The tuning is a half step down. Alot of musicians who have higher voices(like me and like Phil) like to tune a half step down so it gives more body to guitar while staying in a comfortable range. It's everything tuned flat. So Eb Ab C#(Db) F#(Gb) Bb Eb
For some reason, you remind me of Jared Leto, Phil. LOL I hope that doesn't offend you! I don't know why it would; just thought I would put that disclaimer in there! LOL!
I seriously think you are quickly becoming my favorite worship leader/sing/song writer ever. This is incredible. Thank you thank you for being an instrument of God. Yay Phil! Keep up the Christ-centeredness.
@bugbayou I've not been playing for long so I may not be the best person to give advice on this but, you kind of don't press the strings down so it almost mutes them. I'm sure someone will be along soon enough to give you a better description of how it's done.
Could you still play this song with the exact same chord progression, but in standard tuning? Or would it sound too weird/bad? Or what would you guys recommend doing?
@Dunnization So, Phil's guitar is in "standard" tuning, he has just tuned each string a half step lower than what most people tune to. What this means for you is that you can play the chords he describes the way he describes them on your standard tuned guitar and it will work. What won't work, is trying to play along with him, because your chords will be half a step higher than his.
If you want to play with him you'll have to tune your guitar down a half-step. This can be done with most tuners. You are usually going for E A D G B E. To match Phil, tune to Eflat Aflat Dflat Gflat Bflat Eflat. Your tuner probably has a way to let you do this. Lots of people do this so that they don't have to sing quite as high. Others do it because they say it gives their guitar a more resonate sound.
you should teach everyone the way you play it acoustic live in dadgad(half step as well) because it sounds awesome and you can tell he plays it in dadgad if you watch closely and know how to play in dadgad or somewhat play in dadgad
Man all the songs ive been wanted to write my own. have always been so hard to sing. but now that you have tought me half step down it gives it all just that little bit more for me to be able to give the illusion that i can sing higher :P
i think im going to your blog...lol and i need to do that tuning for my guitar. dude by the way, your version of hallelujah saved my voice lol the original i learned and started singing and it was good but your version has actually stretched my voice to reach alot further which is what i was looking for with the original hallelujah...thanks :D
DUDE seriously all bands should do this!!! how do you play it like you do in your video in the video where yoiu are live in the studio...i love that version just the way you are playing it so you should show us that way too!
Even just singing and teaching this song, it's so clear his passion for Christ and his desire to share how much he loves our Savior. Thanks for your ministry Phil. Hope you're in Michigan soon.
