"hardtalk" apparently means hard-headed interuption. This interviewer is paid to be a bloody numb-skull pretending to get to the 'heart' of the matter.
"...this may be their only passport to their prospect of a better life" - sheer cynicism, from a position where the person is totally individualized and made sole responsible, ignoring state and community failures. And again and again...
Yes, I agree that, whether or not indented by the journalist, he helps Scheper-Hughes in making an ordered and solid critique to this type of arguments. It would be good if more anthropologists would have the opportunity to do this on TV!
This is a dialogue about a self-evident matter. The dialogue is creating fuzziness about immorality that should be self-evident to all. This journalist is wholly immoral and is wholly unconscious of his corrupted state. The journalist is suffering from brazen immorality, or better, amorality. It is as if he is answering her thusly. "Well, why can't you bargain for self-mutiliation. Self-mutilation "helps" other people!"
I agree that she is a great anthropologist, however I disagree that the interviewer is arrogant. In fact, I definitely got the impression that he was 'taking a position' for the sake of debate. He didn't display an emotional attachment to his position. He was playing devil's advocate to give her an opportunity to put up all the arguments against his position. I reckon his interview was actually aimed at helping her! And she is brilliant, so of course she was able to respond to all his arguments.
This woman is one of the greatest anthropologists in the world. The interviewer, as is revealed by his arrogant tone, has no idea who he is talking to.
She's blessed for giving voice to those who don't have one.

The interviewer's task i guess is to let her speak.. rather than stopping in very important turns.
