Mon Dieu...si elle doit paraître sur l'album, qu'ils virent l'intro style violon viva la vida. Quelle horreur. Le reste de la chanson est tellement beau que pour moi cette intro l'égratigne sévèrement!!
@1172404 The melody may sound like a Coldplay tune, but as everyone knows, Coldplay have been using the U2 playbook for some time now. Those "colours" as Bono has so often put it are distinctly U2's.
I hear what you're saying though...A little more desperation found in the first few minutes...Might be hard to replicate it at this stage of their career and prosperity but, who knows...I'm still hoping for the mystery to come back...But who's complaining right? As long as it's U2...:)
@NilDesperandum777 Really i like the old u2 i think that U2 was great in the 80 and part of the 90's but now are horribles very soft and corny with the same sound and the same repetitions of delay , shimmer etc.............and always is the same
@1172404 I hear ya, but if you look at everything put out and including, albums from Passengers to NLOTH, there's some real gems in there good enough to be on any album U2 have put out. For me, I wish the band would (Or perhaps Bono) try to be less, "hip" and "funky" and more orchestral and "mysterious" perhaps, as they once were. "Songs of Ascent" could be something pretty special..."Winter" sounds like a return to form...And well, :"Magnificent" is one of the best songs they've ever done...;)
@NilDesperandum777 i don't know magnificent sounds like All that you......... and How to dismantle............. i think that they was pretend to be more experimental maybe as zooropa but you know zooropa is an excelent album i think the last great album of u2 .
But now U2 are very commercial i think that bono should be more worry about your music that in other topics because u2 have a great talent but now Bono is more interesting in the fashion word or appear in magazine than the music.
@1172404 i think that the new albums are better then the older ones... the older are good too but i think Bono must act as he want.... i sometimes think that he is a monkey but i like him... everybody is a little weird sometimes if u think about it...
U2 was always a commercial band. Since the Joshua Tree, Bono appear in magazines. They was a bit more experimental (but still commercial) band in Zooropa and fully experimental in The Passengers: Original soundtrack 1
I like how each epoque in U2 haves diferent flavors.
@angelfischer205 well...he's a great singer...but honestly his pronounciation and articulation isn't very well...without any lyrics often you don't understand everything...
Not many bands that have been around for 30 years and still sell out stadiums beside U2 as a matter of fact there aren't any at all except U2, greatest band in the history of rock IMHO
I just hope songs of ascent hasnt got this flat uninspired sound (evident here) that has characterised a lot of U2 stuff of recent years. I want to here more "Kingdom" type stuff. This could be U2's last chance to try something interesting. NLOTH was OK but lets face it it wasnt great. The last U2 record I truly loved was Zooropa..
It wasn't great. It was brilliant. Maybe not so popular, but music shouldn't be measured by popularity,,, Unknown Caller, Moment of Surrender, NLOTH - check it live :), Magnificient, Breathe, Winter, and Cedars hit the target.
This is NOT a song from the forthcoming album Songs Of Ascent. Its a track from the No Line On the Horizon Album, its in the Bonus DVD from de Deluxe edition. 3th rtrack on the DVD, wich has a diferent track list, and features "Winter" instead of "...Crazy tonight". I really dont know why everybody says thats from the future album, when its obviusly thats not the case.
The string arrangement reminds me of viva la vida. Good song though, if this is any indication of whats gonna be on songs of ascent, It should be really great. Hopefully it's finished sometime this decade >.>
hope the new album is out this year 2010.,,im sure they would want tp play new songs on the tour,,but Edge mentioned in interview @ U2 STASTION that they keep back the album and work on it more ,,then relese it later on that means another 5 years wait,,thought they wanted to stay around for a while
@DizziNY agreeeee!! The Beatles are the best band in the world.... but in my world... U2 is the best band ever!!... we aaall have to thank The Beatles for making U2 and so many bands possssible :)
Hello all, hope your enjoying this song as much as I do! I Can't get enough of it! I'ts so moving and I'm overwhelmed with emotion.I cried the first time I heard it.(Seems to awaken my spirit)I've never felt so much love and been as inspired to do nice things for all my family and loved ones as I am now. This song is pure brilliance from the lyrics to all the instruments. U2 are the greatest band ever.Your absolutley right Nickloveandpeace, you have to hear it often to get a real feel for it :)
Why....was this not...on NLOTH? That album needed something like this. Something with a little bit more electricity. This has so much LIVE potential, moreso then White as Snow or FEZ or Cedars of Lebanon. Not that those were bad songs, I just think this one would have been a great addition!
This song is actually used in the album No Line On the Horizon Bonus DVD. Because of this, is nearly impossible that they use this on the new album... A NO LINE ON THE HORIZON TRACK
@Thanksandy well the u2 of the past is totally different from now..they were much hungrier..musically greater..lyrically...but they had their time i suppose., i lov u2...but the days when they had fire in their soul
