if coil intends to cover it into a funeral song i think they are successful. it's so depressing it can be another gloomy sunday. I do want to know more about coil. Love that Marc plays Death with this scornful smile on his face. Still, my favourite version is Soft Cell's, it's unreplacable.
I was going to make a comment about Marc Almond popping up for no good reason until I glanced at the other comments about him playing the role of death. Couldn't he have carried a scythe or something to make it clearer why he was there? Anyhow, a welcome edition to the many covers of the first cover of this tune.
This was the first song where the proceeds went to aids research, that was in 1985 kiddies. WaxTrax was the label that released the record and definitely was the driving force behind new bands that change the music that we listen today.
Back in the 80's, when our friends were dying of AIDS, one after another, this video would play at BERLIN in Chicago. They took it off the playlist. Too depressing. Today, yoiung gay men have no idea what AIDS is really like without the new drugs. This was our reality. Never-ending death.
This is a work of art. It's statement on the atmosphere of dread, fear, and homophobia at the height of the AIDs epidemic. No one in their right mind would compare this to cheese that Mike Oldfield releases.
It exaggerates depression to the point you stop and think it's pointless being depressed just sit back and let the depression lull over you, a mellon collie if you will i found it more relaxing than depressing i don't like depressing songs and i like this but i prefer it to the other versions As a work of art I think your exagurating its very good but it isnt a first or a monumental piece by any form or standard it couldn't stand even toe high next to oldfield miles davies holst muse hendrix etc
RE: "As a work of art I think your exagurating its very good but it isnt a first or a monumental piece by any form or standard"; You do realise that it is on permanent display in the Museum of Modern Art, NY...
i thought this was really good, but a little too slow for me. it was very dark and eerie, and i liked it, but it was just too slow to listen to all the time..
those who hate this need to accept that they just dont get it. Its not supposed to be the Soft Cell version & you are just showing off your narrow mindedness by dismissing it as such.
Cry all you want about your favorite swingy eighties pop song being ruined-this is a work of art. If Marc Almond "got it" enough to star in it, you're obviously not supporting soft cell bty dissing this version.
this is amazing. I have never seen this. btw I dont listen to all you little shits who know absolutely nothing about electronic music and who is who. Identifying your self with a band is more important than knowing and appreciating groundbreaking music.
kayyy you people that are saying you rather listen to marylin manson more then this. you have to realize that marylin manson covered tainted love as well. tained love is an old song so people that desribe this as a manson cover, is rather very wrong
This is by far the best cover of this song that has ever been recorded. Done in the true Coil style, too. Marc must have been big on this because he appeared in the video! Just because it's nothing like the original doesn;t mean it's terrible. For the subject matter (A.I.D.S) it's more than appropriate.
coil are amazing. this song was done not only as a tribute to soft cell and marc almond, who was their peer, but right during the peak of the AIDS crisis, hence the dirge like quality.
Marc Almond is/was good friends with Peter Christopherson and Jhon Balance (RIP). Marc Almond's music was frequently quite dark in character...far more so than stuff like "Tainted Love." He even sang on at least two Coil songs back in the day.
Of course it's depressing...that's the point. But it's a work of art (it's in the permanent collection at MOMA in NYC). Soft Cell (the band that I'm assuming that you mean as the originators...their version is a cover of the Gloria Jones original from the 60s) wasn't exactly a happy go lucky band themselves...many of their original songs were far darker...see "Sex Dwarf."
This is a great song in search of an decent music video. Soft Cells 2 or 3 versions stink. This guy/coil sounds like he was over medicated. Too much prozac or lithiumn. Yet, I like Pink Floyd. I guess the ending means it is about AIDS. Go figure.
I think Jhonn didn't really take antidepressants or lithium (though I'm not 100% sure). he did took alot of Methedrine at that time (pharmaceutically pure meth) and drunk quite a lot. maybe he's been given some neuroleptics/antipsychotics/tranquillizers, but I don't know for sure.
Love dies, period.

This song was Coils response to losing so many friends to aids..
And if you knew anything about the members and their contributions to music, you wouldn't speak so glibly..especially Peter Christopherson

I prefer the original 1964 song by Gloria Jones . but the Coil version is unique.

Interesting, although the song slightly overstays its welcome.... they should have skipped one verse. The video's great, though.

What a great video. It's hard to listen to this version of the song on it's own, but goes perfectly with the video, really powerful stuff.
