This one sent me running to my room out of shear terror when I was two. I'm not sure why really, but it has to be something to do with the "eyebrow/eyelash" - "heavy stalker-like breathing" combination. I'm 30 now and haven't seen this in 28 years. I still wonder, why the eyelids? Just turn the head like every other muppet when they sleep...

They don,t. It was maybe some eyelids added on Bert before shotting or it,s a differnt Bert puppet with closed eyes and then they put the normal Bert puppet back after Ernie goes to sleep and shoot it so you can,t see his eyes until it looks like he wakes up.

Yeah you never saw any of their eyes closed in actual skits. This was the only one, I think. Of course, Bert turned away from the camera so they could pull the eyelids off.

I'd figured out that in the bedtime sketches, Bert always slept facing away from the camera because he didn't have any eyelids. I can still remember how blown away I was by this one - "Hey! Bert's got his eyes closed!"