you have a point there..it's just ashame not to hear them putting out music with some real power and excitement...songs like Magnificent and COBL were great, but I miss Larrys hard hitting drums, Edge's soundscape guitar solos etc, everything has become a bit too stripped down and bare, but at least the new album shows promise for the future...
Just because this particular song is not that great, and is different from U2 of 30 years ago, doesn't mean that songs like Breathe, Unknown Caller and I'll Go Crazy aren't great and that they "don't have it in them" anymore.
Everyone knows that Coldplay are a poor man's U2, lacking the energy, excitement, innovation, creativity, rockability, musicianship and charisma of U2.
My point is that U2 songs like Winter, Hands That Built America and several other songs from the last 2 albums before NLOTH, were starting to sound a bit too bland and boring and too close to Coldplay. I liked NLOTH because it indicates a move away from that "Coldplay sound"
I won't critizice anybody here. However I feel like people have the right to say this or that is the best for U2. They have changed over the years. The proof is that thay have a wide range of fans. Just leave them like that. In my case they have always surprised me and this song is no exception... BEAUTIFUL.
The is not a rip off of Coldplay...simply lookup U2's old song "Love Comes Tubling" the riff is from that. When Lanois and Eno showed up on the scene circa 1984.
To those who keep harking on about getting "back to the joshua tree/ achtung days" please change the tune cos its gettin a bit tired now, we all know how fantastic those albums are but were not stuck in 91 anymore, music has changed and so have u2
U2 stole from Coldplay? Coldplay owe their whole career to U2, even going as far as to copy using Brian Eno for their 4th album. Now this track is great; No Line was their best since Achtung and this continues the trend. Get that new one out sharpish - the Zooropa companion piece to No Line's Achtung.
Really? I'm a huge U2 fan and I kinda think this song sucks, at least in this format. The melody is all over the place. It has its moments, but it could be a much better song if they cut out some parts, like Bono's speak/sing in the middle. The instrumentation is decent, but doesn't always fit, either.
well I am glad u2 never got stuck at any of their albums, they like to change. Look you still got joshua tree to listen, which is great but I didn't wanted to miss this song, and many others.
The start of this song is almost the same, as Viva la Vida, because the producer have these bands the same. Nothing more, maybe thats why this song is not part of NLOTH
this discussion was also going on at another youtube movie, brian eno wrote the intro of this song, just like he did for viva la vida, so you it can be that the sound a little like each other. but you know just like me that U2 doesn't steal from other bands, they don't need that. And they don't do that.
Hearkens back to when U2 were releasing consistently brilliant albums in the 80s and hadn't yet descended into the often contrived, disingenuous releases of the mid-late 90s and 00s.
I'm not so sure about some parts of the track, but you could drop this into Unforgettable Fire or War and you wouldn't even realize it was written in 2008 had you not been told.
I love this song- but you couldn't sneak it into Fire or War because Bono gives himself away. 1st of all- the band doesn't get a chance to a musical interlude in the middle because he oohs and then talks during the entire middle section of the song. Classic post 2000 Bono. Also he its the smokers Bonos voice post Achtung Baby. :p Still a good song though
I love everything about this song...its just so full of winter life. where I live, winters are hard and cold and can be a real pain in the butt, but they almost transport you to another world, its just so beautiful.
Seems they finally got their inspiration back, first NLOTH, their best album in 12 years (after two quite mediocre: ATYCLB and HTDAAB), and now this really interesting track. Granted, it takes some listens, but it's worth the while. I like the ending better than the intro, but that's just my opinion. Great guitar again by the Edge btw...Like it!
i like it,seems to be alot going on in this tune,i can hear and feel stuff from october, war unforgettable fire, its like a b side, not a big chart tune which is good, all u2s best tunes are undercover, not hits and this sounds like one,i would like to hear more of the same from them, forget the charts.
was drinking some wine... and it turned to blood What's the use of religion... if you're any good I know i'm weedkiller honey... and you're sugar If you're the prosecution... i get away with murder If you were ice... i'm water And with your telescope... i can see further We're binary code... a one and a zero You wanted violins... and you got nero You're gravity... searching for the ground You're silence... searching for a sound Your heart is aching... your heart is my home
Just to be clear, U2 has not, at this point, been nominated for an Oscar. The nominations are not to be announced until February. The confusion may have arose from the fact taht they were nominated for three grammy awards at teh same time as the oscar buzz for the movie 'Brothers' began.
It would not be unprecedented, of course. U2 won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar for 'The hands that built America'
I'm hearing hints of guitar notes like the ones in Love Comes Tumbling. Which I love, dearly. I love U2. They make you listen and wonder where you heard that, but it's was them all along.

