@clcowboy2004 Sorry to say this was not true traditional Country Music but its successor
The Nashville Sound, but it did work very well. As for Don Gibson, his roots were firmly planted in Country Music but, being a survivor, he evolved. Excellently.
It sounds as great as when I first heard it way back in '61. One of those records you never tire of hearing. Can't believe the 19 dipsticks who didn't like it!
if I'm not mistaken, my hero Chet produced Don Gibson. One thing Chet did recognize was a great voice and writing, and mixing that bass drum more in front, that was cool. A good song is a good song is a good song.
CLASSIC! The base "intrusion" (right on time), has always given this song a greater depth than it would have otherwise had. LOL, at age 65, I remember when it first came out. Good times, bad times
When you go back and listen to music like this it brings tears to your eyes, not only because the music is so good, but because all the modern music sucks so much compared to this.
@knearhood8 Yep... You got that right. I may be an old fart, but this brings back my 16 years full of piss and vinegar. As a porfessional musician, seems that today people have shit in their ears !
Don Gibson--You are up there with the best of them! You made beautiful music and I dont think enough people have had the chance to appreciate it Not over here in the UK anyway!
Love this guy. Incredible songwriter, great guitar player and carried on the long and proud tradition of C&W pill poppers. Not much of a country fan but Gibson transcends genres like Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, the Carter Family -- hell, too many to mention. Maybe I'm a country fan after all. I definitely would be if they were all as cool and talented as Gibson.
I'm a Danish die hard Clint Eastwood fan. Saw Heartbreak Ridge for the third time on tv and simply had to hear this song again. What a film and what a song -from two great men. God bless.
Oh how I love this song, makes events of my chilhood come flooding back. There is only one word for my thoughts ....Nostalgia(sentimental yearning for a period of the past )
Yes...I recall listening to this song when it was brand new and thinking of a particular girl with a longing that made my stomach queasy. One listen and it all comes back to me 50 years later.
Mr. Gibson re-recorded this in the Sixties and as good as this version is, the re-record is even better! But, this is, as always, a wonderful listen. Thanks for posting it and continuing to promote the memory of a fine entertainer!
Don Gibson was so handsome! He appears to be a Native American, does anyone know if he was? He has such beautiful facial features, very strong and handsome. Anyway, he also made some of the best country music of our time! Still enjoy and appreciate listening after all these years!
As I said to Hillbilly; I am proud we shared the same ancestors. My Grandmother and his father were siblings. 3rd cousin I think.......And yes . It is Shelby's son......
Don Gibson: Genius. To have had a voice like that and to have wrote all those fantastic songs. My late brother and I would sometimes sing the Everly`s version, in harmony, key of G with the drop down chord of F. This would be in the early 60s. Cant believe it`s over 50 years since I first heard this song. Still gets to my heart and soul, even after all this time.
Wow. Never heard of him before, even though he wrote important songs recorded by Ray Charles and Neil Young. Fantastic. Now I'll have to see "Heartbreak Ridge."
Sea of Heartbreak is a song written by Paul Hampton and Hal David and recorded by Don Gibson in 1961. The song has been covered by other artists a number of times, including Johnny Cash. It has also been featured in several movies, among them the Heartbreak Ridge starring Clint Eastwood
I have no idea what Heartbreak Ridge is, but I've always loved this song, grew up with it...with or without some person or movie making it famous...good song no matter what!
not like but LOVE without a doubt THE greatest country song ever sung by a man!!! no disrespect meant to all the brilliant country singers but this song has never been equalled much less surpassed!!! it is a heartbreaker!!!
According to Wikipedia, this song was recorded in 1961, yet in the film "Heartbreak Ridge" they show footage from the Korean War while the song plays in the intro to the film. Almost 10 years apart chronologically, but somehow it fits beautifully. Clint Eastwood is a genious.
One of the true great classic artists with a gem of a song. I really miss hearing these sort of songs on radio, all we get today is downright rubbish from so called singers, what a joke, they couldn't lick the boots of yesterdays performers, who would stand in front of the mike and just sing, without having to wear obscene outfits to distract people from their lack of talent.
This was the single that really put Don Gibson over the top. Probably one of the most expressive vocal performances ever recorded. It didn't hurt to have Chet Atkins playing gut-string lead on this record, either.
the most brilliant country song EVER sung by a man(i fall to pieces the female first).Timeless and heart breaking this is humanity revealed.did they know all those years ago that then was country s most moving had been recorded? just hit the rewind button for hours!!!
I remember before Heartbreak Ridge, when this song could barley reach 1, 000 views, now it's halfway to a million views. The whole world owes a debt to Clint Eastwood for ensuring this song won't be forgotten and lost forever like so many other beautiful classics we'll never be able to hear.
