this is a gret studio song. aits a shame that it took them 20 years to get it even better live. just watch their glastonbury performance and see what i mean. this is just my opinion
This song was co-written with an unknown Irish songwriter who was a big fan of David Bowie and wanted to create a stage character who would cause a stir the way Ziggy Stardust did. The Fly was her attempt at doing that.
both paul simon and u2 did their best work after their previous album sucked.simon did graceland after his previous effort failed and u2 did this after rattle and hum...which even u2 admitted sucked big time.
However the songs Desire, Hawkmoon, Angel of Harlem, Heartland, When Love Comes to Town, God Part II and All I Want is You are all on Rattle & Hum. Not bad for 'sucking big time.' U2 being everywhere, overblown and full of themselves during that era should be divorced from the fact that there are a lot of good songs on R & H
Instead of saying the obvious things like: "Wow Edge is on fire here, Adam's bass is ass-kicking and Bono is sexy as fuck", I'd like you to consider that this was written after everyone thought that the shinny shoes, nice kids from Ireland were done for. How wrong were they when they heard the sound of this
@danielsentana this is a great song but there's a really rare version of this song where he uses different lyrics and dang if I can't find it. same song but different lyrics. and I agree with you these guys are far from done which is really cool considering that I'm 46 and their first hit came out when I was just 12..!!
Bono described the song's subject as that of a phone call from someone in Hell who enjoys being there and telling the person on the other end of the line what he has learned
The fact that they went from the earnest, bluesy activism of 'Bullet the Blue Sky' into this dark, comical piss take, this weird catchy industrial pop song, proves that Bono can be a messianic ponce as much as he likes; U2 were still brilliant.
this happened 20 years ago !!! i remener it soo good ! it was like 'WHAT HELL IS THIS U2??? awesome it was a huge transformation for them but it went soo fucking spectacular
I won't disagree that Under the Bridge is an awesome song. Unfortunately, it's let down by some occasionally over-simplistic lyrics and not good enough drums. The Fly, however, is a perfectly crafted masterpiece, somehow making even Adam's crappy bass playing sound awesome. Sorry, but U2 wins.
Great song and bold song for U2 at that time. Too few big artists these days are prepared to take a risk. Damon Albarn has done it but very few others.
This song beat "Under the Bridge" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers for Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. THAT IS BULL CRAP. U2 blows and RHCP should have won that award hands down. Under the Bridge is an iconic song that will go down in history. This is crap that never left the 90s.
@SVBerk65 Ok, that's your opinion (although I don't know why the hell you're watching this if you think it blows). I must ask though, what do you mean with "crap that never left the 90s"? This was made in the 90s. >_<
@SVBerk65 What?!?!?! The stupidity concerning that award was the Actung Baby won in 1993: in 1993 (!) when the album was published in 1991 ! ! ! And, by the way RHCP won the award for "Give it Away" in the category Best Hard Rock Performance.
And, by the way, the only award Achtung Baby deserved would be BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Noone loves U2 as much as me , I listen and analyse the notes intensively, the shivers ,, the tears .. the emotion is beautifully unbearable, like edge guitar solo here, but when they play live there is so much more wonderful edge and adam bits, sorry to say this but the best sounds are when bono shuts up.
@LOW1711 " but when they play live there is so much more wonderful edge and adam bits, sorry to say this but the best sounds are when bono shuts up. " thats a big time WTF, now GTFO.
For me U2 gets BETTER and BETTER even though they age they still ROCK like NO OTHER. Its very stupid when people say that they gone downhill after Achtung. U2 MATURES more and more within each album. You think that U2 members at the age of 50+ would make a album similar to Achtung... it wouldnt be right because of there maturity.
@methuselus I thought Zooropa was a fantastic piece of work. I read somewhere that Zooropa was the perfect compliment to Achtung Baby - that it was the 'morning after' the party of Achtung Baby! Two great albums but Achtung Baby is without doubt the greatest album of the 90s by some distance.
Achtung Baby is by far U2 best ever album, not a bad song on it, it still kicks today, surely any music fan would benefit from sitting down and listening to this album from start to finish
I am so much luckier than a lot of people here. Thats only because I have just discovered this song and in front of me lies a new love. So while you relisten to and relive days where youve heard this song, i shall bask in fools glory and learn to love this song and my life.
Even my 7yearold daughter loves this song, n she keeps re-playing it. Especially the live one on Boston Elevation Tour video. We love it when he closed the song by singing "gotta go.. gotta go.. gotta go.."
@henyandjasmoro Your daughter has awesome taste! Love that dvd. Until the End of the World on that video always gets me going...Edge fighting back the temptations of Bono's Judas... Amazing performance.
@barrottes I remember listening to this CD in its entirety when i was about 14 when it came out and there is not one song on the album that isn't worth a listen. Even the less popular songs like so cruel and light my way were AWESOME!
The Fly solo trancends conciousness and takes you to that place that few solos can, absolute magic, shame there aint more U2 stuff of this outstanding calibre.
One of the great songs off of one of the greatest rock albums of all time.
And for those that hate on everything after this album...you should spend more time with No Line On The Horizon.... really listen to it.... it very much reminds me of this album.

