@ballygeale1 I've never read or heard that...why would you have to let it stand? I can see letting it stand before filtering it to let the sediment settle to the bottom, but that is just for lengthening the filter life. I've never heard of letting it settle AFTER filteration?
Do they make a hard case for this filter? I own it, and I went to purchase the maintenance kit for it, and I was surprised that the maintence kit comes in a blow molded hard case, but the actually filter which you want to protect in your pack...comes in a sock-like case.
@amusingisthedawn I haven't seen one. I was going to purchase the maintenance kit as well but they took it down from Amazon and I haven't looked for it since. I'm sure I can still find it. But I think a hard case for the pump would be nice, although I probably wouldn't use it except in some cases for storage. In my pack it already takes up a lot of high value real estate so I wrap it in a shirt and try to pack it in the middle of some softer items. Thanks.
@handyscot1 Thanks, and congrats. Mine takes up a lot of space in my pack but it's a nice addition. I'd gladly give up the space of a water bottle to save weight and get the ability to get many bottes of clean water! Take care and Merry Christmas.
Thanks for posting. I got one Saturday and tested it out yesterday. My buddy has a filter with a bicycle pump action. We went on a backpack trip last winter and man, with cold hands we had to switch off often to water our hikers. This should be much easier. I will be using the coffee filter trick, good idea.
@MegaStrobelight Thank you. I haven't really had a chance to use mine again since I made this video. I keep hoping to go on a backpacking trip but haven't had time. I hope to get some good use of this though in the next six months or so. I hope yours works well and lasts a long time.
One note though is that this does take up a decent amount of room in my backpack. I bought a smaller backpack recently and I'll have to really think of how this needs to stow.
Great advice about the coffee filter too by the way. I've heard that these are the filters the military gives to special forces people who will be behind enemy lines for a while.
I think this was a GREAT review, very informative. Thank you! Glad you left the daughter in. My son is now almost 18 and when he was little like that hearing him talk was like music to me. I miss it.
I much appreciate this video man! I've recently returned my Katadyn Hiker as I was terribly let down whilst out in backcountry. It broke on it's second usage first day. I didn't pick this one to begin with for it's handle, have you found that the handle is at risk of breakage if perhaps squeezed a little in any direction (accidentily by other gear in a backpack)?
@Varghjarta I can't say that it will NOT break, but it seems pretty sturdy. The hinge looks to be a weak point but only with sideways torque on the handle. They did a good job making it so the end of the handle touches the base of the filter housing when it's down, so any pressure pushed straight in should be fine. I pressed against mine pretty hard and it was very solid. I torqued it sideways and there is some play there so it could break but shouldn't in any normal scenario. Thank you!
i got 1 of those pumps and u have 2 leave the water stand 4 at least 2 mins b 4 u drink it

@SmokeRingsPipeDreams Thanks! I appreciate the encouragement and I totally agree. A child's voice is one of the greatest sounds a parent can hear.
That is interesting that SF may use these filters some. I can see why, they are very handy. I had not heard that.
Thanks again.

Anyone who watches, please excuse the section in the middle with my daughter talking to me! I couldn't cut that part out!
