Even if i never met him and i never heard him live because of my age i just respect corelli with all of my soul he takes it each time i hear him sing , his emotions, his tecnique, his powerfull and his singing like it was his second nature make me love him as the best tenor of all times
Corelli is reaching deep down from the depths of his soul and letting it all come out. The others are just trying to get the notes right. That is what it sounds like to me. Corelli is the best at this.
I could listen to Bjorling all day long but live in this aria Corelli's voice was a natural for it. Jussi recorded it very well however, great technique.
Even though we clearly point Domingos´s vocal weakness in his top notes which in many instances are close-to-collapse or crack his followers keep in playing deaf.. That´s why now he sings one half or a whole step down.. His worldwide promotion machinery never rest to convince us that he is the God of tenors ( Liberame Domine !!) Has he good musical, histrionics points ? Certainly, no question on that..but please, don´t force us to swallow that he is the best in the world...PLEASE.
@GEIOMED All are good or very good tenors, but ever one have present Pavarotti's playing this aria, ans sincerelly,I believe than, specifically in Puccini, and much more in Turandot,he follow been the best.
Domingo sings it very well. It is well structured, hearty and clean. Yes he does'n nail on B, but for me the matter is not how long the particular sound is. And I don't understand, whats wrong with his high B. It is not bad at all.
Well, but Corelli's one is better. Corelli is amazing in this role. I don't very much like him, but here he's insuperable.
Definitely not Bjorling's premier Nessun Dorma, the live recording in Stockholm (I believe) where he slows it down is the best performance of this song ever.
Corelli is unbelievable, too, one of my favourite voices, definitely unbelievably powerful.
Why is it that we enjoy so much destroying people and not use a dignified and respectul comment on somebody who is way up there. We have to show so much knowledge without really knowing what we are saying. Has anyone actually been in front of a public to offer the best og bests? well they all have. Jussi was great, Corelli was great, Domingo is still great, etc., etc. Let us give them a chance. Let us be grateful that we have heard them in person.or under excellent recording conditions.
2.Bjorling never sang the part on stage but made a great recording -59 with Birgit Nilsson
3. Domingo I know at least ten recordings that are better than domingo´s not to mention the live performances but if you accept his high notes then wash your ears with something!
For those who love beautiful singing Jussi B is #1. The other two were exciting singers and had successful careers despite vocal problems/artistic shortcomings.
Admiraba la voz de J.Bjorlingpero aquí se escucha como apretada, P. Domingo trata de interpretar bién, su voz no es bella, al final toma bién la nota alta,, como en casi todo, es madiocre. El Gran Maestro Franco Corelli, en la historia de la opera "Turandot" esta con siderado, por los VERDADEROS ENTENDIDOS DE OPERA Y SU HISTORIAL, COMO EL MEJOR "CALAF" ;
Gracias macciboma..pieri..
Those comment favorably on Domingo's miserable rendition of Nessun Dorma must be out of your mind. The final cadence is piss poor. Both the B4 and A4 are pinched. He thins out as he pushes and have no breath control so that the notes are held properly. The truest rendition is by Corelli -he owned the role of Calaf. Maestro Bjorling gives and excellent lyric rendition of the aria. His technique is impeccable -something the hooted and pushed sounding hispanic should have learned!
Very hard to compare. Different voices, specially Bjorling. My favorite is Doming for the darkness of his voice, those lows. But I would never say he's "better" or "the best", I simply prefer him in this aria.
Domingo is actually singing this very good, better than Bjoerling in fact, although it's a bit unfair as it's stereo of the highest class, as for Bjoerling the recording was primitive. And the last high note Domingo gets out is not pretty. As for Corelli, only one word: grotesque.
@macciboma No that is Potts, and then Lanza/Bocelli. Much more than Caruso. So what that proves I don't know.Corelli had a fantastic voice, but his lisping is awful, and he didn't sing very well as his mannerisms was more important to him. He could have been one of the greaestt, but he chose to be difficult. Or why do you think that when real musical critics are voting in polls, Kraus, Bjoerling, Domingo, Di Stefano etc are always much better placed.
I totaly agree with you, it just sounds ridiculous, like an idiot not being able to control his tongue...voice, voice, voice, ego, ego, ego - but where's style, musicianship...? It certainly is a voice that can thrill for while, but it quickly becomes boring for the above mentioned lackings....
Corelli was the best Calaf ever. Just because he had a lisp doesn't make his technique inferior... actually I find him much more skilled than Bjorling
Just because! The lisp is the worst on any singer ever. As for Bjoerling he won Classic CDs big singer competetion 1999 among the critics. Corelli wasn't among the 100 best among the critics!
You may think what you want. It's never Corelli that all the singers are studying, it's Bjoerling. It's true that his voice shrank much in the fifties when he made most of his recordings, but in the 30s he had a voice with laserpoint, but you wouldn't know what that is.
dOMINGO SANG VERY WELL IT WAS NOT THE PROBLEM IT WAS HIS TOP WAS TIGHT AND SOMETIMES REALLY NOT SO GOOD BUT HE SANG USUALLY VERY WITH IN THE MUSIC AND MANY ROLES BUT HERE CORELLI IS THE BEST FOR THE ROLE AND THE VOICE HAD HEFT OVER THE OTHERS. I DID LIKE DEL MONACO IN HIS PRIME THOUGH, HEARD HIM IN OTELLO, BIG EXCITING VOICE A TRUE DRAMATIC TENOR!
I like Björling best, but also like the Up-Glissandos of Domingo. He definitely knows how to sing it too, also Corelli, but IMO he sounds somewhat hard and loud, not so balanced as Björling.
Seems except for that tight top (not necessarily here) Domingo sang well technically. I think learning all those roles must take a lot of work. I remember some good singing in the late 70's a Luisa Miller I heard him do yet he was never a favorite of mine. The voice for me did not stand out as one of the greatest but we had many come and go that where really bad here. Again Corelli in this role anyhow is the best. Bjorling and DOMINGO did not have that much heft LIVE the way he had for it.
Yes Bjorling as much as I love the voice at times seemed to have excessive vibrato, true and it was almost always when he was going forte. His later recordings had more of it then early yet he died at 49 so how he would have sounded at 60 nobody knows.
Live of course Corelli was best of the three in this role, Bjorling never sang it live he was smart with his lyric voice not too but on recording I love it best , live Corelli was it he sang the very best Calaf it fit his voice like a glove and many agree. I'm not a Corelli fan but in this role he and del monaco are tops on my list.
Domingo's rendition is shameful. I have seen amateur tenors sing the the B4-A4 in the climx much better. He cannot hold the B4 for heaven's sake! Never mind that the B4-A4 sounds flat and weak. Corelli's rendition is masterful and a true spinto performance. Bjorling delivers a wonderful rendition with a lyric flair. It's an insult to Corelli& Bjorling to have Domingo compared to then. The former two are way ahead of him in terms of vocal artistry.

