  • To add, that if something, was a professional startup of thiskind!

  • Extra details? AFAIK that is all there is to it.

Of course checking the oil and water beforehand is a given.

I have seen dozers with BOTH pony motor AND electric start, the electric added later, it is on the other side, usually where the pony motor quit and someone later fixed the pony.

  • I love these machines more than my wife! Don´t tell her :D

  • what year model?

  • @ibycubysd They tell me its 1966\67 its a 47a 4866

  • Aaahhhh the good old days! great memories

  • That sound brings back memories of my choker setting days...

  • They were an awsome system for prolonging the life of an engine. Pitty this video doesn't quite show the correct method of starting with the extra details.

  • What year is that e I have one a 68, high horse. power shift.

  • easy to fix a pony motor, easy on the diesel too, glow plugs are a bitch, and I'd rather have a 40 year old cat than a new brand x. sweet old kitty cat.

  • U.S.? Yea, California...

  • Too bad the machines don't have pony engines today. Imagine a D11 built with today technology from 1960?

  • What are the advantages of having a pony engine on a dozer or any other machine? Somebody told me the engine doesn't need a battery they work by magnito. Aren't they more work to maintain? Don't some of them start by handcrank?

  • Batteries, starters and glowplugs were not technologically up to the task of starting a big diesel back when this tractor was made.

  • Several advantages. The pup motor shares the coolant with the big motor so you warm up the main somewhat making the oil work better. You can spin the big motor for a while without it firing so that you get the lubrication system fully working before it has to bear the stresses of operation and there is no battery to worry about depleting and no starter motor that's going to burn out if cranked too long.

The pony can have a crank or its own electric starter,

  • Sounds like my lawnmower

  • same

    sounds tiny.

  • what are the knobs u pull when u start the pony engine before u engaage the flywheel?

  • First 1 is fuel on. Next is choke. Then throttle.

  • I have a D7E also, the pony has so nice sound :) at least compared to my D8 14a, it sounds like a 1940 airplane :D

  • i love this lol

  • what are you doing when you pull the handle out then do noting for a little bit and then pull out the other one to start it up

  • Ok have to wait for main engine oil pressure.

You can see the gauge rise its the top right one.

  • what was that bang when it started up

  • not shure, but I've seen a few start ups like this and It all sounds normal to me. Just how thoes engins sound.

  • The bang is the starter pinion throwing out of gear when the main starts. Its normal.

  • nice pony engine, lol.
