  • this is like an episode of the old Doctor Who

  • This video used to scare the #%@$ out of me when I was a kid.

  • THis would be a good video for Pop Up Video...maybe they could explain exactly what is going on! Always liked this song.

  • Imagine if this was the theme song for Eubanks' Card Sharks. Haha...

  • yeah michael jackson was inspired by this video. he even copied the end of "this man is mine" by heart where ann wilson sings "whew who hu who"

michale jackson stole from white women.

now the hip hop hags copy the glam of 1980s women rockers but never give them credit.

  • this video did raise some eyebrows. the song was good though. it is still good.

some great songs of 1981 came from kim carnes, grace slick's 2nd solo album and the pretender's had an album out in 1981 that was good. i guess it was not that bad even though all the disco songs of the late 70s were never played.

  • What a killer song and a trippy video ...... One of my favorite songs by KIM

  • Well, I gotta tell ya, that is far more terrifying than anything I would ever expect from Kim Carnes. That certainly boosted her cool points total by at least three!

  • what a masterpiece!

  • @CHIPCHATPOKER1 hello son.

  • very san francisco

  • I used to listen to this song but never saw the video until a couple of days ago. Now I can't watch it enough. Great song by a beautiful woman with a great voice.

  • This was the template for Thriller, it's so clear.

  • just a freaky now as it was when it was on TBS's "night tracks" back in the day, from duets with KR to this, I don't think they drank a cup of coffee and came up with the idea for this video, lol.

  • I've got this track on my ipod, one of my favorite tracks.I can't believe how bad ths vid is. Worse than

I remember from thirty years ago.

  • I remember when MTV used to play this vid two or three times a day.

  • I'm so jealous of the dude @ 4:16! I wanted to do that to Kim Carnes back in the day :-)

  • the laughing at the end is very creepy scarier than 'thriller" maybe sorry Vincent.

  • Kim hit #28 in Billboard, 9-19-81. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • STEP RIGHT UP KIDS, IF U DARE!!!!! See the amazing cavalcade of FREAKS in this mind-blowing video..at the 2:30 mark, watch out for: THE AMAZING MAN ON FIRE... the 7 ft. tall sax player...assorted trannies...The KID WITH THE EXTRA LARGE HEAD BOUNCING A BALL...A MONKEY MAN...and of course THE LIZARD KING!!!!

  • I bought the album Mistaken Idenity when it first came out. This is the first time I saw the video for "Draw of the Cards". I does look like it was ahead of it's time for that period in music vids. However the song is one of my favorites for it's arrangement , the hot quitar riffs throughout and the searing saxophone added a sexy smooth touch. Still sounds great today....

  • Don't EVER wake up to watch this video...that's how I first watched it! I feel this was WAAAY ahead of its time...and it still has bite...love it.

  • song is definitely one of those lost little gems from the early 80's ...kinda sounds like the group Tangerine Dream..

  • video reminds me of david bowie's "ashes to ashes" video.

  • i've played this song 500 times over the years....great mixing, production and saxaphone....always thought it was way ahead of it's time......

  • Wow, I'm not the only one that was creeped out over this video as a kid- especially with that weird guy in the end!

  • @acrovader I wondered what the heck was going on there. It has haunted me since i was a kid.

  • A mystic song of Kim Carnes - and her best I think!

(And what a great guitar solo)

  • i saw this video back in 1981 but forgot about it. this was and still is a good- sounding song with its electric guitar and synthesizers. i listened to radio in the 1980s not videos except for about 1986-1988 when i would watch music videos but even then i still listened to way more radio.

  • this song is so fuckin dope! classic

  • Great song. Always sounded a bit mysterious.

  • Thanks for video. I remeber this song on the radio but i couldnt remember what the title was. Havent heard it in about 20 years

  • One of my favorite tunes from the eighties....ohhhhh!!!and that voice.....MORE FANTASTIC `80`s music at my channel!!!!! Take a look....

  • i dont get the ending

  • I had some serious nightmares from this video when it ran on MTV back in '81..They should have slapped a warning label on this : WARNING THIS VIDEO CAN POTENTIALLY FRIGHTEN CHILDREN FOR YEARS. Still to this day gives me the chills, that dude in the lizard/satan man costume was scarier than Freddy, Jason, and Manson all in one!!

  • @cappy2009 you are not kidding, lol....the video was tripped out enough to begin with, but then you got that freakazoid looking creature at the end? oh, hell no!!!! horror movies don't freak me out, but that video did something!!!