Domingo sings "Sulla tua bocca, Lo diro" in 2 breadths. It should be sung in a single breadth. It's more elegant that way. He cannot hold the B4 long enough either. His final cadence is pedestrian but that is expected. It's Domingo.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Domingo has colour? You need a new pair of ears! What a ridiculous comment. Not having Pavarotti here as an example of a lyric voice singing this spinto aria is mistake. His renditions were glorious in a lyric way. Domingo never had the vocal range to do justice for this aria! And is asmuchas I like Bjorling, Fabrizzio makes a good point which should not be overlooked.
Bjorling as far as technical matters is concerned, is the best. But he lacks the raw passion of Corelli. Domingo has too weak of a top register to be a convincing Calaf. In my opinion, Franco Corelli still gives the definitive rendition of 'nessun dorma', large, powerful voice, genuine raw passion, and explosive upper register notes.
I does not seem that either of the three were particularly confortable with the aria at the time of their recording. Placido is more even in his tone than either Fanco or Jussi.
Jussy pushes, he always did, but in his later years, he did so the more, but comes out very lyrical. Corelli seems tired here. If one is a tenor singing Nessun Dorma, Corelli's technical approach, open tone, disengaged vibrato is best in the sense of comfort and control. In top shape, he would have ripped the house.
Jussi was a constant pusher? You can't be serious. If he was always pushing he wouldn't have the round sound he always had, neither would he have lasted.
Hey, I have enjoyed a lot of Bjoerling, but he overused his instrument, he taxed it a lot. His technique was not 100% secure. It was light, a little covered, and then he would bring on full power, but he molded the sound with some pressure in the throat. He also was uneasy, his vibrato flobbby in mezzo sustained lower and middle tones. He also, used diapraghm, but not directed from the pelvic muscles beneath, THOSE give the security. If you sing like this, with HIS intensity, it'll cost you.
Do me a favor, don't e-mail me with your "reply" if you can call it so, save your words your "utterly stupid and superficial" words for you and your family, leave me out of your personal frustration. Thanks
In fact you are right. My answer was driven by exasperation hence worthless so I apologize.
You see, I, as a singer, studied the singing of Björling for a long while, knowing the majority of his live and all studio recordings and moreover the technical view of his teachers. Surely some vocal pedagogues would agree, that Björling overexerted his voice from 1953 to late 1958. However that results from a laryngitis not his technical inability.
Conciliatory greetings of a fervent Björling admirer!
Listen to the breathing, pronunciation and delivery of Jussi Björling in "No, no, sulla tua bocca lo diro" and "Dilegua, o notte! Tramontate, stelle! All'alba vincero'!". Listen to the delicate way he treats the subject matter "bacio scioglierà il silenzio" (and my kiss shall break) convincingly. This is the superior performance.
Even if i never met him and i never heard him live because of my age i just respect corelli with all of my soul he takes it each time i hear him sing , his emotions, his tecnique, his powerfull and his singing like it was his second nature make me love him as the best tenor of all times

Bb it's over.

Bjorling und Corelli, dignos tenores. Domingo fue muy malo.

What and utterly stupid demonstration of superficial knowledge.

Conciliatory greetings of a fervent Björling admirer!

meritano tutti ammirazione.
Saluto Walter.

Grazie

How good is to make such copmarisons! I know that Domingo is the best - and now I can hear it, comparing to these two great tenors of the past.

a tanti sentire nello stesso video, diversi

Two of my favorite tenors :) Grazie for sharing with us ur wonderful music. Grazie.

Grazie Walter.
