2 things about this part of the movie have always confused me.

1) Why did they leave a bunch of deadly weapons behind in a chest?

2) Kevin is pissed because the psionic blades aren't technically allowed in his game. if that's so......how did they end up in the chest in the first place?

1) The chest of holding sends all items placed within it into a small pocket plane. When items are moved into it, they are suspended inside this plane. When retrieving items, one can simply reach into the chest and imagine what they are looking for or by simply looking inside it. The item will then appear in their hands. By this, you don't have to worry about items rubbing against each other, or fear grabbing a blade. On a natural 1 however they grab the wrong item.

2) the sword may be an item from a previous campaign. It is hard to move from one campaign to another while keeping the same setting (its often worn out) so an option is to bring them to another world. If you noticed, all of the items that he said aloud as he pulled it out of the chest are from the game "munchkin," basically a parody of D&D. I think that the DM had a "joke" period where they brought in weapons from other games, not realizing that they would be kept.