  • I always thought that this tune was better than "Bette Davis Eyes" due to the fact that it was more dramatic. Just putting that fact out there.

  • @kja427 totally agree...one of the trippiest songs she did...

  • I loved this album and this video.

  • I love Kim Carnes' jaw shape. I think it's so sexy!

  • Always liked this song much better than Bette Davis Eyes.

  • I thought the snake dude at the end was the coolest thing I've ever seen as a kid lol.

  • I'd like to chat with someone who performed this clip !very impressive and scary!

  • Is there realy an evil laughter at the end of this song?

  • @POLTERHORROR Yes there is. The name of the album/cd is called "Mistaken Identity". It is a really good one.

  • @POLTERHORROR Oh yeah! What do you think? Was Vincent Price scarier in

"Thriller"?rather i think this laughter is more frightening.

  • @POLTERHORROR Yes, there is the evil laughter at the end of the song.

  • The earliest rock videos were some of the most creative and innovative, despite their limited budget, and were quite cinematic. I prefer them to the videos of today....

  • This was a good song to smoke a fatty to and crank the hell out of it. Hell,it still is!

  • That album 'Mistaken Identity' has some awesome tracks on it. Unfortunately here @ YT people only seem to know two - this and Bette Davis. Schade. ;)

  • Along with Voyeur,Kim's best song!!

  • Hit 328 in Billboard. God bless!

  • LOL...The same happened to me hvanasse. When I was a kid I found this video kind of scarry and yet nice and intersting in a strange way, specially at the end the guy seemed scarry that I remember having nightmares..

  • This is amazing and I'm actually mad that It took me 23 years to hear this song and this album. Brilliant!

  • What a spooky, nightmarish video... really disturbed me back then!

  • Did Kim wear the same outfit as she did in "Bette Davis Eyes"?

  • great song, definitely a weird video though, I don't understand why the only song by her you hear on a regular basis is "Bette Davis Eyes" when she had a string of classic hits from the early to mid 1980s

  • cocaine's a hell of a drug.

  • @hellbilly34a always applicable

  • .........and reminds you of the good ole days of the 80's !

  • no chorus?

  • Everyone in the cast is trying to be so weird and scary, and then at 2:28 the dude in the middle looks like the caterer or a pizza delivery guy.

  • flashback city - nice catch

  • Did you hear this frightening laughter at the end?

  • Great use of the Uncanny Valley.

  • Man this video used to creep me the hell out, lol

  • @talltrini10

    me too!!!

  • @talltrini10 Welcome to the mind fuck.

  • Uh I never could get the guy at the end licking Kim's ass. It was then and is still now very naughty and fun but I don't get how he fits into the song.

  • "Logan's Run" meets a mime convention. Fierce!

  • When i was 7 years old this vid scars me ....i was very afraid but i loved it

  • LOL!, I was 7 years back in 1981 and this video scared the shit out of me too, I did and I still like the song though. Another video that gave me the chills was "Another brick in the wall" by Pink Floyd (the cartoon version). That big puppet scared the hell out of me!.

  • I forgot about this song until I did a search on Kim Carnes. The song is different. I especially like the music. The video is strange, but it makes you want to watch it.

  • beautiful song, mysterious, prophetic, wack video, i luv Kim's raspy voice, it's classic

  • Strange video-great song!

  • they be trippin man

  • what a SONG!!! mom still has this on vinyl. dope shit man

  • fsa778 draw of the cards is an excellent song. i use to play it alot while i dee-jayed a lot of clubs back in the 80"s thats totally cool how your mom still has it on vinyl. peace!

  • under rated miss of the century

  • Totally exotic.

  • This was really a great video and sound track. I think it was a significant influence for Michael Jackson's Thriller song and video.

  • Wow. That just jogged a memory I had completely forgotten about. The guy at the end of this video who starts licking her scared me the crap out of me as a kid!

  • That used to be the case with me as well.

  • Also I agree with both of you.

  • Gosh! I shared the same damn feeling, nice memories, what freaks

  • @hvanasse Me too. In fact i remember that part more than the rest of the video.

  • Man! I haven't seen this video in over 25 years! This was always my favorite Kim Carnes song. It just sounds cool. Thanks for posting!

  • one of the best songs i ever heard. greetngs from poland

  • Totally agree

  • kim carnes is much underrated.

  • I am in this video(close-up of "bittersweet" and some other shots). I have looked for this for 20 plus years. I'm also glad that people are still interested.

  • tell us how was the experience and how was to work with kim and those magnificent dancers.

