and people say larry merchant is an asshole... he just likes FIGHTERS... (you don't have to win to be a fighter...)... or you can win and not be a FIGHTER...
i'm getting a tatoo of bobby's face after the bazooka limon fight tomorrow... I have tears in my eyes watching this... danny lopez is my 5th favorite fighter of all time (tyson, hagler, jimmy wilde, stanley ketchel, danny lopez... bobby just might be #6...)
You can still be my hero Bobby.....you have more heart than most and we are all sinners, and have done things we regret....Bobby has done more than pay his dues and continues to pay his dues to this day...keep teachn boxing Bobby and never give up!
With all do respect.....You need to worry about yourself rather than posting smack about other people. Wasting your time talking smack about others online and not in front of their face shows some maturity issues. Be blessed and go on about your business.
Look.. idiot! You don't have a CLUE who Bobby Chacon is yet you think you have the right t to say that he {or anybody} DESERVES to live on skid row? What is the name of this so called church that teaches such hateful behavior so I can be sure to AVOID IT ... AND YOU! BTW.. does Pastor beat up everyone who pisses him off? Who the F*** do you think you are? BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE? YOU DISCUST ME.

WOW...You have truly restored my (our) faith in humanity. Thank you for your quick response and mostly for being able to undersand where we were coming from. I'm sorry I got a little heated and harsh words were sent. I do tend to be rather overprotective, {kinda like a Momma bear} when it comes to my family but your understanding and compassion will also be a lesson for me...So thanks again
@JONNYB21CA I'm sure your heroes are perfect. Who might they be? Superman? Spider-Man? If it's not them, I'll tell you they might be worse then Bobby. Go cry on Ray's shoulder.
Bobby Chacon was not only a Prize fighter, he is a father, a son a brother and most of all a hero, my real life hero, my dad. Biologically. And I'm sorry that you only witnessed him in a bad time of his life. In reality he has a great big heart and is a strong loving and giving person. For you to judge him when you don't even know him... I really feel sorry that you do not know him as I and so many others really do.
@johnachacon Who judged him. I called the quick moment I saw and met him. I don't know where he stand now or ever. I didn't post this about Bobby for my health. I posted this so people that never knew real boxing can see what it was when it was. I congradulate you for having a great father. But that doesn't excuse your confusion for what you thought I was posting this for. He was one of my favorites.
@boxingfan805 Boxing fan first it was my cousin who posted that under my account, I see you posted positive comments, thank you very much!! It was someone who had tried to put him down that she was responding to. As his daughter I have had to sit back and watch many people tell stories about my dad, I will not argue with anyone, my heart and mind are firm in knowing who my dad is and I will always defend his honor but in an honorable way not hashing it out on a website.Sorry again
There is no excuse for the way Bobby took advantage of rays compassion and kindness. Ray pulled Bobby off the street, feed, housed, and provided for Bobby.. Bobby pretended to be in worse conditiont then what he really was
Really? And Ray's wife is at no fault for that if that's true? And Ray would get back with a woman after something like that? Who is the sick one if all that is true? Ray or Bobby? AT least Bobby has an excuse for being off!
how pathetic. just because someone cheats on a person doesnt automatically mean the other person stops loving them. Im glad his wife went back to him. and in my opinion it takes a low life SOB to mess with a married woman, especially a preachers wife, even more when that preacher pulled him out of the gutter. Whats Bobbys excuse,? he was a piece of shit, thats no excuse. He was a courageous fighter though, and thats what hes remembered for
I met Bobby Chacon today at Ontario Mills Mall in Ontario California. I was there in a shop waiting on my girl at the dressing room. Bobby was doing the same. I had no idea who this man was but he starts to ask me if I like boxxing etc. I of course said yes and he said he was a boxxer and showed me his hall of fame ring. Now I am here on youtube trying to get more info on the hall of famer that decided to start talking to me out of the blue in a shop.
Met Bobby a couple of years ago at Raley Field West Sacramento, Ca. I also seen him when he fought Limon at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento, Ca. back in 1984.
I too met bobby chacon a couple years ago at a amateur boxing show with my father, Herman Montes. He seemed to be a lot worse than he did in this video, its a shame because he seemed like a great guy. I guess im lucky my dad retired early also, his life is very similar to little red lopez
I applaud the sentiments of Birthofcharlie, but that would hardly solve the greater problem. There are too many Bobby Chacons for Oscar to afford, sadly.
