In Australia we drive on the left....all overseas visitors are requested to drive on the right...It's fair dinkum. mate...would an Aussie lie to you? ..come on over!
not much tracks out there in the outback be to expensive to lay rails and then youve got a very high risk that the rails are gonna buckle so they use road trains more door to door focused i spose :-)
ok, let me just stop you there, how big is our country? if cargo needs to be transported from perth to sydney, how are they going to do it?
are you going to bork out billions, if not trillions of dollars to build a massive infrastructure of rail networks to link all the major cities in australia JUST so a few oil companies can use them?
It will only cost 100 billion. maybe less. Your estimates are over-exaggerated when you went to the trillion part.
One train can hold 500+ tanks of oil/anything. also, trains transport food, materials, as well as anything else you can think of. It will not be just oil, mind you. never is.
Also, it takes roads to support these vehicles, roads that you need to pay for anyways, and also take much much more maintenance then any rail road.
Also, take into account the gallon per ton a modern freight train can move verses a truck. A truck requires a lot of fuel to move over long distances, a train being light years more economical.
Trains are the most efficient and cost-effective form of mass-transit over long stretches of land that we know of. much much better then trucks in the long run.
for the rail side of things, theyd have to buy trains, build rails, build stations, unloading and sorting yards. lots of money
road side of things, the roads are already there, it costs what, 100g's for a decent truck, then all you need is a driver and 3 trailers, 1 truck and 3 trailers will be alot cheaper than 4 train carridges.
i understand where your coming from, but nobody will fork out the money to pay for that, and the immediate costs far outweigh the future earning potential, especially when it will take years and years to set up, as well as having to buy the land to build on, get people out into the middle of nowhere for years on end to build tracks.. and companies can go into the red so suddenly i dont think it would be on the cards
if it was such a good idea, everyone would be doing it!
Railroads easily pay themselves off. they are meant to be used for 100 plus years. compared to a road, it is better.
Rails can carry anything and a lot of it. They are more efficient then the MOST efficient trucks. now, I'm talking about between massive industrial centers. that will be there for... well... forever. unless 10 million people decide to leave. Road Trains are fine for flexibility, but not for constant mass-transit. as a rule, that's what trains are for.
Also, take into account that trains are making a come back. Tn the next 50 years with rising fuel prices, the trains will come back. the reason these trucks have so many trailers is so that they don't use more fuel then they transport.
Unless people are willing to see 10 trailer road trains soon, the train will be the inevitable choice. It is also safer.
Also, building train tracks stimulates economic growth. plenty of reasons to build tracks.
They don't have the infrastructure that we have in teh states with pipes going everywhere so some of the gas stations are so far out they have to take 4 trailers to fill them all
I think its funny when people ask if your compensating for something because you drive a huge truck or supercar or something. I say "ya i am, a world of mediocraty".
elly, i am really sorry, but easy is for sure not the right word for it. Mayby to drive straight without any curves, but to drive backwards, no way to say easy!!!!
that aint no shit, those figures are per every mile. alot of people take driving for granted and not as a privilage they abuse the laws and it usually results in a death that didnt have to happen.
Well from the wives point of view, they really aren't all that hard to drive. I have done it. Power steering cruise control, just longer than youre average car and trailer. Now backing...thats another story!

Still, amazing beyond belief those vehicles. :o

I did my homework. :D
VonCakeMaster 1 year ago
but roads are multi purposed, for transport of cargo, and for transport of people.
the cost of building these rail networks + maintenence far outweighs the benefits,
and for the efficiency part,
i work for mercedes, the commercial vehicle side,
the actros is an amazing truck,
type "mercedes benz actros most efficient truck" into google and click the first link,
0.8 litres per tonne per 100km.

You don't make wrong turns. If you make a wrong turn you shouldn't be driving a road train. Or you are extremely good at reversing.
