Chris, just tell them to quiet down. You're just being honest and it doesn't hurt to tell the truth. Don't speculate and condescend and say ...you're just doing this to feel important, or go back to Kindergarten...but do just say "Look, we're trying to have a conversation here and I don't mean to be rude, but I would really like to have the conversation that I'm having...and I can't if you continue having yours at the present decibel level you're implementing." Embarrassment makes it work
I'm generally a nice person and normally don't get all heated about things like that, but that night was especially bad. Even after repeated attempts to get them to lower their voice, they still kept at it. Oh well. Thats what I get for going to IHOP at 2 am heh
Try this next time: Just drop the pants, keep the undies on of course...it's a public place, and start dancing in front of them like the guys in "I'm too sexy for my shirt"..right said fred, though he thought wrong. You got his look going too, which is a plus. It's a win win situation, though not a winwin situation involving belching..since you either get them to run away screaming...OR, you get a few dollar bills stuck in your undies. They end up paying for dinner and you get some exercise.
I think a patented winwin belch woulda shut 'em up.
One of my old tricks when dealing with people like that is I rudely join in on their conversation(you know, returning the favor) and hijack it and change it to something that's very hard to get emotional about,"So recently I picked up knitting...". Or I get management to kick 'em out.
Chris I understand how annoying it can be to encounter these obnoxious People in Restaurants. I think they are wanting the Attention from everybody in Order to feel important.
