2004 is early for an indie game?

The first Touhou game is from 1996 and ZUN has been doing them solo since 2002's Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (Touhou 6).

2011 saw the release of Ten Desires, the thirteenth Touhou game if you exclude three additional side-story Touhou games by ZUN and three official spin-off fighters by an unrelated independent group.

You better check it out.

There were "indie" games well before Cave Story. Many successful games all throughout the history of video games have sprung to life the same way Cave Story did like, for example, Out of this World. It didn't all start with Cave Story.

@thejobloshow This is something I should have gone a bit more into detail about (because this video is long enough right?) I do explain that there were a lot of other games and developers before and around that time; and back in the 90's I believe Lost Vikings and Lord of the Rings had a similar story of having 2 or so developers. But CS is a bit different because it distributed it's game alone without getting it officially published by Nintendo. CS certainly isn't the first.

I want to get the original soundtrack in an MP3 format, unfortunatly, the only way is to get it off of the tribute site in a .ORG format, is there a converter that can corvert the .ORG to MP3, or is there somewhere else I can get the original music and maybe the new music as well?

there are programs that can open ogg and save them as .mp3, e.g. Sony Vegas or Adobe Audition.

but Cave Story's OST is uploaded by various youtubers here, you could download these with "Free YouTube to MP3 Converter".

Excellent review! That went by really quickly, ha. Cave Story is one of my all time favourite games (indie or otherwise), and you did a great job articulating why it succeeds. Kudos!

Have to admit though that I am now committed to buying every version of the game that comes out :P Although as much as I love how Nicalis have brought it to new audiences, I do prefer the Aeon Genesis translation over theirs. I felt it had more personality and was better written.

It's "Shoddy" not "shotty". So it would be "Excuse the shoddy audio". Or you could say "spotty" if it cut out in parts.

"shotty" is slang for shotguns. Stupid slang, to be sure, but that's how it's used.

Anyways.

This was a nice tribute! Cave Story was the game that got me interested in Indie games several years ago, and it's still easily in my top 3 favorite indie games after having played lots of others.

@MyHumanLife Also, I actually preferred using just a Wiimote (not with the protection on though, because that makes holding the wiimote awkward). It makes it feel like you're playing an NES game, it fits the game perfectly. At least in my opinion =P