Still, Chacon is one of my favorite fighters. Given the choice, I sometimes wonder if he might not do it all again anyway. Not sure what that says. both sad and beautiful, perhaps.
heart breaking. would it be so hard for someone like Oscar to throw Bobby a few bucks his way for being a Latino great that paved the way for boxers like him? I mean the guy could right a check 100,000 and not miss it.
Nobody who has ever seen Bobby in action will ever forget the beauty of his boxing combinations, I know I won't! I watched him spar with the great benny Urquidez and I was amazed at his talent always.
Heres another gem.If someone kod you in 9rd then in 2rd youd think youd concede defeat...,not Bobby,he won the third bout. Also he was so out of shape, for the 2nd Olivares bout, that they suspended his purse, even Ruben admitted that
When Bobby beat limon he was supposed to be washed up,he then made a voluntary defence against a guy who had beat him two years earlier, both fights were ring mags fight of the year.A further two years later he had an unbelievable fight with ex lightweight champ Arturo Frias.I dont want to spoil it in case you dont know, but plz watch that fight
Im 35 now and have never met my biological dad! He was a bantam weight boxer out of the Los Angeles area! My mom says he was good friends with Bobby Chacon and Indian Red Lopez! If anyone has ever heard a boxer named George Gonzales please help me with any info regarding or that might assist me in my search! Middle name Gary! He was adopted, once a garment cutter, He use to train at the Main St. Gym! My moms name is Ana Maria Barraza! Thank you! God bless!
I just got off the phone with Bobby Chacon! We were stable mates back in `76. Joe Ponce was our manager. Fortunately, in spite of the medical irreversibility of pugilistica dementia, Bobby is now showing signs of healing from that lethal disease! Keep him in your prayers!
I was lucky enough to meet Bobby before a fight of his at the San Diego Coliseum. He seemed surprised when I told him I saw many of his fights on armed forces tv in the Philippines. He also seemed like a very nice humble guy and that really impressed me. And just the fact that he took the time before a fight to chat with a stranger who wished him well and hoped he regained his championship, which he did. I've always considered it an honor that I met him. A very class act.
the battle of the teenyboppers was lil red vs. tury "the fury" pineda. that was my 10th bday present from my dad. a classic fight. Pineda was my hero, and Danny starched him with a perfect left hook. I would LOVE to see a clip of that fight. it was the biggest grossing fight in the history of the olympic. I wonder what ever happend to Pineda. Does anyone know where to get a copy of that fight??
This was real boxing back in the day. Little red was beat by Salvador Sanchez and Chacon fought some classic fights in Sacramento. Brings back memories.
I remember those battles well, carnal. They fought at the Memorial Auditorium on J street. Bobby Chacon, Danny 'Little Red' Lopez and Salvador Sanchez are still heroes to me.
Bobby will always be remembered as a great champion.... I wish him the best of luck and may God always be with him... Ive been lucky and honored to meet him.
I'm glad all you seem to like this video! I met Bobby like a year after seeing this and it made me choke up a bit when I was talking to him. He seemed to be in worse conditions when I met him than in this video.
damn....almost brings a tear...i had forgotten these guys...what an era for all boxing. What do we have today...whose the heavyweight cham?..when i was a kid everyone knew...now no one knows or cares. Glad for "Little" Danny Red though. Those were the days. Thanks for the video!
I followed both of their careers every Thursday night on TV on Boxing from the Olympic Auditorium in the 70's. They were my age and I identified with both of them. This clip is hard to watch.
powerfull.... gripping.... emotional, this is a incredable video clip of two good fighters who made great fights. little red and chacon i salute them as the true soldiers that come so few and far between. what a class act.... both of them
l.a. boxing back in the day was incredible... but boxing is brutal and unforgiving... unfortunately, bobby chacon's story is also as brutal and cruel as boxing... losing his senses, wife, and savings is just plain sad... r.i.p. valerie.
Damn, I'd heard about Chacon's condition, but WOW! Of course, I shouldn't be to surprised. This fight happened a week before I was BORN, and I was watching him fight on TV some 10 years later.
