God bless Laurie Records. They had some of the best groups recording for them. I remember like it was yesterday listening to WMCA, WABC, WINS, WNEW (all NY AM radio stations). I met Murray Kaufman (Murray the "K") after he retired from radio, and thanked him for the hours and hours of enjoyment I got from his show. Forgive me, I digress, its hard not to....
I grew up in Canada and if you stayed up late 2-3 in the morning in the 50's, we could tune in Murray the K, I heard some great music then, that I otherwise might not have heard. we didn't get much Rock n' Roll over the airwaves then.
I was just barely a teenager when this song came out. I loved it then and some years later sang it became the final song I would sing to my daughter at bedtime. As a dad, I would like to thank the Mystics. (And thank you for posting this song. Every note is exactly as I remember it.)
This song was recorded long before I was born but I love artists from the 50's and 60's. Thanks for posting. By the way, this is the original recording.
This sounds to be the original, just in clean clear stereo. Mono records back then seemed to have a more Full sound to them. Some did depending on the Producer etc.. Also, some Stereo versions were sometimes a Different take than the Mono versions..
Time and circumstances seem to take their toll on the voices of male singers the older they become. The Mystics' current rendition of this song doesn't compare to the original version featured here. Man, we all hate getting older. I imagine entertainers share this opinion more than the average guy does.
As far as the "more punch" issue, maybe it's because many of us had better ears in those days. Plus the sound you to just jump off the needle of those little record players, even with the tin speakers. I think most Laurie-label songs had a strong sound.
I like this song don't get me wrong but for some reason I remember or misremember the lead as having more punch .. just a little more voice punch or maybe I heard another version?
@frankothemountain The Beach Boys are, of course, a great group, but they tended to screw up the remakes they recorded. "Barbara Ann" and"Come Go With Me" are two that come to mind. This song is the original, and a classic.
@11xzxzxz Yup, it's the original. I was a teenager when the song was popular. My memory for music is pretty darn good. Besides, would someone named Scuzzy lie?
I agree with alexmonte. It was a wonderful era to grow up in. Every generation has their problems, but at least when we said take it outside, it meant a fist fight not guns and knives and most of the time, hands were shaken and it was over. It was a much safer world. Hopefully our world will change for the better. Thank you for the posting and wonderful memories.
When I first heard the Beach Boys I remember saying I had already heard better harmonies earlier. This is what I was referring to. This is what Rock and Roll was about. Anything that followed music like this was secondary, imo.
@mikemikeyf everyone has those who come before them to influence their styles. to cut down the Beach Boys is almost a crime, for a group that hasn't stopped performing for 50 years. sure they have splintered, some have passed on, but the ones that survive are still out there to this day. if that is secondary then so be it, I just think you're being a little too critical.
the world was alot better back then even know it was rasict back then things where a lot yeppie then what they are today there where more jobs going and houses where yeppie it was a much better place to live in people didint igore you much and eveyone was nice to each other unlike today people seem to just igore each other and they always make up excerises after excerises i am sick if it the world needs to go back 50s years ago when the world was desent thank you people for listing
@alexmonte21: Suggestion: Learn to speak/spell........ladies like guys who can do so.......and they did 50+ years ago, when I was listening to the Mystics.
Big cars, white shoes and socks, beach-girls, placid and pleasant evenings, great rock........it's all right here, and at one time it was real........1958-1960, and beyond.
@toddwindyhill; And best of all, I was there to listen to this, blaring from the convertibles as they "cruised" around town and along the beaches......the ladies LOVED it!!!
Hadn't heard this song in many, many years & I do thank you so very much for sharing this with the world! Best song I have ever listened to...Barry in PA.
@nucleuscontourThe Mystics were a wonderful group they appeared here in Asia in Manila Singapore and HK in the 60's! They were very popular! Hushabye So Tenderly Blue Star were all hits!
