Day "before she became a virgin." I love this version, too--thanks to the poster!
@noahsdad61 Well - you know Hollywood had a pigeon hole for every star and thats the one they put her in. She really disliked the girl next door.. virgin status she was assigned. And as she pointed out - she was married with children in many of her movies ... so where did those children come from anyway ?? lol
Even after she had that assigned persona she still turned out many songs with a sexy flair. I think she was one of the best ballad singers ... ever !
@Dayniac4324 It's good to appreciate her full range and remember all she was capable of--her "Let It Snow" (you can find it on youtube) positively smolders--thank you so much for this!
@noahsdad61 Oh yes... definitely. She is very underrated. Possibly because she made it all look so easy... which it wasn't. Are you familiar with the song Let It Ring ? Thats another one that smolders. I have it posted. Thank you !!
i like this type of music..im 18 and honestly i would prefere this music over rap. i dont even listen to rap anyways but these songs have more meaning then songs today.and at least you can understand wat there saying the whole time too:) i bet you i own more oldie and big band cd's then any other teenager i know:) i think doris day is an icon and role model.
That's very refreshing to me. I have to say I really don't see the attraction to rap music. You are so right - you can't understand the majority of what they're saying ! And what you do understand you usually wish you hadn't !
Being a teenager in the late 60's early
70's I like a fair amount of rock music - but I always come back to this type of music. Being an old movie nut might have something to do with it !
Thanks for your great comment - really happy you enjoyed !
I HIGHLY recommend you get an album called "The Glory of Gershwin'...Sting sings this song, Meat Loaf sings Somebody Loves Me...Elton John does Our Love is Here to Stay/Someone to Watch Over Me...the record includes Carly Simon, Robert Palmer, Jon Bon Jovi, Lisa Stansfield, Sinead O'Connor, Elvis Costello...it is absolutely priceless. You will NOT regret it!
Thank you Cathy -- I'm just an ole' dayniac and love her music too. I love putting these together - its icing on the cake that others enjoy them !! Thank you !!
Beautiful clip! 5*****!! It's a wonder Doris never worked in a Billy Wilder film, because they would've complimented each other really well one would think.
Great Question....particularly since Doris Day and Billy Wilder were friends. He had dinner at her home on a regular basis with a small group of friends.
Rioamigo, I keep promising myself I'll read Billy's bio or autobiography one of these days, but still haven't. It's also interesting comparing Billy's first choice femme fatales to Doris. IMHO Doris was very much the genuinely sweet friendly 'girl next door' type whereas Marilyn was clearly a man eater who left only skeletal remains after she'd finished with them. So some of us are lucky to still be alive ;-)
I wish I could give more than 5 *'s for your videos! My husband and I re-watched "Young at Heart" recently and loved every minute of it all over again. Her voice always had such joy in it, even if she wasn't really feeling it at the time. :-)
Thank you -- I'm happy you're enjoying them - because I sure have fun making them !! I just love her music - she's amazing. Thanks -- hope you have a wonderful holiday !
lovely song and doris's phrasing is just the best. i think this is the first time i've heard this song. If i had money i'd be buying every single doris cd,dvd and stuff you could get A lot of doris's less known have just became available not that long ago. 5 STARS TONI - I LOVE IT !!! Toni have you ever heard doris sing hernando's hideaway ?
hi toni i wasn't asking if doris did sing hernando's hideaway i was asking if you have ever heard it - sorry for the mix up. Doris did sing hernando's hideaway. my mum had it on record and i used to listen to it all the time but it got ruined or lost or something like that. The reason i ask if you have heard doris sing it is because i think that LP that she sang it on must have been rare !
she was wonderful at singing it as always. of the records i used to listen to doris singing hernando's hideaway was one of my favourites, i wonder if any other doris fans have heard her singing it. i wish i still had it !
I was searching for the Ingar Kristiansen version because I wanted a male version... couldnt find that but I will always love Doris Day :D