  • It was great experience working in the video media and because it was a "new" way to present songs and in some ways tell the story from the point of the writer, artist and or director. The dancers were all pros

  • May we ask, How did you or how was you choosen for this video?

  • I was asked by a friend to give him a ride to the shoot. After arriving the director asked me if I would be in the video.I never thought at that time that I would have close-up shots and have my face fill the screen.(I wish I could find a cleaner copy). I guess I had a look he was able to incorporate into story.

  • Where and when was this video shot?

  • @klct2006 probably in Los Angeles, where Kim Carnes used to live until shee moved to Nashville.

  • this music is so weird experimetal , they would call this now electronica lol

  • HELLO YOU ALL

it's a frightfull nightmare this vidéo because this is a real deep dark atmosphere and real monsters a voodoo evil mambo real echoing frightening manical evil laughter WE A RE ALL KIND OF GO TO HELL AND HAVING FREEZING BLOOD BRRRR AAAARGH!!!!

  • very good description polterhorror...

Only one thing varies with myself,if aces are high and dueces are low, then the kimkarnes group are not representing words so the laughter is not defineable as on video.

  • HELLO thank you for the comment i just wanted to say that the scary big joker laugh heared at the end of the vidéo scared me so much!!!

  • Kim Carnes = great singer!

  • Isn't that Toni Basil right behind Kim as she starts coming out of the ground?

    Great video and song!!!!

  • Such a great song...My brother had this song on a tape in his car when I was ...oh my god it's been so long 20 sumthin years...good lord! Still an awesome song!

  • good song.. summer 81

  • this video used to scare the crap out of me when i was a kid...especially the snake tongue guy at the end that carries her away haha

  • That guy is probably in kims family so we should not make fun of her.

  • How the heck would they have done that effect when kim enters that bathtub full of water? otherwise its great cinematography and direction from Mulcahy

  • good question but I think it leads to evil intent on the part of these pictured.

  • Thanks for posting this clip Dicaguido. This was always my favourite song of hers.

  • Tremenda rola, esto es lo mejor, me hace sentirme en el aire, sleep walking, nice, han sabido algo de ella?

  • This is what 80's videos were all about in a nutshell! Love it!!!!!

  • Thank God I was able to find this wonderfully avant garde song here! It's a trip!

  • love it....

  • Balearic Gem

  • Russel Mulcahy did a good job with this masterpiece

  • I agree. I wish he would come back making music videos like this again.

  • I remember Kasey Kasum hosting This weeks top ten videos on tv back in 1981! He would be smiling befor the vid played and after it was over he flinched back to compose himself!! This vid was truely a masterpiece!

  • Yes, that guy with the long arms and snake tongue ... WEIRD!

  • Yes, that guy with the long arms and snake tongue ... WEIRD!

  • what's with the guy with the long arms at 3:45?

  • that devil is so on acid

  • She down-played her sexiness & made U focus on her talent (voice)! Love that! How HOT would she be in a tight, little camisole dress, a tiny bit more make-up & heels!? Love that she plays it down to force your imagination!

  • what a woman!!

    totally love her!

  • I always thought Kim Carnes' videos were right up their with Kate Bush for the weird factor, but like Kate, they were little stories being told. Brilliant, audacious videos. They don't make them like this anymore.

  • Anyone know who is doing the guitar work on this track? The first solo and the co-solo with the sax.........it's excellent!

  • I think his name is Josh Leo, according to a Wikipedia search on this album.

  • The heavy guitar solos are by probably by Danny Kortchmar, though Wikipedia isn't exact. Josh Leo was more of a studio guru.

  • The guitarist doing the weird solo stuff on Draw Of The Cards is Craig Hull. Amazing player, especially in the weird stuff. I wrote the music portion and played keys on Prophet V. Kim's husband Dave does the great laughing at the end.

  • Wow, excellent work, your playing really set the tone and over-all feeling of mystery that made this song work so well, and of coarse, what a writing accomplishment, you had to be happy to hear this come out so well. Thanks for commenting.

  • Are you Bill Cuomo? You are a great musician! You worked with Kim between 1976-1988. You did a fantastic job when you played acoustic piano on "Love Comes From Unexpected Places" performed by Kim Carnes (SAILIN' album, 1976).

  • gm--guilty as charged. Thank you.

