You are never supposed to approach them. They get abandoned if humans go near them. People actually take them and bring them to the Coast Guard all the time thinking they are abandoned. The mother hunts with the baby on shore.
True! Normally the pup stays on shore whilst the mother hunts, and the young man in this clip would have been too close if this had been the case.
This particular pup was abandoned, however, and the way you can tell is that she is very weak, very thin for a harbour seal, and on a beach with people. Seals don't haul out on beaches with people... I'm going to have a new video soon on this subject.
How could you tell she was abandoned? (No snark, I honestly want to know what made you think that--the fact that she was so small, and her mother was nowhere to be found?)
-We actually didn't know at first. She was just hanging out on the beach and her mom was nowhere to be found. We called the MMC for advice.
-Now I know her floppy skin, svelte appearance, weakness and the absence of her mom for more than a few minutes were all pretty good signs she was abandoned.
-Most people in the bay area are more familiar with sea lions which are slimmer than harbour seals, so we didn't know how skinny she really was. She should have looked like a big sausage.
What kind of an ass would film such an event instead of trying to save the poor pup while supposedly waiting for the MMC. Typical lib stink think, wait for someone else to do the real work while complaining and not doing a damned thing yourself.
What should I have done, Scarlett, given her mouth-to-mouth? ...maybe gone into the ocean and caught a fish with my teeth ...maybe chew it up and regurgitate it for her? Maybe I should have breast-fed her a bit if she was still hungry?
You're right, it was a huge mistake calling the professionals at the Marine Mammal Center. I should have just raised her myself. That's what a real American would have done, right Scarlett? You delusional Orly Taitz loving Vegas skank...
The one thing I said that I had no way of verifying, and you picked up on it! You are an excellent troll. I'm sorry I called you a skank. I don't know if you have sex with men for money. You are definitely a whore for corporations, though.
At this age, harbour seals don't eat solid food. If I were to have given her a fish, she wouldn't have eaten it anyhow.
... so what was my personal adult responsibility to this animal? What would ScarlettKnights have done?
-The people at the Marine Mammal Center recommend not pouring water on abandoned seal pups, not giving them water to drink neither food to eat. They actually recommend not approaching them at all, in case the mother comes back to get them... but YOU must be right, and THEY must be wrong.
-I wish I had your expert opinion earlier. What's the Scarlett hotline for abandoned marine mammals? I'll help spread the word.
@CBlargh So the MMC recommends leaving the pup to die in an emergency situation just in case the mother who abandoned her might have a change of heart......... are you joking? I did not hold out as an expert, just a human being with a heart and common sense. INSTEAD OF FILMING THE TRAGIC CONDITION OF THIS HELPLESS PUP I WOULD HAVE SPEND THAT TIME TRYING TO HELP HER. BEING A SMARTASS DOESN'T HELP YOUR ARGUMENT.
-It wasn't actually an emergency, Scarlett. As it says, she lived for a month at the center before she died. Once they are this skinny, they tend to give up hope. It's hard to get them to eat, though I'm sure the center tried their best.
-The runoff from the central valley farms causes a toxic algae bloom which makes them sick every spring. If you really wanted to help them, you would stop focusing on birth certificates and start focusing on sustainable agriculture...
-Right... except, like I just said, it wasn't an emergency, and you aren't supposed to go near them. If they get habituated to humans, they will die anyhow, because they'll never learn to go out and hunt on their own.
-It's actually interesting how they try to limit contact at the MMC. They have very special ways of teaching the pups to fish.
-I filmed it, you watched it, and now you know her death was caused by agricultural runoff. It might help another pup in the future.
@CBlargh I believe it would be difficult to watch w/o trying to help the creature but at the least you called for someone else to help her. As our country becomes more overpopulated there will be less and less room for wildlife which can be seen in any part of the country. Fair immigration laws, less taxation and better education about the actual environment as opposed to fake environmentalists selling carbon offsets while continuing to do great harm is the real answer.
@ScarlettKnights your not supposed to touch them. Seals can live without food for days at a time. The right thing to do was to contact the marine centre.
I agree! It is very sad the little thing had to die, but overproduction of young is the way nature works. It's hard to tell what she was feeling, but she seemed kindof peaceful laying there. Maybe starvation is better than being eaten by a shark? I dunno...

@CBlargh
No, I'm not a "Skank" could you be talking about yourself?
I'll be willing to bet that a fisherman would have been
glad to provide you with food for the poor pup.
Again, the argument comes down to personal responsibility
v. the mind stink of expecting the state and/or others such as the
MMC taking care of adult responsibilities.

@CBlargh
Firstly, I'm no troll as I don't feel the need to follow and
clone the channels of people I disagree like your buddy
Sloppygoopmakeup, Republicanwitches, TammyFayeSyndrome, etc.
Secondly, I am married and do not and have not ever had sex for profit nor
am I a puppet for corp's. Look to the Obamanation and its bailouts and union humping.
I'd have at least tried to keep the seal hydrated and to obtain small fish to cut
up and feed to her while waiting for MMC.

@CBlargh
The lack of a legitimate birth certificate v. a certificate of live
birth is not a cause and effect situation that has anything whatsoever
to do with this poor pup. However, were our country not overpopulated with
welfare recipients and huge taxes to care for them and their familes perhaps
the lions share of the country could focus more of their
efforts on correcting situations which harm wildlife instead of working extra
jobs to make ends meet because of huge taxation.

@CBlargh
As in any emergency health situation minutes can be critical. Instead of
filing the poor pup perhaps trying to give her woud have helped, certainly filming
the poor dying creature did nothing to help her chances of survival.

You see how weak he is at 0:50?
That's how nature works, though. He seems to be doing fine at the center. He's still listed at 7.5 kilos.

very kawaii! and YES! great PSA.
One should not usually get that close to a harbour seal pup... but in this case, it is great news that you contacted the Marine Mammal people!!