It's funny how folks have a problem with artist when they are successful. These guys did their thing on their own terms. You have no choice but to respect that.
Let's get one thing straight - Nevermind and Achtung Baby, for example, are two great albums but if whatever the fuck you're on about is distracting you from the power of this song, and how absolutely fantastic it actually is, you gotta get your priorities right. Repeat: get your P-R-I-O-R-I-T-I-E-S right! This is U2's stamp on our existence and they fucking rocked it!
Nevermind is a better record. The music is great on this on this record and Bono is a great singer, but his lyrics are always gonna be too pretentious to put him at the very top. The lyrics are too calculated. Alice in Chains Facelift and Dirt are better records as well. Smashing Pumpkins probably also. the 90s were not an English/Irish decade. It was mostly American. The UK was king in the 60s, but not the 90s. Like I said, the band and melodies are great, but something is missing for me.
@TheRealCritique In America it was all about pizza boy rock. U2 was a world Rock band. Zoo TV kicked serious butt. Prffft... Nevermind was a better record... right.
@wendileona pizza boy rock? Huh? What is this? Pretentious douche rock?
One is a phenomenally awesome ballad, I'll give you that. Is Mysterious ways on this? Real Thing? Those are good songs. This song means absolutely nothing.
Cobain had a humor and realness Bono never had, and it meant a lot more than glossy horseshit or personal ballads. Nirvana was more political in the US than U2 could ever be. Of course, none of it matters much now in a world where Taylor Swift wins a grammy. PFFFFFFT.
@TheRealCritique Taylor Swift wins grammy's cos she's a young blonde(jailbait) singer (who cant sing).......remember Britney Spears when she came out back in 1998?
Grammy awards are a joke rewarding Artists who dont even deserve it, its like MTV is only for mainstream music.
@TheRealCritique Know what? Cobain was a huge fan like it or not. He had mad respect for U2 when was alive. He once said that his main goal in making Nevermind was to make a better record than U2. Thats fucking respect. Whether Nevermind was better than any U2 albums a real artist sees real artistry in others. Cobain WAS a great artist and U2 ARE fucking great artists.
@TheRealCritique Many people in the world don't speak english, so f*ck off with the lyrics matter, the music in Achtung is ten times better than Nevermind. U2 always has been a global band, just like The Beatles or Stones, Nirvana deals with America politic themes? And where is the relevance ? USA is not the center of the world , wake up moron.
@DarkAcrobat Nirvana was and IS globally popular and he dealt with human issues that affect all. Stop acting like he was some pro-American attitude guy. He was totally anti-American power etc. That's just a statement from a pissed off idiot. U2 is Irish, so what. You think Ireland is superior to the US? yeah, ok. Both bands were great, and U2 had a much longer career, but Nirvana had a sense of humor. U2 is music for grocery stores on a lot of levels. It ain't that controversial or brave.
I love this U2 album, it's probably one of my top 20 favourite albums I own. Can anyone recommend a similar album either by U2 or another band. Even U2 b-sides from this era, other than whats on Zooropa which I already have.
I know the singles from each album and I know there 80's stuff is good but it's not like Achtung Baby.
what a album...how can they go away and reinvent this great album then pop...no other band has the bottle or know how to make a album like this and pop...still the best in the world by miles..the future needs a big kiss
I cant believe that U2 went from "Where the streets have no name" to "The Fly"... Totally Epic!! U2 are the best at re-invention.. Except for Pop, lol..
this song is my prayer.

Prffft... Nevermind was a better record... right.
wendileona 1 year ago
@wendileona pizza boy rock? Huh? What is this? Pretentious douche rock?
One is a phenomenally awesome ballad, I'll give you that. Is Mysterious ways on this? Real Thing? Those are good songs. This song means absolutely nothing.
Cobain had a humor and realness Bono never had, and it meant a lot more than glossy horseshit or personal ballads. Nirvana was more political in the US than U2 could ever be. Of course, none of it matters much now in a world where Taylor Swift wins a grammy. PFFFFFFT.
TheRealCritique 1 year ago
@TheRealCritique Taylor Swift wins grammy's cos she's a young blonde(jailbait) singer (who cant sing).......remember Britney Spears when she came out back in 1998?
Grammy awards are a joke rewarding Artists who dont even deserve it, its like MTV is only for mainstream music.
But I understand what you mean

@TheRealCritique Know what? Cobain was a huge fan like it or not. He had mad respect for U2 when was alive. He once said that his main goal in making Nevermind was to make a better record than U2. Thats fucking respect. Whether Nevermind was better than any U2 albums a real artist sees real artistry in others. Cobain WAS a great artist and U2 ARE fucking great artists.

@drvertigo where can I see Cobain quote on U2? Is that in the internet?
LastlyMore 1 year ago
@LastlyMore it was during a street interview years ago. Not sure where you will find it but I will never forget it when he said it.

DarkAcrobat 1 year ago

NOBODY was cooler than this in 1991.
Go ahead and Google 1991 and take a look at the ridiculous style we had to deal with back then. Parachute pants.
But THIS. This is cool.

I never particularly rated David Evans - but that solo is truly 'top-draw'. Awesome.
