Danny had so many ideas he was like a guy with so much change in his pockets that every time he'd reach for a coin he'd wind up with a big handful-spilling it all over the place with people following him around snapping up what they could, looking to capture a little bit of that magic.
Someone once said of the improvisations by Luys Da Narvaez that they were amazing to people who knew nothing about music but miraculous to those that did. I think that DG was just the same, a really rare and incredible genius! All true lovers of the guitar should listen and learn.
Danny Gatton was such a great player and I used to go on wednesdays to see Him play down @ Pennsylvainia ave . at a club calledPennies from Heaven . It was a Jazz jam gig with Prevetti on Bass and a drummer and some horn players just unbelievable jams !He was the nicest guy you ever met loved to talk to other guitarist about - what else guitar !
Wow. It's probably been said a thousand times over...but thank you for taking the time to get this out there. The world seems to be built on tragedy at times....1.) The fact that Gatton never got blistering huge when he was alive...and 2.) We all know what two is..I don't need to say it.
My absolute favorite player ever and a constant source of inspiration. I'm also a guitarist that plays a Telecaster and of course, I'm always trying to pick up his chops. And let me tell you, that is no easy task! One of my big regrets is that I never had the chance to meet him or hear him live. There was nothing Danny couldn't do on a guitar. Thanks for posting this clip!
Surely the greatest electric guitarist who ever lived. It should disgust any music lover that such a rare genius was forced to struggle for money & recognition, while no-talent exhibitionist scum like Madonna, "Lady" Gaga & any mumblin' rapper you can name have tons of both.....
Danny lives on inspiring generations and generations of budding hopefulls all over the planet, one eyefull and one earfull and it resonates forever, genius,Russ in UK.
Thanks Gentlemen. They called Danny ''The Humbler''.He was more ''Humble'',than a humbler. I never heard him speak badly, about anyone.[except ,the occasional clubowner HAHA !] He just did his thing. If you enjoyed it,great. If you didn't,well that was OK Too!. JD Rangers
One of the best posts I have ever seen! Just fantastic!! I got to talk to Danny in 1993, right near the end, and he was very cordial and approachable. They called the man "THE HUMBLER" for a very good reason: he could make a chump of just about anyone onstage! Thanks!!!
Hey - don't go telling the riff raff about Danny - let us guys of immaculate good taste keep him all to ourselves! I jest... but have often wondered how much his lack of recognition as a great guitarist - some would say 'the greatest' and I wouldn't argue - led to his tragic death. Ah, well...
Great to see, thanks for posting. I used to see DG on a week night at Club Soda on Conn. Ave. When he played it was like class was in session..He always ripped it up. There was no place like DC in the late '70's early 80s to see great roots bands. Evan Johns, Tom Principato, the Nighthawks (Jim Thackery) what a great scene! Thanks again :)
This a very unique piece of Gatton history from 1983. The instrumental is a classic blend of 50's R&B run through Gattons never ending techniques and imagination. Flawless execution and no repetition, an endless bag of tricks.
Watching danny is like getting a master class in Americana guitar-he could play for 2 hours and never play the same thing twice. Fabulous old interview-RIP in Danny.
What a treat to listen to Danny, who is not only Godzilla on guitar, but a genuinely nice man, very down-to-Earth. That "You can't be fat and play metal, you gotta be thin and hungry-looking," is priceless.
Man.... that's so nice. I'd really like to thank you for posting this gem. Danny is a fantastic player, and does not get a tenth of the attention a guy like him should... It's nearly impossible to get anything about him here in Brazil...... Anyhow, maybe as the saying goes it would be giving pearls to the swine....
What could I say? Knowing that I'm talking to a guy who met and worked with Danny is so thrilling that it brings tears to my eyes.... Great to know that..... really great. That's the magic of music. Here I am, in a distant city, in a far country where blues/jazz never or hardly ever gets played... talking to you.... That's nice.
Thank you again! And keep on the good work!
Btw, how long did you work with Danny? What are you doing now?
Simply the best of all time - fluency in every area. To hear him speak - he was so shy and unassuming - it is sometimes hard to reconcile his quiet personality with his weapon's grade playing. Why in hell did he commit suicide?
mankaloo keep the stories coming. Do you know any bigtime Gatton collectors out there? What years did you see Gatton live and what was the best show you saw him play live??/, your a lucky guy; man!!
Definitely one night at The Roxy- a Thursday (?) night gig in 1988 was something I will never forget. For some reason the guy was so on, that the band was just shaking their heads and trying to watch him play. At one point he was playing slide with a beer bottle and got a little carried away and the beer started foaming all over the neck of the guitar. He wiped it off, laughing and kept on going.
I don't know anyone who collects. We used to go between 87 and 90 to see him in the DC area.
The most technically proficient, inventive, gifted player ever. Danny will be like many great artists and only receive the recognition due him many years after his tragic death. The Humbler . . .

Danny is my favorite guitarist... I asked him about buying a Danny Gatton Tele and
his advice was to buy a japanese tele and load it with barden pickups and save
2 grand.......On the several occasions I got to talk with him.... just great guitar and
insite into amps and what works and what doesn't..............

The most efficient left hand on guitar. Lovely harmonics around 5:00. And he is so funny but I usually get the jokes a minute late.

I might have been at this concert. I played drums 2 or 3 times with Rick Serfas at 8x10. The place was great for music in the 80's.

Thanks for posting this...It's a great clip. I was lucky enough to hear and meet
Danny when he came through Colorado... He always had time to talk with
fans.. If anyone has audio or video of his last trio performance at Herman's
Hideaway in Denver I'd love to find a copy, I was at the show and it smoked...
It was one of his last few live shows.