Coldplay can be proud that U2 stole them back! and the deserve it anyway. i recognize myself as somen who critizice now and then when i see people not being honest. But we need to respect people who gave so much good music to us. nothing more, nothing less
I completely agree. The song really sounds like a record from their early 80s stuff, especially the drum quality. The biggest difference is Bono's singing, melody, and lyrics, all of which I like :)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
winter = totally crap, its a bad bastard of viva la vida, city of blinding lights, miracle drug, yaweh & the hands that build america. poor songwriting by numbers. poor U2 its time for you to call it a day. retirement is sweet. i think there are no new ideas left. you are hasbeens! winter is a boring song stolen from themselves and from another crap combo called coldplay.
I read that eno wanted this track in NLOTH, but bono decided to remove it from the album, just because the beginning is very similar to viva la vida. I think it was silly, because this song is quite better.
by the way, is true that they are nominated for the 2010's oscars for this song?
Wowsers this is one of the most hookless, lifeless songs this 22-year U2 fan has ever heard. Please don't put it on ANY record! Mercy is so much better.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
As a long time fan, this is a poor song. Terrible lyrics and very similar to other things that they've done. Just listen to the re-issue of The Unforgettable Fire...they used to be great. The recent material has been disappointing.
if you are rlly a fan of them, you shouldn't say things like that,I think your opinium is ok but you can't say that its a poor song, its full off beauty and emotional touch,U2 has changed a lil bit but so what?still great and amazing,no words, and in my opinium its the best song from this new album!
It's nothing to do with being a fan to be honest...Just purely as a music fan, it isn't particularly good and it's derivative of other things they've done. I'm all for U2 changing...that would be good if they did. They're still stuck in the same mode since ATYCLB. Besides, I criticise because I love. I'm still hopeful about their future.
oh ok... yeah awesomenessk... LOL :) and recobalegend20... mercy will be on songs of ascent and ascent is scheduled to drop in december... hopefully. judging by all three songs i heard... sounds like its gonna be better than NLOTH.... as much as i liked NLOTH.