  • In honor of all artists in every field. It might be nice to list the person who choreographed "The Draw of The Cards" and "Bette Davis Eyes" Her name is Toni Attell

  • in the early 80s i had a taped copy of this track from radio 1 and it lasted about 10 mins, does any 1 out there have a copy of it to share? any way its great to hear it again after about 20 yrs, thort id never hear it again, hooray for u tube

  • The Mistaken Identity CD has been reissued. Also Voyeur and a couple other Carnes classics are out on CD.

  • Ive been looking for this video for about two decades! I almost started to doubt it's existance. Most bizzare and spooky end to a 80's music video ever! WTF is right!!

  • WTF?

  • What's wrong with this video? It stops like immediately :(

  • Playing ok now, never mind lol

  • i love this voice!

  • fantastic!havnt heard this since the eighties.but i never forgot it.

  • Kim Carnes Music Vidoes are very artistic. alot of fantasy involved. Go Kim! XD

  • Oh MY.................. The video does exist.... and I thought I was crazy when I described the end of the video to my family and friends.

I knew There was a guy who picked Kim Up and had snake-like tongue.

Thanx for clearing this doubt that haunted me for years; and scared the hell out of me as well.

  • Thanks so much for posting this. Brings me back to MTV heyday and watching for hours in the sweltering suburbs during summer break. Great synth work. Totally Russell Mulcahy.

  • this video use to scare the shit out of me!! when it would air on MTV, that very first scene with the people dancing in the street, was enough to make me run my ass into the closet!! Cool video....so fuckin 80's

  • MTV used to air videos? lol (seriously, I don't wacth MTV these days, haven't for many years now).

  • yeah they use to air all the odd ball videos for a week and then you would never see them again...now its just scripted reality tv shows

  • video clips of 80 were cools !

  • OMG! I was looking for this video a few weeks ago! I stumbled upon it while looking up my own (Bunyip) video, ironically...

  • It looks like "Grandpa's Magical Toys".

  • I have always preferred this song to 'Betty Davis Eyes'.

  • Me too, I always thought this was an underrated hit, Kim Carnes sure has alot of great hit songs.

  • Awesome video for an awesome song! One of the best singles to be released in 1981 in my opinion.

  • Great guitar solo and sax at the end.

  • We all were scared of music videos from the 80s. (I'm one of them too. See my old screenname and the videos that scared the hell out of me)

  • ha ha i have thought about this video so many times over the years and how it freaked me out at 10 years old. the monster yes but that black dude that says "bittersweet" gave me nightmares

  • I´m agree,in those earlies 80´s the clip were dreaful

images,i like it more than "Bette Davis.." in the

    deep...of the darkness

  • An Illuminati song if ever there was was...

  • let's not forget the "bunyip" video from Dot and the Kangaroo. classic creaps!

  • "In The Air Tonight" freaked me out too! Also Split Enz "Dirty Creatures" when that guy's head gets cut off. For years, whenever I'd go somewhere with a murky pond or lake, I'd expect to see that guy's head!

  • I'm so happy to know that I wasn't the only kid scared to death by this video! Thanks for the other nostalgic reminders of creepy videos from times past... I'll add David Bowie's "Look Back in Anger" as another one that made me turn down the brightness knob on my TV.

  • In a 1980s interview, Kim Carnes said that one of her favorite films is Black Orpheus (1959) -- set during Rio de Janeiro's Carnival! The film also provided inspiration for Carnes's 1981 music video, "Draw of the Cards" (by "Bette Davis Eyes" director Russell Mulcahy).

  • Also,Fiat Lux's "Secrets", Eurythmics' "Missionary Man", Romeo Void's "A Girl In Trouble". There's so many videos I can think of for right now.

  • I'm not alone!! OMG.. I was just telling my friend on MSN how this video used to creep me out as a kid.. and then I started reading these comments.. lol.. Awesome!

  • No way - I was too - especially near the end!!! Creepy!!!

  • I too was scared shitless as a kid with the end of the video, but now, I'm hooked on it lol.

  • I'm also a member of the "I Was Creeped Out By The Ending Of This Video" Club. One of my fave Kim songs, tho. She sounds amazing.

  • Loved this video, I was about 13 or 14, VERY erie! The end IS actually scary, but I love it!

  • This video clip was dreadful to me,for those years there were diabolical videos as "Landslide"-Olivia Newton John,"I love it loud"-KISS,"Pressure"-Bily Joel,

"Bark at the Moon"-Ozzy Osbourne and more unholy

clips, this one seems to be based in "The Island of the

Doctor Moreau" because there are amorph beings!

  • This video was great to watch in the wee hours. This and David Bowies ,Ashes to Ashes video were the creepiest.
