That is correct, the movie starts with the overture which is played over an image of the Lower Manhattan skyline, but what I was talking about that the conductor's score as with the written notes on pages and not the music recorded as audio or audio/visual.
@HectorJW2007 there's no overture in the stage version. It was composed for the movie, thus it's found only on the soundtrack and not the cast recording.
@musicaltheatergeek79@HectorJW2007 there was an overture written for the stage version, performed and licensed for years. however, since it was not arranged by Bernstein himself, the Bernstein estate revoked the score in an effort to 'cleanse' or 'purify' the West Side score. in some instances, the full instrumentation will still contain music for the overture, but never in the conductor's score.
@flashlight13 What I meant was, there was originally no musical overture to WEST SIDE STORY.. Instead of an overture, WSS began with the ballet "Prologue" where the Sharks and Jets "fight". The overture that's playing here was arranged for the film.
oh when u said im sorry to say i thought u meant that they were playing it wrong

Where can I get the full score of this? I have the complete musical but it doesn't have an Overture, I'm sorry to say, it starts with the Prologue.

A little rough around the edges, but a good effort.