By the way amazing song! It makes me feel a sort like flying!

Am I the only one who hears more than a hint of Viva La Vida?
andyboothismyhero 2 years ago
this discussion was also going on at another youtube movie, brian eno wrote the intro of this song, just like he did for viva la vida, so you it can be that the sound a little like each other. but you know just like me that U2 doesn't steal from other bands, they don't need that. And they don't do that.
lucajax 2 years ago
better than any track on NLOTH or HTDAAB
Hearkens back to when U2 were releasing consistently brilliant albums in the 80s and hadn't yet descended into the often contrived, disingenuous releases of the mid-late 90s and 00s.

I'm not so sure about some parts of the track, but you could drop this into Unforgettable Fire or War and you wouldn't even realize it was written in 2008 had you not been told.
macphisto80 2 years ago
I love this song- but you couldn't sneak it into Fire or War because Bono gives himself away. 1st of all- the band doesn't get a chance to a musical interlude in the middle because he oohs and then talks during the entire middle section of the song. Classic post 2000 Bono. Also he its the smokers Bonos voice post Achtung Baby. :p Still a good song though
dookiebot 2 years ago
Good point. I suppose that's true. But the overall sound and theme would fit those albums if you omit Bono's tarnished voice and the speaking parts.
macphisto80 2 years ago
This is amazing. I love it and I love them!

I love everything about this song...its just so full of winter life. where I live, winters are hard and cold and can be a real pain in the butt, but they almost transport you to another world, its just so beautiful.
livelifeloud365 2 years ago
the chanting at the end of the track breaks my heart every time I hear it. Beautful.
subtube12 2 years ago

But we need to respect people who gave so much good music to us. nothing more, nothing less
birdonawi 2 years ago
U2 stole nothing
Brian Eno wrote the intro to Viva La Vida and he wrote the intro for this song "Winter"
So Coldplay can be proud of nothing

Any word on what's new with Songs Of Ascent? Some U2 message boards are already speculating it will never get made.
AndrewMann552 2 years ago
man, the intro and guitar in this is great. Maybe i am waiting for it but i just feel like i am listening to a track from War or October...
porscheguy1977 2 years ago 3
I completely agree. The song really sounds like a record from their early 80s stuff, especially the drum quality. The biggest difference is Bono's singing, melody, and lyrics, all of which I like :)
Kikoman97 2 years ago
This song is so beautiful! Haunting Lyric! Fabulous :-)

It would be great, if U2 win an oscar for Winter. But first, they need a nominee.......

winter = totally crap, its a bad bastard of viva la vida, city of blinding lights, miracle drug, yaweh & the hands that build america. poor songwriting by numbers. poor U2 its time for you to call it a day. retirement is sweet. i think there are no new ideas left. you are hasbeens! winter is a boring song stolen from themselves and from another crap combo called coldplay.
jackonue 2 years ago
jackonue with all due respect, what have you produced?
Your opinion is your opinion but the way you try to sound smart...hmm, have you perhaps considered retirement yourself?
Jakker27 2 years ago 3
what do you have to show that even ressembles the worst U2 song?
birdonawi 2 years ago 2
i think a lot of us are judging this song too soon.
Most U2 songs really grow after a few listens.
I listened to it a couple of times and I like it more now..

This is a beauty. and kingdom. If indeed, these appear on ascent...than wow. Just wow.

I read that eno wanted this track in NLOTH, but bono decided to remove it from the album, just because the beginning is very similar to viva la vida. I think it was silly, because this song is quite better.
by the way, is true that they are nominated for the 2010's oscars for this song?
Arghier 2 years ago 2
i too read that. oscar nomination thing.

Yeah there is a chance I think. It's in a new film called 'Brothers'

Winter is great. It shouldn't have been replaced by Crazy. Soundtrack for Linear is definitely superior to NLOTH.
dragmio 2 years ago
How do you know it's on Songs Of Ascent? It's probably not. It is on the dvd Lineair though. It didn't make NLOTH.

i think GET ON YOUR BOOTS and DISCOTEQUE is the worst song of U2, This song winter is amazing!

Wowsers this is one of the most hookless, lifeless songs this 22-year U2 fan has ever heard. Please don't put it on ANY record! Mercy is so much better.

As a long time fan, this is a poor song. Terrible lyrics and very similar to other things that they've done. Just listen to the re-issue of The Unforgettable Fire...they used to be great. The recent material has been disappointing.
macphistomo 2 years ago
if you are rlly a fan of them, you shouldn't say things like that,I think your opinium is ok but you can't say that its a poor song, its full off beauty and emotional touch,U2 has changed a lil bit but so what?still great and amazing,no words, and in my opinium its the best song from this new album!
mickeycheroso 2 years ago
It's nothing to do with being a fan to be honest...Just purely as a music fan, it isn't particularly good and it's derivative of other things they've done. I'm all for U2 changing...that would be good if they did. They're still stuck in the same mode since ATYCLB. Besides, I criticise because I love. I'm still hopeful about their future.
